Body mass index (BMI) is widely used to define obesity. In studies of pancreatic beta-cell/islet mass, BMI is also a common standard for matching control subjects in comparative studies along with age and sex, based on the existing dogma of their significant positive correlation reported in the literature. We aimed to test the feasibility of BMI and BSA to assess obesity and predict beta-cell/islet mass. We used National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data that provided dual-energy Xray absorptiometry (DXA)-measured fat mass (percent body fat; %BF), BMI, and BSA for adult subjects (20-75y; 4,879 males and 4,953 females)...

Omphalopagus twins are joined ventrally in the umbilical region. In omphalopagus twins, liver's fusion is very frequent, being present in about 80% of cases. Two conjoined twins born in our Hospital were evaluated using plain x-rays, ultrasound (US), gastrointestinal xrays, Tc-99 hepatobiliary scintigraphy (SC) and contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT). There was no bony connection on conventional xrays, neither bowel communication on GI x-rays study. US demonstrated the fusion of left hepatic lobes and a not-quantifiable vascular shunt...

BACKGROUND: Network medicine aims to map molecular perturbations of any given diseases onto complex networks with functional interdependencies that underlie a pathological phenotype. Furthermore, investigating the time dimension of disease progression from a network perspective is key to gaining key insights to the disease process and to identify diagnostic or therapeutic targets. Existing platforms are ineffective to modularize the large complex systems into subgroups and consolidate heterogeneous data to web-based interactive animation...

Infectious Spondylodiscitis is a rare infection in children. It is more frequent in patients under 6 years of age. We report the case of an 8-year-old patient with lumbar pain for 2 months, without fever. Xrays, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging all three showed spondylodiscitis L4-L5. After a 10-day antibiotic treatment with clindamycin with regular response, a bone puncture was performed isolating Kingella kingae (Kk). Ostearticular infections caused by Kk have increased among infants and children...

X-ray K-Edge Subtraction Computed Tomography (KES-CT) is based on the acquisition of two images at different energies, one below and one above the Kedge of a contrast agent. KES-CT is mainly performed at synchrotron facilities where a tunable monochromatic X-ray beam is available. Thanks to innovative Photon Counting Xray Detectors (PCXDs), it would be desirable to collect the two images in a single shot with a conventional polychromatic Xray spectrum. This approach, sometimes called spectral-CT or color-CT eliminates the risk of misregistration due to motion between consecutive acquisitions and it should allow for scans with much lower doses of contrast medium...

Asphyxiating thoracic dystrophy (ATD also known as Jeune syndrome) is a very rare disorder with an incidence in the United States of 1 case per 100,000-130,000 live births. Chronic alveolar hypoventilation leading to concurrent hypoxia is the main cause of morbidity and mortality in these patients due to its complications. A 22-year-old male with past medical history of ATD and severe kyphoscoliosis presented with progressively worsening shortness of breath for several days. Past surgical history was significant for multiple reconstructive sternal surgeries, his first surgery was at the age of two...

4-Hydroxypleurogrisein, a congener of the anticancer-lead compound pleurotin, as well as six further derivatives were isolated from the basidiomycete Hohenbuehelia grisea , strain MFLUCC 12-0451. The structures were elucidated utilizing high resolution electron spray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESIMS) and 1D and 2D nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectral data and evaluated for their biological activities; for leucopleurotin, we provide Xray data. While most congeners showed moderate antimicrobial and cytotoxic activity, 4-hydroxypleurogrisein emerged as an inhibitor of hepatitis C virus infectivity in mammalian liver cells...

Study Design: Retrospective study. Purpose: Lumbar intervertebral disc degeneration is an important cause of low back pain. Overview of Literature: Spinal fusion is often reported to have a good course for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). However, many studies have reported that adjacent segment degeneration is accelerated after lumbar spinal fusion. Radiography is a simple method used to evaluate the orientation of the vertebral column...

Ion hydration is of pivotal importance for fundamental processes such as ion pumping in membranes as well as charge transport in batteries. Thermodynamic models describing ion hydration serve as input for applications in process technology and engineering. Spectroscopic tools ranging from Xray to Second Harmonic Generation as well as 2D non-linear techniques in the IR are used to probe the retardation in the hydration bond dynamics in the vicinity of anions and cations. However, seemingly simple questions like the size of the hydration shell or the occurrence of ion pair formation are still subject of controversial discussion...

Corrosion experiments with non-irradiated U₃Si₂-Al research reactor fuel samples were carried out in synthetic MgCl₂-rich brine to identify and quantify the secondary phases because depending on their composition and on their amount, such compounds can act as a sink for the radionuclide release in final repositories. Within the experimental period of 100 days at 90 °C and anoxic conditions the U₃Si₂-Al fuel sample was completely disintegrated. The obtained solids were subdivided into different grain size fractions and non-ambient X-ray diffraction (XRD) was applied for their qualitative and quantitative phase analysis...

Environmental concern associated with the side effects of high fluoride content in ground water and surface water has prompted the researchers to look for an efficient, convenient and easy method. Considering the potential of a good adsorbent, present study reports the synthesis of a composite by impregnating zirconium on powdered activated carbon (AC) using ultrasound as the tool for synthesis and applying it for fluoride adsorption from water. The nature of the composite was determined through characterization by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive Xray (EDX), Xray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption analysis (BET) and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis...

Dipole-dipole cross-correlated relaxation (CCR) between two spin pairs is rich with macromolecular structural and dynamic information on inter-nuclear bond vectors. Measurement of short range dipolar CCR rates has been demonstrated for a variety of inter-nuclear vector spin pairs in proteins and nucleic acids, where the multiple quantum coherence necessary for observing the CCR rate is created by through-bond scalar coupling. In principle, CCR rates can be measured for any pair of inter-nuclear vectors where coherence can be generated between one spin of each spin pair, regardless of both the distance between the two spin pairs and the distance of the two spins forming the multiple quantum coherence...

INTRODUCTION: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is an X-linked genetic disorder that causes progressive skeletal and cardiac muscle weakness in boys. Cardiac dysfunction is a frequent cause of death in DMD. Glucocorticoids are the standard of care in DMD. The long-term use of oral glucocorticoids in DMD is complicated by poor bone health. Epidemiological studies suggest a biological link between the loss of bone mineral density (BMD) and cardiovascular disease, including coronary artery and cerebrovascular diseases...

OBJECTIVES: We examine the contrast agent Lipiodol effect on the relative biological effectiveness (RBE) values for flattening filter free (FFF) and flattening filter (FF) beams of 6 MV-Xray (6 MVX) and 10 MVX. METHODS: Lipiodol was placed at 5 cm depth in water. According to the microdosimetric kinetic model, the RBE values for killing the human liver hepatocellular cells were calculated from dose and lineal energy (yd(y)) from Monte Carlo simulations. RBE200kVX and RBECo were defined as the ratios of dose using reference radiation (200 kVX, Co-ɤ) to the dose of test radiation (FFF and FF beams for 6 MV and 10 MV) to produce the same biological effects...

We report a series of Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes with different ligands containing a dipicolyl unit functionalized with urea groups that may contain or not a phenylboronic acid function. These complexes were designed for the recognition of phosphorylated anions through coordination to the metal ion reinforced by hydrogen bonds involving the anion and NH groups of urea. The complexes were isolated and several adducts with pyrophosphate were characterized using Xray diffraction measurements. Coordination of one of the urea nitrogen atoms to the metal ion promoted the hydrolysis of the ligands containing 1,3-diphenylurea units, while ligands bearing 1-ethyl-3-phenylurea groups did not hydrolyze significantly at room temperature...
