Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) is known to increase the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE), which includes deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and less frequently cerebral vein thrombosis, but the absolute risk for a given patient is very low. After starting MHT, the risk of VTE seems to be at its highest, declining to the non-HRT user baseline level of risk after stopping. Whether estrogen-only or estrogen-progestin HRT combination is linked to a similar risk of VTE is unclear from the available evidence...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Cerebral sinus venous thrombosis (CSVT) is a rare but life-threatening disease and its diagnosis remains challenging. Blood biomarkers, including D-Dimer are currently not recommended in guidelines. Soluble endothelial receptor proteins (sICAM-1, sPECAM-1 and sVCAM-1) have been shown to be promising diagnostic biomarkers in deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). Therefore, we examined endothelial receptor proteins as potential biomarkers for detecting CSVT...

INTRODUCTION: Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is a rare and life-threatening condition that may be encountered during pregnancy and puerperium. The diagnosis of CVST is a challenge because of its varied presentation. CASE REPORT: A 28-year-old woman presented with headache, projectile vomiting, and generalized tonic-clonic seizures 10 days after delivery by cesarean section. She had an uneventful antenatal period of 38 weeks of gestation. High clinical suspicion and the availability of magnetic resonance venography helped in making a diagnosis of CVST...

Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) following pulmonary lobectomy, which is traditionally attributed to air embolism and atrial fibrillation (AF), may occur after thrombus formation in the pulmonary vein stump (PVS). Herein, we document the mechanical thrombectomy (MT) of a carotid bifurcation occlusion post-left upper lobectomy (LUL) to manage AIS. A 76-year-old male with a history of diabetes, dyslipidemia, and a treated dural arteriovenous fistula at the transverse sigmoid junction, with no history of AF, successfully underwent LUL for a pulmonary tumor...

During spaceflight, fluids shift headward, causing internal jugular vein (IJV) distension and altered hemodynamics, including stasis and retrograde flow, that may increase the risk of thrombosis. This study's purpose was to determine the effects of acute exposure to weightlessness (0-G) on IJV dimensions and flow dynamics. We used two-dimensional (2-D) ultrasound to measure IJV cross-sectional area (CSA) and Doppler ultrasound to characterize venous blood flow patterns in the right and left IJV in 13 healthy participants (6 females) while 1 ) seated and supine on the ground, 2 ) supine during 0-G parabolic flight, and 3 ) supine during level flight (at 1-G)...

Cerebral vein and dural venous sinus thromboses (CVST) account for 0.5%-1% of all strokes. Some structural factors associated with a potentially higher risk for developing CVST have been described. However, angulation of the dural venous sinuses (DVS) has yet to be studied as a structural factor. The current study was performed because this variable could be related to alterations in venous flow, thus predisposing to a greater risk of CVST development. Additionally, such information could help shed light on venous sinus stenosis (VSS) at or near the transverse-sigmoid junction...

According to the literature, transverse sinus hypoplasia is not a normal variant and has a serious potential effect on cerebral blood flow. We are presenting a rare case of chronic headache due to severe hypoplasia of the left transverse and sigmoidal sinus. A 12-year-old female girl was admitted with a complaint of gradual progressive severe headache, throbbing in nature, confined to a bitemporal and frontal region in the last 4-5 months. Headache is not associated with fever, vomiting, photophobia, or vision problems...

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of intracranial dural arteriovenous fistulas (icDAVFs) is controversial. Cerebral vein thrombosis (CVT) and venous hypertension are recognized predisposing factors. This study aimed to evaluate the incidence of association between icDAVF and CVT and describe baseline aggressiveness and clinical outcomes for icDAVFs associated with CVT. The authors also performed a literature review of studies reporting icDAVF associated with CVT. METHODS: Two hundred sixty-three consecutive patients in two university hospitals with confirmed icDAVFs were included...

Stroke is an infarction of the central nervous system (brain, spinal cord, or retina) that results from a disruption in cerebral blood flow either due to ischemia or hemorrhage. Complications of acute stroke are common and include pneumonia, urinary tract infection, myocardial infarction, deep vein thrombosis, and pulmonary embolism, among several others, all of which increase the risk of poor clinical outcomes. Gastrointestinal bleeding is a well-known complication that can occur during the acute phase of stroke...

The spontaneous occlusion of brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) is a rare event, particularly for unruptured ones. Associated factors include single-venous drainage and small nidus size. Most of the previously reported cases were ruptured bAVMs. We report the case of a middle-aged male patient with an unruptured, rolandic, left-sided bAVM associated with a 30-year history of refractory epilepsy. We documented the spontaneous thrombosis of the venous drainage of the AVM without any sign of bleeding. Finally, we underline the difference between ruptured-induced occlusion and truly spontaneous thrombosis of the bAVMs...

Cerebral venous sinus thrombosis (CVST) is an uncommon venous thromboembolic event accounting for <1% of strokes resulting in brain parenchymal injuries. JAK2V617F mutation, the most frequent driving mutation of myeloproliferative neoplasms has been reported to be associated with worse clinical outcomes in patients with CVST. We investigated whether hematopoietic JAK2V617F expression predisposes to specific pathophysiological processes and/or worse prognosis after CVST. Using an in vivo mouse model of CVST, we analyzed clinical, biological and imaging outcomes in mice with hematopoietic-restricted Jak2V617F expression, compared to Jak2WT mice...
