BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) account for a large proportion of healthcare-associated infections and have a significant impact on morbidity, length of hospital stay, and mortality. Adherence to the recommended infection prevention practices can effectively reduce the incidence of CAUTIs. This study aimed to assess the characteristics of CAUTIs and the efficacy of prevention programs across hospitals of various sizes. METHODS: Intervention programs, including training, surveillance, and monitoring, were implemented...

PURPOSE: To assess management and outcomes of bladder neck stenosis (BNS) post-transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) in 12 centers. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patients who underwent transurethral BN incision for stenosis following TURP from January 2015 and January 2023 was performed. Inclusion criteria included endoscopic diagnosis of BNS associated with obstruction and/or lower urinary tract symptoms. Data are presented as median and interquartile range...

BACKGROUND: Due to previous surgical history and subsequent adhesions between pelvic organs, surgery for cervical stump cancer (CSC) is technically more challenging than surgery for cervical cancer with an intact uterus.1 We aimed to illustrate the related anatomy, surgical steps and techniques of complete laparoscopic type C2 radical surgery (CLRS) for early-stage CSC. METHODS: CLRS for six patients with CSC was performed from January 2021 to January 2022. We demonstrated the detailed skills of parametrial management during CLRS for CSC in case 5 by means of a video...

This study aimed to construct and externally validate a user-friendly nomogram-based scoring model for predicting the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) in patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS). A retrospective real-world cohort study was conducted on 1748 consecutive hospitalized patients with AIS. Out of these patients, a total of 1132 participants were ultimately included in the final analysis, with 817 used for model construction and 315 utilized for external validation. Multivariate regression analysis was applied to develop the model...

Urinary leakage is prevalent in men. To contain and manage this leakage, men are often advised about urinary devices. However, sometimes this advice does not include penile sheaths. Penile sheaths are a good way of managing urinary leakage if an individual is suitable for sheaths. This article will explore this suitability, advantages to using a sheath, reasons why sheaths may not be suitable, and will discuss optimum fitting to ensure the sheath is a secure drainage device.

When an individual has voiding difficulties, the person may require a urinary catheter. Enabling the person to choose an appropriate method of catheterisation and supporting them can have an enormous impact on the individual's health and wellbeing. Indwelling urethral catheters are suitable for some people but for others they can affect a person's lifestyle and lead to depression. Intermittent catheterisation can work well for some people. Intermittent self-catheterisation has been used to manage urinary retention for over 3500 years...

We included patients admitted to our trauma ICU from 2016 to 2020 and divided them into two groups: before (before-FD, 2016-2017) and after (after-FD, 2019-2020) implementation of the checklist...

IMPORTANCE: Approximately 15-45% of female patients develop transient postoperative urinary retention (POUR) following pelvic reconstructive surgery. Catheter options for bladder drainage include transurethral indwelling catheter (TIC), intermittent self-catheterization (ISC), and suprapubic tube (SPT). Each strategy has risks and benefits; none have been shown to be clinically superior, and to date, no comprehensive comparative economic analysis has been published. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to evaluate the cost of these different bladder catheterization strategies after transvaginal pelvic surgery...

Clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC) is considered the preferred option to an indwelling catheter for emptying the bladder in people with a range of voiding dysfunctions. CISC has a lower risk of complications and urinary tract infections. This narrative review of previous qualitative research explores the quality-of-life impacts and highlights the challenges that men face. It will provide nurses who teach CISC with some useful insights into the male experience and the issues of concordance and adherence...

Clean intermittent self-catheterisation is a common procedure undertaken by people with bladder dysfunction. However, it is not without its complications, the main one being urinary tract infection. The most common causes of urinary tract infections are poor hygiene, technique and adherence, excessive post-void residual urine and bladder trauma. A catheter with new Micro-hole Zone Technology has been developed, which can potentially improve bladder emptying and minimise these complications. A case study is used to illustrate its effects in practice...

The prospective before-after quality improvement study was to assess bundle effectiveness to reduce urinary catheter days and prevent associated complications. We showed a reduction of catheter days, incorrect urinary catheter indications, and most strikingly formally correct indications.

Colorectal surgery has progressed greatly via minimally invasive techniques, laparoscopic and robotic. With the advent of ERAS protocols, patient recovery times have greatly shortened, allowing for same day discharges (SDD). Although SDD have been explored through laparoscopic colectomy reviews, no reviews surrounding robotic ambulatory colorectal resections (RACrR) exist to date. A systematic search was carried out across three databases and internet searches. Data were selected and extracted by two independent reviewers...

The occurrence of healthcare-associated infections is a multifactorial phenomenon related to hospital space contamination by bacteria. The ESKAPE group, specifically Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae , play a relevant role in the occurrence of these infections. Therefore, comprehensive research is needed to identify characteristics that justify the prevalence of these species in the healthcare environment. In this line, the study aimed to determine the antimicrobial resistance, biofilm formation, and the potential for polymer degradation in a collection of 33  P...

Purple urine bag syndrome (PUBS) is a rare manifestation of urinary tract infection (UTI) characterized by bluish-purple discoloration of urine, typically seen in patients with long-term urinary catheters. It occurs due to the bacterial metabolism of dietary tryptophan into indole, which is converted into indoxyl sulfate in the liver and then excreted in the urine, where it reacts with catheter materials under alkaline conditions. Risk factors include chronic constipation, advanced age, female gender, dehydration, and recurrent UTIs...
