The bending stiffness modulation mechanism for soft grippers has gained considerable attention to improve grasping versatility, capacity, and stability. However, lateral stability is usually ignored or hard to achieve at the same time with good bending stiffness modulation performance. Therefore, this article presents a bioinspired bidirectional stiffening soft actuator (BISA), enabling compliant and stable performance. BISA combines the air tendon actuation (ATA) and a bone-like structure (BLS). The ATA is the main actuation of the BISA, and the bending stiffness can be modulated with a maximum stiffness of about 0...

A novel Bartonella -like symbiont (BLS) of Tyrophagus putrescentiae was characterized. BLS formed a separate cluster from the Bartonella clade together with an ant symbiont. BLS was present in mite bodies (103 16S DNA copies/mite) and feces but was absent in eggs. This indicated the presence of the BLS in mite guts. The BLS showed a reduction in genome size (1.6 Mb) and indicates gene loss compared to Bartonella apis . The BLS can be interacted with its host by using host metabolic pathways (e.g., the histidine and arginine metabolic pathways) as well as by providing its own metabolic pathways (pantothenate and lipoic acid) to the host, suggesting the existence of a mutualistic association...

INTRODUCTION: Basic life support (BLS) is an emergency skill that includes performing appropriate cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) is a leading cause of mortality worldwide and is rising in Nepal. After an OHCA event, a bystander starting CPR quickly has been shown to increase the survival rate. While the Nepali police are generally the first responders to emergencies in rural parts, they are not trained in BLS. This program assesses a pilot training of hands-only CPR and choking first aid to the Nepal Police and Nepal Army participants in rural Nepal...

Mesoscopic P-wave attenuation in layered, partially saturated thermo-poroelastic media is analyzed by combining the theories of Biot poroelasticity and Lord-Shulman thermoelasticity (BLS). The attenuation is quantified by estimating the quality factor Q. The mesoscopic attenuation effect, commonly referred to as wave-induced fluid flow (WIFF), is the process that converts fast compressional and shear waves into slow diffusive Biot waves at mesoscopic heterogeneities larger than the pore scale, but much smaller than the dominant wavelengths...

BACKGROUND: International consensus on cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and emergency cardiovascular care science and treatment recommendations (CoSTR) have reported updates on CPR maneuvers every 5 years since 2000. However, few national population-based studies have investigated the comprehensive effectiveness of those updates for out-of-hospital cardiac arrest due to shockable rhythms. The primary objective of the present study was to determine whether CPR based on CoSTR 2005 or 2010 was associated with improved outcomes in Japan, as compared with CPR based on Guidelines 2000...

BACKGROUND: Mergers of big chain retail community pharmacies can impact the competitiveness of the pharmacy workforce to negotiate better wages and work conditions. However, it is unclear whether these types of mergers are generalizable to the US pharmacy workforce. We should observe this effect when comparing annual wage trends between retail community pharmacy workers to non-retail community pharmacy workers. In the absence of this effect, annual wage trends would be similar. OBJECTIVE: To examine this theory, annual wage trends for retail pharmacy workers were compared to hospital pharmacy workers between 2012 and 2022...

BLs allergy is considered a major health issue, as BLs are the most frequently involved in drug allergic reactions. Amoxicillin (AX) is the most frequently involved drug in sensitization among all BLs. AX is commercialized alone or combined to clavulanic acid (CLA) in order to increase the antibiotic spectrum. The growing prescriptions of AX-CLA formulations contributed to increase the role of CLA as an allergy inducer. At present, little is known about the clinical characteristics of hypersensitivity reactions to clavulanate...

Calcium (Ca2+ ) is a versatile intracellular second messenger that regulates several signaling pathways involved in growth, development, stress tolerance, and immune response in plants. Autoinhibited Ca2+ -ATPases (ACAs) play an important role in the regulation of cellular Ca2+ homeostasis. Here, we systematically analyzed the putative OsACA family members in rice, and according to the phylogenetic tree of OsACAs, OsACA9 was clustered into a separated branch in which its homologous gene in Arabidopsis thaliana was reported to be involved in defense response...

A numerical study was conducted on an axial compressor, the NASA Stage 35, with three nonuniform tip clearances to understand the effect of a different shape tip clearances rotor on the compressor's performance. The results demonstrated that by modifying the traditional parallel tip clearance to sine-type tip clearance (STC), hump-type tip clearance (HTC), and concave-type tip clearance (CTC), the compressor's peak efficiency showed remarkable improvement and the SMI was significantly improved. In comparison to the design rotor, the SMI of STC, HTC, and CTC increased by 3...

BACKGROUND: Since 2021, international guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation recommend the implementation of so-called "life-saving systems". These systems include smartphone alerting systems (SAS), which enable dispatch centres to alert first responders via smartphone applications, who are in proximity of a suspected out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA). However, the effect of SAS on survival remains unknown. AIM: The aim is to assess the rate of survival to hospital discharge in adult patients with OHCA not witnessed by emergency medical services (EMS): before and after SAS implementation...

The exponential increase in population demands more food to be produced by employing modern technologies. There is a worldwide increase in the use of chemical fertilizers to rapidly enhance the crop yield. Nitrogen is a crucial plant nutrient, and nitrogenous fertilizers are the most widely used fertilizers. However, the high solubility and volatility of commonly used nitrogenous fertilizers have led to low nutrient use efficiency and alarming environmental pollution. They are lost due to the volatilization of ammonia and leaching of nitrate and release of nitrous oxide, and thus, plants only absorb approximately 20-30% of the nitrogen present in fertilizers...

BLS-type diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) denotes an uncommon, aggressive variant of DLBCL presenting initially in bone marrow, liver and spleen without lymphadenopathy or mass lesion. Patients with BLS-type DLBCL present frequently with haemophagocytic syndrome which often leads to early patient demise. Programmed death ligand 1 (PD-L1) plays a negative regulatory role on effector T cells and is an important target of immunotherapy. Numerous growth factors contribute to oocyte maturation and embryonic development in vivo; however, only a few are understood. One such factor is epigen, a new member of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) family that is secreted by the granulosa cells of immature oocytes. We hypothesized that epigen may play a role in oocyte maturation, specifically in the nuclear and cytoplasmic aspects. This study aimed to investigate the effects of epigen on porcine oocyte maturation and embryo development in vitro. In this study, three different concentrations of epigen (3, 6, and 30 ng/mL) were added to tissue culture medium-199 (TCM-199) during in vitro maturation of porcine oocytes...

Partial multilabel learning (PML) addresses the issue of noisy supervision, which contains an overcomplete set of candidate labels for each instance with only a valid subset of training data. Using label enhancement techniques, researchers have computed the probability of a label being ground truth. However, enhancing labels in the noisy label space makes it impossible for the existing partial multilabel label enhancement methods to achieve satisfactory results. Besides, few methods simultaneously involve the ambiguity problem, the feature space's redundancy, and the model's efficiency in PML...
