Subciliary incision is a common approach for facial fracture surgery; however, it has a higher incidence of lower lid ectropion, which can be particularly challenging for beginning surgeons to manage. This study reports the usage of lateral tarsoplasty combined with a full-thickness skin graft (FTSG) to correct severe ectropion following the subciliary approach for infra-orbital rim fractures. We retrospectively reviewed all facial fracture cases involving infra-orbital rim fractures through a subciliary approach treated in our department between March 2021 and May 2023...

An 8-month-old girl referred from her pediatrician with a diagnosis of neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) presented with an enlarged cloudy cornea of the left eye and a swollen left side of the face. Her left eye had intraocular pressure (IOP) of 21 mm Hg, corneal diameter of 16 mm, ectropion uvea, cup:disk ratio of 0.9, axial length of 28.06 mm, and S-shaped upper lid deformity. Uneventful combined trabeculotomy-trabeculectomy with mitomycin C was performed. On postoperative day 1, there was a new total hyphema that persisted for 2 weeks...

This case series aimed to describe a new technique for correcting contractures and deformities that reliably addresses lacrimal punctum deviation and severe cicatricial lower eyelid ectropion. This was a technical description and a retrospective interventional case series. Eyelid ectropion and lacrimal punctum deviation were treated surgically by grafting the fascia lata and suturing the tarsus-Horner muscle. In total, three patients underwent this surgery: one for burns, one for lower eyelid tumor resection, and the other for an orbital floor fracture following a motorcycle accident, all resulting in ectropion...

BACKGROUND: Tissue expansion is a powerful tool for reconstruction of pediatric soft-tissue pathologies, but complication rates for children have been reported as high as 40%. Infection and implant extrusion lead to premature removal and delays in reconstruction. Expanding the head and neck is uniquely challenging because the confluence of facial aesthetic units must be respected. These challenges have prompted the senior author's creation of an aesthetic-unit based algorithm. METHODS: A retrospective study of pediatric patients who underwent cervicofacial tissue expander placement by the senior author (R...

We report the case of a 35-year-old male patient who presented with a right zygomaticomaxillary complex fracture, which was five months old. It was associated with ectropion over the right eye. Diagnosis was made by clinical examination and confirmed by computed tomography, which included a three-dimensional reconstruction view. The patient was concerned about a projecting deformity over the right side of his face and blurring of vision. Surgical rationale of treatment was to easily access the surgical site for the correction of deformity and to achieve the desired facial contour and ectropion correction with uneventful postoperative healing...

BACKGROUND: Reconstructing full-thickness defects involving 50% to 75% of the horizontal length of the lower eyelid after medial and central full-thickness block resection can be challenging. As a disadvanatge, 1-stage reconstructions may require a free graft reconstruction of the posterior lamella. In addition, 2-stage reconstructions are associated with several complications, including erythema, and the eye must be temporarily closed after surgery. BACKGROUND: A lower eyelid defect is a loss of skin, muscle, and underlying structures that can occur due to trauma, malignant or benign tumors, burns, or other causes. The conventional surgical treatment of lower lid defects has several limitations, including visible scarring, narrowing of the eye, and ectropion. Here, we combined the use of a customized mid-face lift with a free mucochondral graft to overcome the disadvantages of existing methods. METHODS: Forty patients underwent reconstructive surgery using a customized mid-face lift with or without a free mucochondral graft for a lower lid defect between April 2013 and October 2020...

In ectropion, the eyelid margin - typically the lower eyelid - is turned outward. This condition is becoming increasingly common due to the ageing population. Ectropion is classified as either acquired or congenital, with the former being the most prevalent. Acquired ectropion is further divided into involutional, paralytic, mechanical and cicatricial subtypes. Involutional ectropion is the most common where there is no patient population bias. This clinical review provides an overview of ectropion.

Harlequin ichthyosis (HI) is a genetically inherited epidermal disorder due to the mutation of the ABCA12 gene, which is responsible for lipid transportation, and presents with large keratinised scales characterised by deep erythematous fissures, with ectropion and eclabium. A moderate number of cases and a high mortality rate have been recorded. In this case report, a pregnant lady gave birth to a 33-week-old premature foetus with characteristic symptoms of HI. After admitting him to the NICU, a multidisciplinary treatment approach was conducted with paediatric dermatologists, ophthalmologists, urologists, and dieticians...

As an effective non-thermal sterilization method, ultrasound remains at the level of passive bacterial death despite the initial understanding of its sterilization mechanism. Here, we present the perspective that bacteria can choose to actively enter an apoptosis-like death state in response to external ultrasonic stress. In this study, Vibrio parahaemolyticus exhibited apoptotic markers such as phosphatidylserine ectropion and activated caspases when subjected to ultrasound stress. Additionally, the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and enhanced calcium signaling were observed...

We describe a case of collodion baby diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound. Classic signs (ectropion, flattened nose, and eclabion) were detected on routine ultrasound at 21 weeks of gestation. At birth, the presence of collodion membrane was confirmed and subsequently, the diagnosis of an autosomal recessive congenital ichthyosis due to compound heterozygosity of the TGM1 gene was made.
