OBJECTIVES: Police officials' stressful and physically demanding activities were reported with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study explored the prevalence of CVD risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, tobacco use, alcohol consumption, and overweight among police officials in Kerala, India. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 255 police officials in selected police stations in the Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala. The World Health Organization STEPs questionnaire for non-communicable disease risk factor surveillance was used to collect information...

BACKGROUND: Disease or injury may cause a change in the biomechanical properties of the lungs, which can alter lung function. Image registration can be used to measure lung ventilation and quantify volume change, which can be a useful diagnostic aid. However, lung registration is a challenging problem because of the variation in deformation along the lungs, sliding motion of the lungs along the ribs, and change in density. PURPOSE: Landmark correspondences have been used to make deformable image registration robust to large displacements...

We demonstrate the low-temperature operation of solid-state lithium metal batteries (LMBs) through the development of a fluorinated and plastic-crystal-embedded elastomeric electrolyte (F-PCEE). The F-PCEE is formed via polymerization-induced phase separation between the polymer matrix and plastic crystal phase, offering a high mechanical strain (∼300%) and ionic conductivity (∼0.23 mS cm-1 ) at -10 °C. Notably, strong phase separation between two phases leads to the selective distribution of lithium (Li) salts within the plastic crystal phase, enabling superior elasticity and high ionic conductivity at low temperatures...

Two novel series of hydrazinyl-based benzenesulfonamides 9a-j and 10a-j were designed and synthesized using SLC-0111 as the lead molecule. The newly synthesized compounds were evaluated for their inhibitory activity against four different human carbonic anhydrase (hCA) isoforms I, II, IX, and XII. Both the series reported here were practically inactive against the off-target isozyme hCA I. Notably, derivative 10a exhibited superior potency (Ki of 10.2 nM) than acetazolamide (AAZ) against the cytosolic isoform hCA II...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Pathogenic variants in NOTCH3 are the main cause of hereditary cerebral small vessel disease (SVD). SVD-associated NOTCH3 variants have recently been categorized into high risk (HR), moderate risk (MR), or low risk (LR) for developing early-onset severe SVD. The most severe NOTCH3-associated SVD phenotype is also known as cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy (CADASIL). We aimed to investigate whether NOTCH3 variant risk category is associated with 2-year progression rate of SVD clinical and neuroimaging outcomes in CADASIL...

Mass spectrometry (MS) can detect multiple myeloma-derived monoclonal proteins in peripheral blood (PB) with high sensitivity, potentially serving as a PB assay for measurable residual disease (MRD). This study evaluated the significance of PB MS MRD negativity during post-transplant therapy in patients with newly diagnosed multiple myeloma. Serum samples from 138 patients treated in the phase 3 ATLAS trial of post-transplant maintenance with either carfilzomib, lenalidomide, dexamethasone or lenalidomide alone were analyzed using EXENT MS methodology...

OBJECTIVE: Access to care varies between countries. It is theorized that income-based disparities in access may be reduced in countries with universal health insurance relative to the United States, but data are currently limited. We hypothesized that income-based differences in total hip arthroplasty (THA) utilization and outcomes would be larger in the United States than in Canada. METHODS: We retrospectively compared all patients undergoing THA from 2012 to 2018 in Pennsylvania, the United States, and Ontario, Canada...

While several proximal humerus fractures treated nonsurgically reach satisfactory outcomes, some become symptomatic malunions or nonunions with pain and dysfunction. When joint-preserving options such as malunion or nonunion repair are not optimal because of poor remaining bone stock or glenohumeral arthritis, shoulder arthroplasty is a good option. Because of the semiconstrained design of reverse shoulder arthroplasty, it is effective at improving function when there is notable bony deformity or a torn rotator cuff...

Objective: During young adulthood, drinking and sexual behaviors are both normative and inextricably linked. While this association is well documented, little is known about how students define positive and negative drinking-related sexual experiences. Methods: Thirty-five undergraduates participated in a focus group about sexual experiences in the context of drinking. Thematic analysis was utilized to identify themes in the data. Results: Students' descriptions of positive drinking-related sexual encounters included having a good time, feeling safe, maintaining control over alcohol, as well as feeling safe in drinking contexts where sexual partners are located...

OBJECTIVES: Information obtained from point-of-care ultrasound during cardiopulmonary arrest and resuscitation (POCUS-CA) can be used to identify underlying pathophysiology and provide life-sustaining interventions. However, integration of POCUS-CA into resuscitation care is inconsistent. We used expert consensus building methodology to help identify discrete barriers to clinical integration. We subsequently applied implementation science frameworks to generate generalizable strategies to overcome these barriers...

OBJECTIVES: Chest tube thoracostomy site selection is typically chosen through landmark identification of the fifth intercostal space (ICS). Using point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), studies have shown this site to be potentially unsafe in many adults; however, no study has evaluated this in children. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the safety of the fifth ICS for pediatric chest tube placement, with the secondary aim to identify patient factors that correlate with an unsafe fifth ICS...

BACKGROUND: The BIONYX randomized trial is the first study to evaluate the Resolute Onyx durable polymer-coated zotarolimus-eluting stent (ZES) in all-comers. Furthermore, it is the first trial to assess safety and efficacy of this stent versus the Orsiro biodegradable-polymer sirolimus-eluting stent (SES) in all-comers, paying particular attention to patients with diabetes. It has previously shown promising results until 3 years of follow-up. Understanding the mechanisms that underpin the transition from acute to chronic pain is critical for the development of more effective and targeted treatments. There is growing interest in the contribution of glial cells to this process, with cross-sectional preclinical studies demonstrating specific changes in these cell types capturing targeted timepoints from the acute phase and the chronic phase. In vivo longitudinal assessment of the development and evolution of these changes in experimental animals and humans has presented a significant challenge...

PURPOSE: Real-time prescription benefits (RTPB) shows prescribers patient-, medication-, and pharmacy-specific information on medication pricing, prior authorization requirements, and lower-cost alternatives. RTPB is intended to improve patient satisfaction and prescription fill rates by decreasing out-of-pocket costs for prescriptions. Therefore, we evaluated how RTPB affects prescribing patterns by examining acceptance and subsequent fill rates for RTPB alternative suggestions. METHODS: RTPB was implemented in February 2022 using external vendor interfaces...
