BACKGROUND: Post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) is the main long-term complication of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Several therapies are being evaluated to prevent or to treat PTS. Identifying the patients most likely to benefit from these therapies presents a significant challenge. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to identify risk factors for PTS during the acute phase of DVT. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: We searched the PubMed and Cochrane databases for studies published between January 2000 and January 2021, including randomized clinical trials, meta-analyses, systematic reviews and observational studies...

Thrombosis remains one of the leading causes of death in the world. The history of anticoagulation has evolved considerably from non-specific drugs (i.e., heparins and vitamin K antagonists, VKA) to agents that directly target specific coagulation factors (i.e., argatroban, fondaparinux and direct oral anticoagulants, DOAC). Since the last decade, DOAC are widely used in clinical practice because of their ease to use, their favorable pharmacological profile and the fact that they do not require monitoring. However, despite having a better safety profile than vitamin K antagonist, their bleeding risk is not negligible...

Over the last years, new evidence has accumulated on multiple aspects of diagnosis and management of cerebral venous and dural sinus thrombosis (CVT) including identification of new risk factors, studies on interventional treatment as well as treatment with direct oral anticoagulants. Based on the GRADE questions of the European Stroke Organization guideline on this topic, the new German guideline on CVT is a consensus between expert representatives of Austria, Germany and Switzerland. New recommendations include:• CVT occurring in the first weeks after SARS-CoV-2 vaccination with vector vaccines may be associated with severe thrombocytopenia, indicating the presence of a prothrombotic immunogenic cause (Vaccine-induced immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia; VITT)...

Pesticide contamination poses a significant threat to non-target wildlife, including amphibians, many of which are already highly threatened. This study aims to assess the extent of pesticide exposure in dead frogs collected during a mass mortality event across eastern New South Wales, Australia between July 2021 and March 2022. Liver tissue from 77 individual frogs of six species were analysed for >600 legacy and contemporary pesticides, including rodenticides. More than a third (36 %) of the liver samples contained at least one pesticide, including brodifacoum, dieldrin, DDE, heptachlor/heptachlor epoxide, fipronil sulfone, and 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA)...

BACKGROUND: Catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) for acute iliofemoral deep venous thrombosis (DVT) is an endovenous interventional therapy that can quickly remove the acute thrombus, thereby improving the clinical outcomes of proximal DVT. However, instrumentation of extensive fresh thrombus may be associated with iatrogenic pulmonary embolism (PE). Therefore, we aimed to compare CDT's safety, complications, and perioperative embolic (PE) insults for acute iliofemoral DVT, with and without an IVC filter...

Arterial and venous thromboembolism is a major medical concern that requires therapeutic anticoagulation in various medical fields to prevent its drastic consequences. Despite significant advances in anticoagulant therapy, thrombosis remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Traditional anticoagulants like heparin and vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) have shown efficacy in preventing and treating thrombosis but come with an inherent risk of bleeding due to their non-specific inhibition of multiple coagulation factors...

Scorpions, a group of oldest animals with wide distribution in the world, have a long history of medicinal use. Scorpio, the dried body of Buthus martensii, is a rare animal medicine mainly used for the treatment of liver diseases, spasm, and convulsions in children in China. The venom has been considered as the active substance of scorpions. However, little is known about the small molecules in the venom of scorpions. According to the articles published in recent years, scorpions contain amino acids, fatty acids, steroids, and alkaloids, which endow scorpions with antimicrobial, anticoagulant, metabolism-regulating, and antitumor activities...

Cardiology and all its subspecialties continue to push the envelope in developing new treatment strategies for a wide variety of diseases. After screening more than 1300 articles, we highlight a selection of important cardiology articles published in 2023. Starting with prevention, we note articles that look at the effect of semaglutide in patients with obesity as well as a first-in-class drug, bempedoic acid, on cardiovascular outcomes. We have also examined new evidence comparing conservative management with invasive management of frail, older patients with non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI)...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most commonly observed arrhythmia in the world and its prevalence increases with age. The main and most severe complication of AF is ischemic stroke. Oral anticoagulation (OAC) therapy is the standard of care for stroke prevention in the high risk population. Initiation of this treatment is associated with a substantial risk of bleeding complications. Moreover, there is a group of patients who cannot tolerate OAC. In patients with AF the left atrial appendage (LAA) is the main source of thrombus formation...

The development of novel anticoagulants requires a comprehensive investigational approach that is capable of characterizing different aspects of antithrombotic activity. The necessary experiments include both in vitro assays and studies on animal models. The required in vivo approaches include the assessment of pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic profiles and studies of hemorrhagic and antithrombotic effects. Comparison of anticoagulants with different mechanisms of action and administration types requires unification of the experiment scheme and its adaptation to existing laboratory conditions...

Physicians should be aware of this rare but life-threatening adverse event of B-rapidly accelerated fibrosarcoma (BRAF) and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK). Canine filariosis is caused by filiform nematodes and affects several species of animals as well as humans. The disease produces a wide range of symptoms that can often be confused with other diseases, which increases the complexity of its diagnosis. The search for methodologies to facilitate its diagnosis is a challenge, and specific and differential identification of the parasite species causing the disease holds key to a successful diagnosis. In Colombia, there is a problem of underdiagnosis of filariosis in microfilaremic dogs infected by Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum , and of microfilaremias not related to heartworm disease...

Coagulation management in the patient with cirrhosis has undergone a significant transformation since the beginning of this century, with the concept of a rebalancing between procoagulant and anticoagulant factors. The paradigm that patients with cirrhosis have a greater bleeding tendency has changed, as a result of this rebalancing. In addition, it has brought to light the presence of complications related to thrombotic events in this group of patients. These guidelines detail aspects related to pathophysiologic mechanisms that intervene in the maintenance of hemostasis in the patient with cirrhosis, the relevance of portal hypertension, mechanical factors for the development of bleeding, modifications in the hepatic synthesis of coagulation factors, and the changes in the reticuloendothelial system in acute hepatic decompensation and acute-on-chronic liver failure...
