AimsTo identify the clinical features and prognostic factors of endogenous endophthalmitis caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae.MethodsThis is a retrospective case series of all patients with Klebsiella endophthalmitis managed from January 2006 to December 2015 by Kowloon East Ophthalmic Service. Statistical analysis involved hypothesis testing on the SPSS 18.0 software (SPSS). A significance level of P<0.05 was taken.ResultsIn the 10-year period, K. pneumoniae accounted for 19 out of 39 cases of endogenous endophthalmitis (48...

Through an analysis combining powder XRD, TGA, and19 F and1 H solid-state NMR, it is confirmed for NbO2 F and shown for TaO2 F that both contain hydroxyl defects and metal vacancies when prepared by aqueous solution synthesis. The formulations M1-x □x O2-5x (OH,F)1+5x of both the samples are determined. The effects of the usually applied thermal treatments are examined. Obtaining pure NbO2 F and TaO2 F from these samples, that is, fully removing metal vacancies and hydroxide, while avoiding the formation of M2 O5 , is not that easy...

Advanced batteries with long cycle life and capable of harnessing more energies from multiple electrochemical reactions are both fundamentally interesting and practically attractive. Herein, we report a robust hybrid zinc-battery that makes use of transition-metal-based redox reaction (M-O-OH → M-O, M = Ni and Co) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) to deliver more electrochemical energies of comparably higher voltage with much longer cycle life. The hybrid battery was constructed using an integrated electrode of NiCo2O4 nanowire arrays grown on carbon-coated nickel foam, coupled with a zinc plate anode in alkaline electrolyte...

An imidazolidine-phenolate ligand HL yields quadruple-bridged (μ-NCNimidazolidine )2 (μ-Ophenolate )2 ferromagnetic dinuclear nickel and cobalt complexes. Both kinds of bridges contribute to the ferromagnetic coupling, but the ferromagnetism of these samples is mainly ascribed to the double μ-Ophenolate links, on the basis of density functional theory calculations. These studies demonstrate not only that the short M-O-M angles of the M2 O2 cores favors the parallel alignment of the electrons but also that these angles are the optimal ones for maximizing the ferromagnetic contribution in these complexes...

The electronic structure and magnetic properties of the quasi-1D transition-metal borates PbMBO4 (M  =  Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co) have been investigated by density functional theory, including electronic correlation. The results evidence PbCrBO4 and PbFeBO4 as antiferromagnetic (AFM) semiconductors (intra-chain AFM and inter-chain FM) and PbMnBO4 as a ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor (both intra- and inter-chain FM) in accordance with experimental observations. For non-synthesized PbTiBO4, PbVBO4, and PbCoBO4, the ground-state magnetic structures are paramagnetic, FM, and paramagnetic, respectively...

The low-temperature electrical passivation of an amorphous oxide semiconductor (AOS) thin-film transistor (TFT) is achieved by a deep ultraviolet (DUV) light irradiation-water treatment-DUV irradiation (DWD) method. The water treatment of the first DUV-annealed amorphous indium-gallium-zinc-oxide (a-IGZO) thin film is likely to induce the preferred adsorption of water molecules at the oxygen vacancies and leads to subsequent hydroxide formation in the bulk a-IGZO films. Although the water treatment initially degraded the electrical performance of the a-IGZO TFTs, the second DUV irradiation on the water-treated devices may enable a more complete metal-oxygen-metal lattice formation while maintaining low oxygen vacancies in the oxide films...

Simulated structure factors are found to be in good agreement with experimental structure factors. Local atomic structures from simulations reveal the role of calcium cations as a network modifier, and aluminium cations as a non-tetrahedral network former...

PURPOSE: A method is presented to radiobiologically compare sequential (SEQ) and simultaneously integrated boost (SIB) breast radiotherapy. METHODS: The method is based on identically prescribed biologically effective dose (iso-BED) which was achieved by different prescribed doses due to different fractionation schemes. It is performed by converting the calculated three-dimensional dose distribution to the corresponding BED distribution taking into consideration the different number of fractions for generic α/β ratios...

This cohort study assessed drug susceptibility testing (DST) patterns and associated treatment outcomes from Transnistria, Moldova, from 2009 to 2012. Of 1089 newly registered tuberculosis (TB) patients with available DST results, 556 (51%) had some form of drug resistance, while 369 (34%) had multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). There were four cases of extensively drug-resistant TB. MDR-TB patients had poor treatment success (45%); human immunodeficiency virus positivity and a history of incarceration were associated with an unfavourable treatment outcome...

We assessed the performance of decentralised tuberculosis (TB) out-patient centres in tuberculosis (TB) case notification and treatment success in Armenia. An average threshold case notification of ⩾37/100 000 was seen in centres that had higher numbers of presumptive TB patients, where more TB was diagnosed by in-patient facilities and where TB contacts were examined. The number of doctors and/or TB specialists at centres did not influence case notification. Onsite smear microscopy was significantly associated with a treatment success rate of ⩾85% for new TB patients...

The contiguity and phase of sequence information are intrinsic to obtain complete understanding of the genome and its relationship to phenotype. We report the fabrication and application of a novel nanochannel design that folds megabase lengths of genomic DNA into a systematic back-and-forth meandering path. Such meandering nanochannels enabled us to visualize the complete 5.7 Mbp (1 mm) stained DNA length of a Schizosaccharomyces pombe chromosome in a single frame of a CCD. We were able to hold the DNA in situ while implementing partial denaturation to obtain a barcode pattern that we could match to a reference map using the Poland-Scheraga model for DNA melting...
