Leaf springs are critical components for the railway vehicle safety in which they are installed. Although these components are produced in high-strength alloyed steel and designed to operate under cyclic loading conditions in the high-cyclic fatigue region, their failure is still possible, which can lead to economic and human catastrophes. The aim of this document was to precisely characterise the mechanical crack growth behaviour of the chromium-vanadium alloyed steel representative of leaf springs under cyclic conditions, that is, the crack propagation in mode I...

The low-temperature fatigue crack propagation rate of 925A steel, as a rudder steel for polar special ships, has a crucial impact on the evaluation of the fatigue strength of polar ships. The purpose of this article is to study the fatigue crack propagation rate of 925A steel under different low-temperature conditions from room temperature (RT) to -60 °C. The material was subjected to fatigue crack propagation tests and stress intensity factor tests. The experimental tests were conducted according to the Chinese Standard of GB/T6398-2017...

Developing advanced underwater welding technology for titanium, which is the key structural material for underwater applications, is of great significance for the design, fabrication, and maintenance of submarine equipment. In this study, in order to investigate the underwater welding microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti-4Al-2V alloy, underwater wet laser welding was conducted on Ti-4Al-2V alloy using varying laser power. The microstructure and properties of the welding joints were characterized and analyzed...

PC/ABS composites are commonly used in airbag covers. In this paper, uniaxial tensile experiments of a PC/ABS composite at different temperatures and strain rates were conducted. The results showed that the temperature and loading rate affect the mechanical properties of the PC/ABS composite. As the temperature increases, the yield stress decreases and the strain at the moment of fracture increases, but the strain rate at the same temperature has a relatively small effect on the mechanical properties, which are similar to ductile materials...

Bridge cable wires suffer from alternating stress and environmental erosion, leading to premature failure prior to its design life. This paper investigates the fatigue and mechanical behaviors of corroded bridge cable wires with a zinc-aluminum (Zn-Al) alloy coating. Based on the salt spray corrosion test and microstructure analysis, the anti-corrosion resistance and corrosion appearance characteristics of the Zn-Al alloy coating and galvanized coating were investigated. The Zn-Al alloy coating was superior in resistance to corrosion fatigue for the improvement in toughness and the generation of anti-corrosion Zn-Al and Fe-Zn-Al phases...

The current protocol used to determine if an individual is osteoporotic relies on assessment of the individual's bone mineral density (BMD), which allows clinicians to judge the condition of a patient with respect to their peers. This, in essence, evaluates a person's fracture risk, because BMD is a good surrogate measure for strength and stiffness. In recent studies, the authors were the first to produce fracture toughness (FT) data from osteoporotic (OP) and osteoarthritic (OA) patients, by using a testing technique which basically analyzes the prerequisite stress conditions for the onset of growth of a major crack through cancellous bone tissue...

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Pelvic ring fractures are becoming more common in the aging population and can prove to be fatal, having mortality rates between 10% and 16%. Stabilization of these fractures is challenging and often require immediate internal fixation. Therefore, it is necessary to have a biomechanical understanding of the different fixation techniques for pelvic ring fractures. METHODS: A previously validated three-dimensional finite element model of the lumbar spine, pelvis, and femur was used for this study...

OBJECTIVES: Multilayer monolithic zirconia (M-Zr) crowns can be engineered to achieve gradational translucency and color intensity. However, this modification may compromise the mechanical strength, raising concerns regarding the ability of M-Zr crowns to withstand occlusal stresses. The effects of M-Zr crown thickness on translucency and ability to endure occlusal forces were investigated at different tooth positions (incisors, premolars, and molars). The objective was to determine the minimal thickness of M-Zr crowns used in tooth preparation to meet aesthetic and functional demands...

Present study investigates the effects of probe size geometry on thermodynamic kinetics, rheology, and microstructure of wheat and tapioca starch. Ultrasound treatment using different probe diameters (20 mm and 100 mm) significantly influenced the gelatinization process. Results showed reduced enthalpy (ΔH) and Gibbs energy (ΔG), indicating enhanced gelatinization efficiency. According to the results, using a 20 mm and 100 mm probe leads to a reduction of 52.7 % and 68.6 % in reaction enthalpy for wheat starch compared to native starch, respectively...

The problem of wellbore leakage is a key challenge in the petroleum industry, limiting drilling progress and increasing drilling costs. Plugging agents play a role in repairing leaks and fractures; however, traditional plugging materials generally have low mechanical strength, poor adaptability to permeable strata, limited water absorption and expansion capabilities, and poor temperature and salt resistance. To address these limitations, a pioneering polyacrylic acid-polyacrylamide (PAA/PAM) double-network hydrogel was synthesized through aqueous solution polymerization in this study...

This study investigates the viscoelastic deformation mechanisms of bone as a response to Vickers hardness indentation. We utilized advanced high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to investigate a distinct deformation pattern that originates from the indentation site within the bone matrix. The focus of our research was to analyze a unique deformation mechanism observed in bone tissue, which has been colloquially termed as "screw-like" due to its resemblance to a screw thread when viewed under an optical microscope...

Ankle instability, which can be attributed to either the deltoid or lateral ligamentous complex, may be both a cause and a consequence of ankle fractures. This study aimed to assess postoperative ankle instability in patients with displaced ankle fractures. A total of 54 patients with displaced ankle fractures were included. Malleolar fractures were surgically reduced and fixated, and if necessary, the syndesmosis was stabilized. Concomitant deltoid injuries were left unrepaired. Ankle stress radiographs were taken approximately 25...

BACKGROUND: Up to 25% of the tooth extraction after root canal treatment could be attributed to the vertical root fracture (VRF). The treatment choice for teeth with VRF would mostly be the extraction despite some repairing methods were also reported. The repairing treatment result of VRF would mostly depend on the fixation strength and the bioactivity of the repairing materials, especially for the posterior teeth with high masticating stresses. This case report designed a novel surgical treatment approach for the VRF of posterior teeth...

The global burden of osteoporosis continues to rise with an ageing population. Untreated osteoporotic fractures not only heighten the risk of subsequent fractures but are associated with excess mortality. Although primary care guidelines consistently stress the importance of secondary fracture prevention, fewer than 20% of patients are appropriately treated for osteoporosis following an initial osteoporotic fracture. This worldwide phenomenon is known as the osteoporosis care gap. This literature review examines the barriers to secondary fracture prevention in primary care and evaluates the effectiveness of targeted primary care interventions...
