Golf is a popular sport; however, there is a paucity of data in relation to golf-associated fractures, and the rate and timing of returning to golf. The aim of this review is to describe golf-associated fractures, including epidemiology, management, and timing of returning to golf following treatment. A literature search was performed using MEDLINE/PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science. Data were extracted and summarized in a narrative synthesis. A total of 436 articles were identified with an initial search of which 58 met the inclusion criteria...

INTRODUCTION: Historically, total hip arthroplasty (THA) in very young patients has been associated with lower survivorship. However, the long-term outcomes of THA using short stems for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) in very young patients remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the long-term outcomes of the Mayo conservative hip system, a short metaphyseal stabilised stem, in patients with ONFH aged ≦30 years. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 104 joints in 76 patients with ONFH who underwent THA using the Mayo conservative hip system with a minimum follow-up of 8 years...

Neglecting the coal damage effect around a borehole could result in low accuracy of gas extraction seepage analysis. A fluid-solid coupling model incorporating coal stress and damage, gas diffusion, and seepage was established. Reliability of the proposed model was validated using field data. Variation characteristics of gas-water phase parameters in the borehole damage zone during gas drainage were analyzed. Meanwhile, effects of equivalent plastic strain, lateral pressure coefficient, internal friction angle, cohesion, Young's modulus, and Poisson's ratio on the damage state and spatiotemporal change properties of gas extraction flow were investigated...

Hydraulic fracturing technology has been widely used in the tight reservoir reconstruction. Unfortunately, with the deepening of mining depth and the increase of geo-stress, the propagation mechanism of medium-pressure fractures in the reservoir is significantly different from that of conventional shallow reservoirs. Based on the combined finite discrete element method, this paper conducts numerical simulation research on deep tight sandstone reservoirs in the west. The discrete fracture network modeling method is used to establish a tight sandstone reservoir model with natural bedding, and the influence of geo-stress difference and natural fracture strength on hydraulic fracture propagation law in a high geo-stress environment is discussed in detail...

BACKGROUND: After femoral oncological knee arthroplasty, some patients suffer from rotating axis fracture, which significantly impacts the life span of the rotating hinge knee (RHK) prosthesis. This research aimed to analyze the biomechanical response of anatomical gastrocnemius reconstruction and assess whether it could reduce the risk of rotating axis breakage by finite element (FE) analysis. METHODS: A femur-prosthesis-tibia FE model was established using the data from CT scans...

BACKGROUND: In end-stage arthritis indicated for total ankle arthroplasty (TAA), full-thickness cartilage damage, subchondral bone defect/shaving, and fluttering of the talar dome occur, shortening the distance between the tibial and talar insertions of ligaments and leading to laxity of ligaments surrounding the ankle joint. Under such conditions, medial ligaments (including the deltoid ligament) would not be expected to function properly. To stabilize the ankle joint during the stance phase, medial ligament function under tension is important...

Naturally occurring coatings on aluminum metal, such as its oxide or hydroxide, serve to protect the material from corrosion. Understanding the conditions under which these coatings mechanically fail is therefore expected to be an important aspect of predictive models for aluminum component lifetimes. To this end, we develop and apply a molecular dynamics (MD) modeling framework for conducting tension tests that is capable of isolating factors governing the mechanical strength as a function of coating chemistry, defect morphology, and variables associated with the loading path...

Since the mechanism underlying real-time acquisition of mechanical strength during laser-induced skin wound fusion remains unclear, and collagen is the primary constituent of skin tissue, this study investigates the structural and mechanical alterations in collagen at temperatures ranging from 40 °C to 60 °C using various spectroscopic techniques and molecular dynamics calculations. The COMSOL Multiphysics coupling is employed to simulate the three-dimensional temperature field, stress-strain relationship, and light intensity distribution in the laser thermal affected zone of skin wounds during dual-beam laser welding process...

Older children over 8 years old are at higher risk of elbow joint stiffness after treatment of supracondylar humeral fractures. The objective of this study was to improve the Slongo's external fixation system for treating supracondylar humeral fractures in older children. This would be achieved by increasing fixation strength and providing a theoretical basis through finite element analysis and mechanical testing. A 13-year-old female patient with a history of previous fracture was selected for CT data processing to create a three-dimensional model of the distal humerus fracture...

Condylar-base-associated multiple mandibular fractures are more prevalent than single ones. Direct trauma to mandibular symphysis, body or angle are prone to induce indirect condylar fracture. However, little is known about the effects of various rigid internal fixation modalities in condylar base for relevant multiple mandibular fractures, especially when we are confused in the selection of operative approach. Within the finite element analysis, straight-titanium-plate implanting positions in condylar base contained posterolateral zone (I), anterolateral zone (II), and intermediate zone (III)...

Electrochemical-mechanical coupling poses enormous challenges to the interfacial and structural stability but create new opportunities to design innovative all-solid-state batteries from scratch. Relying on the solid-solid constraint in the space-limited domain structure, we propose to exploit the lithiation-induced stress to drive the active materials creep, thereby improving the structural integrity. For demonstration, we fabricate the creep-type all-solid-state cathode using creepable Se material and an all-in-one rigid ionic/electronic conducting Mo6Se8 framework...

INTRODUCTION: Proximal humerus fractures are usually treated with locking plates, which could present recurrence, screw penetration, joint varization. The push-pull principle was introduced to prevent these risks and showed promising results; a dedicated design was then developed and this feasibility study aims to compare the biomechanical performances of such dedicated push-pull plate with the traditional locking plate using finite elements. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The humerus geometry was obtained from Sawbone CT-scans; the geometries of a traditional locking plate and of the dedicated push-pull one were used...

The aquaculture industry frequently employs various slaughter methods that subject fish to inhumane conditions, resulting in significant suffering. This study examined the effects of electrical method on the welfare of farmed fish ( Mesopotamichthys sharpeyi ) compared to air asphyxiation. Fish captured with electricity exhibited calm behavior until death, in contrast to fish treated with air asphyxiation, which exhibited violent responses within 4 minutes of capture. The electrical method achieved a complete state of unconsciousness 7 minutes faster than air asphyxiation...

The parameter identification of failure models for composite plies can be cumbersome, due to multiple effects as the consequence of brittle fracture. Our work proposes an iterative, nonlinear design of experiments (DoE) approach that finds the most informative experimental data to identify the parameters of the Tsai-Wu, Tsai-Hill, Hoffman, Hashin, max stress and Puck failure models. Depending on the data, the models perform differently, therefore, the parameter identification is validated by the Euclidean distance of the measured points to the closest ones on the nominal surface...
