The COVID-19 pandemic resulted in imminent shortages of personal protective equipment such as face masks. To address the shortage, new sterilization or decontamination procedures for masks are quickly being developed and employed. Dry heat and steam sterilization processes are easily scalable and allow treatment of large sample sizes, thus potentially presenting fast and efficient decontamination routes, which could significantly ease the rapidly increasing need for protective masks globally during a pandemic like COVID-19...

The present work studied ibuprofen degradation using titanium dioxide as a photocatalyst. Mechanistic aspects were presented and the preferred attack sites by the OH˙ radical on the ibuprofen molecule were detailed, based on experimental and simple theoretical-computational results. Although some previous studies show mechanistic proposals, some aspects still need to be investigated, such as the participation of 4-isobutylacetophenone in the ibuprofen degradation and the preferred regions of attack by OH˙ radicals...

There are more than 160 defined nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) species within Mycobacterium genus. In recent years, the number of NTM species associated with human infections and the infections caused by them have been reported at increasing rates. The identification of these species by phenotypic methods is difficult, laborious, and unlikely to obtain reliable results. Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) MALDI-TOF MS has proven to be a good method for the identification of bacteria and yeasts in routine laboratory practices...

The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by Fe(II) or Fe(III) for environmental decontamination is severely limited by the low conversion rate from Fe(III) to Fe(II). Here, we found that this puzzling problem could virtually be solved by introducing trace amounts of S2- . With the addition of 0.2 mM S2- , the bisphenol A (BPA) degradation efficiency and total organic carbon (TOC) removal in PMS/Fe(III) system were improved by 3.8 and 6.0 times, respectively. Meanwhile, the kobs and PMS utilization efficiency also markedly increased by 650% and 160%, respectively...

A systematic review of seven studies on infections related to contaminated ultrasound probes showed that the infections were related to a failure in the decontamination process of ultrasound devices used on immature skin of neonates in an intensive care unit and transesophageal echocardiography probes. Six of the studies involved outbreaks in patients who underwent transesophageal echocardiography either during or after surgery or as a part of treatment for a nonsurgical cardiac condition. The evidence shows links between the infection outbreaks and environmental contamination, lack of standardized ultrasound probe disinfection processes, inadequate storage, and lack of monitoring of probe integrity...

A versatile, functional nanomaterial for the removal of ionic and non-ionic pollutants is presented in this work. For that purpose, the high charge mica Na-4-Mica was exchanged with the cationic surfactant (C16 H33 NH(CH3 )2 )+ . The intercalation of the tertiary amine in the swellable nano-clay provides the optimal hydrophilic/hydrophobic nature in the bidimensional galleries of the nanomaterial responsible for the dual functionality. The organo-mica, made by functionalization with C16 H33 NH3 + , was also synthesized for comparison purposes...

Although we have been studying more and more over the years to try to answer the many questions that remain regarding everything that circulates around this disease which affects implants, nothing has yet been taken as an official consensus regarding its surgical treatment. There are still many proposed protocols, each of which has been shown to have comforting results and promising prospects, but no total predictability...

Perovskites (the general formula of ABO3 ) with versatile substrates can serve as desirable catalysts to initiate advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for environmental remediation. However, the knowledge regarding the active centers remains piecemeal and unclear, such as how the redox metal centers of B site, inert metals of A site, oxygen vacancies, and direct oxidation of catalysts govern the chemical degradation of aqueous pollutants. This study aimed to identify principal alternations in physicochemical and electrical properties of ABO3 -based perovskites modified with partial/overall substitution at A/B sites and synthesized at different conditions...

The presence of diverse pollutants in water has been threating human health and aquatic ecosystems on a global scale. For more than a century, chemical oxidation using strongly oxidizing species was one of the most effective technologies to destruct pollutants and to ensure a safe and clean water supply. However, the removal of increasing amount of pollutants with higher structural complexity, especially the emerging micropollutants with trace concentrations in the complicated water matrix, requires excessive dosage of oxidant and/or energy input, resulting in a low cost-effectiveness and possible secondary pollution...

Large scale cation exchanges were performed on zeolite powder at 80 °C for 2 h using 1 M magnesium chloride (MgCl2 ) aqueous solutions. XRF, ICP, and EDX analyses indicate a successful cationic exchange process without the modification of the zeolite structure as shown by XRD and solid-state NMR analyses. Composite materials (granulates and molded parts) were manufactured using to extrusion and injection processes...

Cage washing is a key process of the biosecurity program in rodent facilities. For the current study, we developed systems (i. e., magnet attachments, quantitative biologic indicators (Q-BI), and measurement of thermal disinfection at equipment level) to assess the microbial decontamination achieved by a rodent equipment washer with and without thermal disinfection. 99% of the magnets remained in position to hold Q-BI and temperature probes inside cages, water bottles or at equipment level across a cabinet washer chamber with loads dedicated to either housing or drinking devices...

In recent years, the activation of persulfates (peroxydisulfate (PDS) and peroxymonosulfate (PMS)) via transition metal ions for contaminants degradation has received extensive attention in water treatment. There has been growing interest on the mechanism (radical versus non-radical pathway) of activation processes. Interestingly, in contrast to copper, iron or cobalt ions regarded as effective activators for persulfates, manganese ion (Mn(II)) is inefficient for persulfates activation. Inspired by the enhanced stability of manganese species by ligands, this study for the first time systematically investigated the Mn(II)/persulfates with different ligands as a novel oxidation technology...
