BACKGROUND: Previous studies regarding donor-recipient size and sex matching in heart transplantation (HTx) mainly included Caucasians with only a small portion of Asians. Even predicted heart mass (PHM) has not yet been elucidated in Asians. We evaluated the association between donor-recipient sex and size matching, including mismatching by PHM, and post-heart transplant survival in Korea. METHODS: We enrolled 660 adult HTx recipients between January 2014 and December 2020 using the Korean Organ Transplant Registry data...

Self-expandable metal stent (SEMS) placement is commonly used for palliation of left-sided malignant colorectal obstruction (MCO). However, right-sided MCO is usually treated surgically. Recent studies that compared palliative SEMS insertion and emergency surgery in right-sided MCOs have reported conflicting results. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of palliative SEMS placement in left-sided MCOs and right-sided MCOs and to investigate the predictive factors for clinical success and risk factors for complications...

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrated a J-shaped relationship between low diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and adverse clinical outcomes in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that was sensitive to revascularization. Hypothesized herein, was that this relationship differs between patients with multivessel disease (MVD) and those with single-vessel disease due to differing degrees of myocardial ischemic burden. METHODS: Among 9,983 AMI patients from the Korea Acute Myocardial Infarction Registry database who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention and were followed up for a median duration of 3...

Two new lipo-decapeptides, namely taeanamides A and B ( 1 and 2 ), were discovered from the Gram-positive bacterium Streptomyces sp. AMD43, which was isolated from a mudflat sample from Anmyeondo, Korea. The exact molecular masses of 1 and 2 were revealed by high-resolution mass spectrometry, and the planar structures of 1 and 2 were elucidated using NMR spectroscopy. The absolute configurations of 1 and 2 were determined using a combined analysis of 1 H-1 H coupling constants and ROESY correlations, the advanced Marfey's method, and bioinformatics...

We aimed to conduct the largest study evaluating the impact of cardiac troponin (TnI) status on mid- and long-term mortality in patients admitted for acute heart failure (AHF) as compared between patients with ischemic (IHF) vs. non-ischemic heart failure (non-IHF). Among 5625 patients from the Korea Acute Heart Failure (KorAHF) registry, 4396 eligible patients with TnI measurement were analyzed. The patients were included on admission with the diagnosis of AHF, and TnI level was measured on the day of admission...

Background/Aims: The prospective Crohn's Disease Clinical Network and Cohort study is a nationwide multicenter cohort study of patients with Crohn's disease (CD) in Korea, aiming to prospectively investigate the clinical features and long-term prognosis associated with CD. Methods: Patients diagnosed with CD between January 2009 and September 2019 were prospectively enrolled. They were divided into two cohorts according to the year of diagnosis: cohort 1 (diagnosed between 2009 and 2011) versus cohort 2 (between 2012 and 2019)...

METHODS: This was a retrospective analysis of 570 patients who underwent LAR for rectal cancer at National Cancer Center, Republic of Korea. Endoscopic ultrasonography-guided intervention has gradually become a standard treatment for peripancreatic fluid collections (PFCs). However, it is difficult to popularize the procedure in Korea because of restrictions on insurance claims regarding the use of endoscopic accessories, as well as the lack of standardized Korean clinical practice guidelines. The Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (KSGE) appointed a Task Force to develope medical guidelines by referring to the manual for clinical practice guidelines development prepared by the National Evidence-Based Healthcare Collaborating Agency...

We investigated spatiotemporal distributions of dissolved inorganic nutrients and organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) in coastal waters and land-based fish farm wastewater to determine effects of wastewater on seawater of Jeju Island, Korea. The nutrient concentrations in seawater were lower than in wastewater with negative correlations against salinity, indicating a terrestrial source. Wastewater-derived DOC and DON were transported offshore while wastewater-derived inorganic nutrients were effectively removed, likely via biological production, and this was closely linked to decline in N:P ratios...

There has been increased use of self-expandable metal stents (SEMS) in treating malignant colorectal obstruction (MCO). The aim of this study was to investigate factors that are associated with the outcomes of SEMS placement for MCO.Clinical data from patients who underwent SEMS placement for MCO at 6 hospitals in Honam province of South Korea between 2009 and 2018 were reviewed retrospectively. Eight hundred two patients were identified and their data were analyzed. Technical success, clinical success, complications, and predictors of outcome were included as main outcome measures...

Based on the results of combined spectroscopic analyses, the structures of spongosoritins A-D ( 1 - 4 ) were determined to possess a 2-methoxy-1-imidazole-5-one core connecting the indole moieties, and these were linked by a linear urea bridge for spongocarbamides A ( 5 ) and B ( 6 ). In this study, we screened the Korea Chemical Bank library for a bioluminescent reporter assay to identify molecules capable of acting against M. abscessus. On application of the assay, rifamycin O showed excellent in vitro activity with a narrow range of the minimum inhibitory concentration required to inhibit the growth of 90% of the bacterium (MIC90 = 4.0-6.2 μM); its in vivo efficacy in the zebrafish ( Danio rerio ) infection model was comparable to that of rifabutin at 25 μM...
