BACKGROUND: The rarity and heterogeneity of mucormycosis make treatment variable, and no prospective or randomized clinical trials exist in plastic surgery literature. The use of wound vacuum-assisted closure in combination with the instillation of amphotericin B to treat cutaneous mucormycosis is not well documented. CASE PRESENTATION: A 53-year-old man underwent left Achilles tendon reconstruction with allograft after a complete tear during exercise. About 1 week after the operation, he began having incisional breakdown later found to be secondary to mucormycosis infection, prompting presentation to an emergency department...

BACKGROUND: Telephone hotlines in infectious diseases (ID) are part of antimicrobial stewardship programs designed to provide support and expertise in ID and to control antibiotic resistance. The aim of the study was to characterize the activity of the ID hotlines and estimate their usefulness for general practitioners (GPs). METHODS: This was a multicenter prospective observational study in different French regions. ID teams involved in antimicrobial stewardship with a hotline for GPs were asked to record their advice from April 2019 to June 2022...

We performed a narrative review of articles applicable to anesthesiologists' and nurse anesthetists' choices of who works each statutory holiday for operating room and non-operating room anesthesia. We include search protocols and detailed supplementary annotated comments. Studies showed that holiday staff scheduling is emotional. Working on holidays often is more stressful and undesirable than comparable workdays. Intrinsic motivation may overall, among practitioners, be greater by preferentially scheduling practitioners who choose to work on holidays, for compensation, before mandating that practitioners who would prefer to be off must work on holidays...

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors increasing waiting time (WT) and length of stay (LOS) in patients, which may cause delays in decision-making in the emergency departments (ED). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients who arrived at a training hospital in the central region of Izmir City, Turkey, during the first quarter of 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. WT and LOS were the outcome variables of the study, and gender, age, arrival type, triage level determined based on the clinical acuity, diagnosis encoded based on International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD-10), the existence of diagnostic tests or consultation status were the identified factors...

To rule out coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) in patients scheduled to undergo emergency medical procedures, SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) must be performed. In developing countries, the use of SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR has been limited by its unavailability and long processing time. Hence, a quick screening score to predict COVID-19 may help healthcare practitioners determine which patients without acute respiratory symptoms can safely undergo an emergency medical procedure...

An overview of the management of the military patient referred to neurosurgery consultation, especially considering spinal diseases that both constitute an operational healthissue in the forces and appear of special interest. The objective was to describe the reasons, demographics, and care pathways, addressed to the neurosurgeon...

PURPOSE: The published information on virtual supervision (VS) in ophthalmology is not well described. This scoping review describes the evidence and potential role for VS in ophthalmic practice and education. METHODS: A literature search strategy was developed in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Anti-immunoglobulin-like cell adhesion molecule 5 (IGLON5), a disease first described in 2014 by Sabater et al ., is characterised by dysphonia, dysphagia, stridor and dysautonomia. We discuss the case of a patient presenting to the emergency department with anti-IGLON5 associated airway compromise following progressive reduced vocal cord movement requiring a surgical tracheostomy. We discuss the outpatient and emergency presentation of this case along with the available literature on anti-IGLON5. We aim to remind ENT practitioners to look beyond the common diagnoses and consider the diagnosis of anti-IGLON5 disease when faced with the symptoms listed above...

It is now possible to have an X-ray examination outside the hospital in nursing homes or to bring the service to frail, vulnerable or disabled patients. A visit to the hospital can be a frightening experience for vulnerable patients living with dementia or other neurological disorder...

The operational cleavage between the US public health and medical care systems contributed to the country's difficulty in containing community spread of COVID-19 in the pandemic's first months. We provide an overview of the independent evolution of these two systems, drawing on case examples and publicly available outcome data, to demonstrate how three fundamental elements of epidemic response-case finding, mitigating transmission, and treatment-were undermined by the lack of coordination between public health and medical care and how these gaps contributed to health disparities...

External auditory canal Carcinomas are rare and aggressive tumors and their prognosis depends on early diagnosis. Their clinical similarity to necrotizing otitis is a source of error and therefore of diagnostic delay. Hence the interest of our study which consists in providing ENT specialists and all practitioners with the necessary clinical, evolutionary, radiological, biological and histological elements to avoid diagnostic errors. This is a retrospective study of all patients who were hospitalized for necrotizing otitis in the department of otolaryngology of the hospital of specialties of Rabat spread over a period of 5 years...

Recycling construction waste in urban cities has attracted wide attention in the government department and building industry worldwide owing to numerous benefits in economics, the environment, and society for sustainable development. Most of the research was focused on the scope of first-tier/new first-tier cities. At the same time, less attention has been paid to second-tier cities, which should be further considered because of their significant potential for increasing construction waste. BACKGROUND: Introduction: Military Role 1 practitioners have difficulty maintaining skill competency by working solely in military medical treatment facilities. Recognizing this, the Army Medical Department has renewed focus on physician specialty-specific Individual Critical Task Lists (ICTL) and is increasing the number of military-civilian partnerships, wherein small military treatment teams work full-time in civilian trauma centers. Yet, data to validate this approach is lacking. We hypothesize military Role 1 practitioners working full-time at a civilian Level 1 trauma center would attain similar resuscitation-specific procedural frequency to providers deployed to an active combat zone, and use the emergency medicine (EM) ICTL to compare select procedural frequency between a cohort of trauma patients from a civilian Level 1 trauma center and a cohort of combat casualties from the Department of Defense Trauma Registry (DODTR)...
