REVIEW
A Dhanya Mackeen, Maranda V Sullivan, Vincenzo Berghella
The preoperative preparation for cesarean delivery is a multistep approach for which protocols should exist at each hospital system. These protocols should be guided by the findings of this review. The interventions reviewed and recommendations made for this review have a common goal of decreasing maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality related to cesarean delivery (CD). The preoperative time period starts prior to the patient's arrival to the hospital and ends immediately prior to skin incision. Skin cleansing in addition to CDC recommendations of showering with either soap or an antiseptic solution at least the night prior to a procedure has not been shown to further decrease rates of infection...

Objectives Our objectives were to compare patient perceived control and experience with outpatient versus inpatient cervical ripening. Study Design This is a retrospective mixed-methods analysis of a quality improvement initiative focused on the impact to patients of incorporating outpatient cervical ripening into routine practice. Postpartum inpatients who had elected for outpatient cervical ripening (outpatients) and those who met criteria for outpatient cervical ripening but opted for an inpatient setting (inpatients) were invited to participate in the study...

OBJECTIVES: Even though the idea of painless birth is more than 100 years old, it is still underrepresented in some parts of the world despite progress in science, education, anesthesia, spinal and epidural needles, development of catheters, new drugs, and infusion pumps. Maternal care should basically be the safety of the patient (in this case two patients) and also provide all kinds of protection in the form of a multidisciplinary team with an anesthesiologist, especially when it comes to pain therapy and anesthesia for women in labor...

Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare acute-onset neurological disease with significant morbidity and mortality. The risk of GBS increases after delivery. Labor and delivery presents many possible risk factors for GBS. However, risk factors and prognosis of postpartum GBS remain unclear due to its low incidence. Here, we first present a patient with a history of postpartum GBS who returned for an elective repeat cesarean section (C-section). For her previous delivery, the patient received spinal anesthesia for an urgent C-section...

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), also known as Devic disease, poses unique challenges in obstetrical anesthesia, with limited research available. This case report presents the anesthetic management of a 43-year-old gravida 2 para 1 (G2P1) woman with NMO undergoing labor induction at 39 weeks of gestation. Having received uneventful epidural labor analgesia in her first pregnancy, she faced the delicate decision of neuraxial anesthesia in light of her NMO diagnosis, which was made following her initial pregnancy...

OBJECTIVE: Unlike other types of acute pain, labor pain is considered physiological. Due to the heterogeneous management during labor, there is a lack of intention to define quality of care of peripartal analgesia. This study presents the first results of the national register for this evaluation. METHODS: This prospective cross-sectional study, conducted in five different German level-three hospitals, included women after vaginal childbirth between January 2020 and January 2022...

BACKGROUND: Labor pain varies significantly among pregnant women, ranging from mild to extremely distressing. Non-pharmacologic pain relief methods during vaginal birth are increasingly popular, either as a complement to pharmacologic agents or at times as the primary method of pain relief. Multiple trials have reported that manual or by-hand massage reduces labor pain. The effectiveness of full-body mechanical massage using electric massage chairs on labor pain remains unexplored. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate mechanical massage using electric massage chair on labor pain in nulliparous women...

Chronic pain is a widespread condition limiting adults' daily activities and labor force participation. In the US, withdrawal from the workforce could be associated with loss of health insurance coverage, while lack of health insurance coverage can limit access to diagnosis and management of chronic health conditions. We used a longitudinal cohort study of middle-aged adults to investigate whether chronic pain is reciprocally associated with coverage by any insurance and type of insurance coverage over a 2-year period (2018 and 2020)...

BACKGROUND: According to clinical data, a significant percentage of patients experience pain after surgery, highlighting the importance of alleviating postoperative pain. The current approach involves intravenous self-control analgesia, often utilizing opioid analgesics such as morphine, sufentanil, and fentanyl. Surgery for colorectal cancer typically involves general anesthesia. Therefore, optimizing anesthetic management and postoperative analgesic programs can effectively reduce perioperative stress and enhance postoperative recovery...

There is ample evidence to suggest that upright positions and mobility during labor improve birth outcome, including shorter duration of childbirth and reduced risk of cesarean section. The use of nonpharmacological interventions for pain management during childbirth are recommended by major health-care institutions and medical providers, however, the current methodologies for training coping strategies for use during labor have not shown to be effective on mobility or birth outcome. The purpose of this study was to apply an in-vivo teaching technology to the current childbirth model to prompt an imitative repertoire of empirically demonstrated labor coping strategies...

Korean Native Black Goats deliver mainly during the cold season. However, in winter, there is a high risk of stunted growth and mortality for their newborns. Therefore, we conducted this study to develop a KNBG parturition detection system that detects and provides managers with early notification of the signs of parturition. The KNBG parturition detection system consists of triaxial accelerometers, gateways, a server, and parturition detection alarm terminals. Then, two different data, the labor and non-labor data, were acquired and a Decision Tree algorithm was used to classify them...

This cross-sectional descriptive study aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal positions during the expulsion phase and perineal outcomes in 367 eutocic births attended by midwives or midwifery residents at a public hospital in northern Spain in 2018. A total of 94.3% of women opted for horizontal positions. Limited sacral retroversion was observed in 71.7%, potentially influencing perineal outcomes. A low incidence of tears indicated effective management during the expulsive phase, with an episiotomy rate of 15...

BACKGROUND: Childbirth self-efficacy is a pregnant women's perception of their ability to cope with labor stress. Low childbirth self-efficacy is linked to pain intolerance and poor labor progression, which increase the possibility of operative delivery. However, Ethiopia has limited data.
