Since there is no nationwide system and documentation of congenital malformations in Germany, local health authorities were not able to respond to the question of an increase in limb reduction defects occurring on the coast of Northern Germany. Previously, such an increase had been reported by the media in England in 1994. For limb reduction defects, the feasibility and efficiency of the so-called "Magdeburg-model" for monitoring congenital malformations is demonstrated. This model provides data on reduction defects for analysing regional (Magdeburg versus Magdeburg county) and temporal trends, and for classifying reduction defects...

OBJECTIVE: The authors sought to determine whether the clinical manifestations of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders are correlated in affected sibling pairs. METHOD: They examined, in 256 sibling pairs concordant for DSM-III-R schizophrenia and 457 sibling pairs concordant for all nonaffective psychoses ascertained in the Irish Study of High-Density Schizophrenia Families, similarity for 1) symptoms, course, and outcome; 2) symptom factors; and 3) syndromes, defined by latent class analysis...

Manuel Straub was one of the forefathers of Dutch ophthalmology and is well known for his early work on phacogenic uveitis and refraction. In this historical account of the rise of ophthalmology in the Netherlands, the author traces Straub's significant role and reflects on how his own fate became inextricably linked with Straub and other illustrious Dutch ophthalmologists, such as W.P.C. Zeeman, Otto Roelofs, and Arend Hagedoorn.

UNLABELLED: The etiology of anaemia associated with tumours is multifactorial. One of the mechanisms of development of anaemia in tumours are so-called chronic diseases anaemias, the main feature of which is inadequate production of endogenous erythropoietin (EPO). The objective of the investigation was to test the effect of recombinant human erythropoietin (rHuEPO) in the treatment of anaemia (rise of haematocrit, Hb) in patients with chronic lymphatic leukaemia (CLL) and multiple myeloma (MM) and the effect of this treatment on the quality of life...

Tin-117 has certain physical characteristics (half-life of 13.6 days, low-energy-conversion electrons, gamma photon of 158.6 keV) that suggest that it may be a favorable agent for radionuclide therapy. It has been shown in animal models that Sn-117m in the chemical form Sn(4+)diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid localizes selectively in bone. The authors therefore studied its whole-body distribution in 10 patients to obtain absorbed dose estimates for therapy. The results showed that more than 50% of the administered activity was absorbed in the bones of patients with metastatic carcinoma...

Bacteriological diagnosis was applied to Douglas' pouch swabs taken off 119 patients, most of them with non-inflammatory genital diseases. Purely anaerobic cultures were recorded from 11.8 per cent, mixed anaerobic-aerobic cultures from 8.4 per cent, and purely aerobic cultures from 56.3 per cent. Cultures remained sterile in 23.5 per cent of all cases. Forty-six of those patients were afflicted with uterine myomatosis, a group from which the following results were obtained: purely anaerobic cultures in 21...

The existing literature dealing with the phasic orienting response (OR) in schizophrenia, examining, for the most part, the skin conductance component (SCOR), reports conflicting results with divergent implications for the nature of the attentional dysfunction in these patients. The present authors have contributed to that literature and to its divergencies. The present report addresses this issue by applying a common set of response definitions and uniform statistical-analytic procedures to the previously gathered electrodermal data obtained independently in each author's laboratory...

The authors report on two woman patients with confirmed Wilson's disease (hepatolenticular degeneration) who had neurological deficits and showed typical changes evident from laboratory data. Both computed tomography and magnetic resonance tomography revealed degenerative changes in the basal ganglia, especially of the lenticular nucleus, MR showing these defects more clearly than CT. There was a noticeable symmetrical enhancement of signals in the lenticular nucleus which was particularly evident on the image basing on the T2 (spin-spin relaxation time constant) values...

In January 1984 the River Dee in north Wales was contaminated with phenol, with subsequent contamination of the tap water received by about two million consumers. A retrospective postal survey of 594 households was undertaken to determine whether consumption of this contaminated water was associated with illness. Subjects in areas that received contaminated water reported significantly more gastrointestinal illness than those in a nearby unexposed area (32.6% v 8.7%, p less than 0.00001) as well as reporting a higher incidence of any symptoms (43...

The flexible cassette is a detector of undisputable value, particularly in the radiology of patients who have been subjected to trauma, patients who cannot be transported and above all in "locked" joints. Thus the authors think that it is indispensable for all radiologists to have a set of flexible cassettes at their disposal.

In a third information of our long-term study with now 304 cases we report on 54 cases with monotherapy-only orchiectomy, only hormones and combination of boths. With it the rectal palpable results have coincided significantly with the histological findings in all 3 therapeutic forms. As for the therapeutic result no difference is to be seen either histological or clinical after a 3 years' observation period. We cannot tell anything now about optimal methods of treatment with regard to the histological starting material...

31 children, presenting with rather uncharacteristic symptoms of an infectious disease and being referred to this clinic mostly because of lymphadenitis of the neck (81%) and/or signs of meningitis (45%), were seen within a period of only eight weeks and proved to suffer from Leptospirosis (L. grippotyphosa). The majority of the patients belonged to the age group of one to six years and lived in rural environs. Our observation is considered to relate to a Leptospirosis epidemic and suggests, as opposed to the general acceptance, a much higher incidence of Leptospirosis in this country and, moreover, in children...

The results of 30 persons could be evaluated. It is shown that under these experimental conditions the form of visual evoked potentials is practically undisturbed.

1-(m-Methoxyphenyl)-2-(dimethylaminomethyl)-cyclohexan-1-ol (L 201) was split into the cis- and trans-isomers and the conformations of the two isomers were determined by 13C-NMR-spectroscopy. Molecule models showed that both conformeres were similar to the geometrical structure of morphine. The adaptation of the morphine structure was better with the more active trans-isomer than with the cis-isomer. Tramadol, the trans-isomer, was separated into its optical antipodes. When tested for analgesia in the electro-stimulation test with mice, all compounds showed analgetic activity...

Extraction- and measurement methods were developed to compare the incorporation of radioactive metabolites into different cell fractions. Young cells incorporate the labeled compounds in a high rate into the cell material. With increasing age of the culture the incorporation of radioactivity is more directed to riboflavin...

A case is briefly described in which a typical conjunctivitis lignosa appeared after the eye had suffered lime burns. In order to help clarify the morphological connection between mucopolysaccharide production and fiber development in the tumor tissue which occurred after the burn, samples were examined histologically, histochemically and with the use of the electron microscope. The tumor had a cartilage like consistency. Its structure could be devided into three regions. Region A is the pseudo-membrane. It has root like extensions which anchor it to the underlying tissue, and which morphologically appear partially homogeneous and partially fibrous...

Effects of methyl o-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamoyl) reserpate (CD-3400) on the central nervous system in mice, rats and cats were investigated, and a comparison was made with such effects of reserpine and rescinamine. Inhibitory effects of CD-3400 on spontaneous motor activity and conditioned avoidance response were weaker and shorter than those of reserpine and rescinnamine. In the experiments of the inhibitory effects of the central actions such as ptosis, hypothermia, decrease in motor ability, potentiation of hexobarbital and taming, reserpine was found to be the most potent followed by rescinnamine and CD-3400, respectively...
