Luminescent Mn(II)-based organic-inorganic hybrid halides have drawn attention as potential materials for sensing and photonics applications. Here, the synthesis and characterization of methylammonium (MA) manganese bromide ((MA)n Brx Mn(H2 O)2 , (n = 1, 4 and x = 3, 6)) with different stoichiometries of the organic cation and inorganic counterpart, are reported. While the Mn2+ centers have an octahedral conformation, the two coordinating water molecules are found either in cis (1) or in trans (2) positions...

Mercury contamination is a global concern, and the degradation and detoxification of methylmercury have gained significant attention due to its neurotoxicity and biomagnification within the food chain. However, the currently known pathways of abiotic demethylation are limited to light-induced photodegradation process and little is known about light-independent abiotic demethylation of methylmercury. In this study, we reported a novel abiotic pathway for the degradation of methylmercury through the oxidation of both mineral structural iron(II) and surface-adsorbed iron(II) in the absence of light...

Photocatalysis is an effective method with the potential to eliminate pharmaceutical compounds from water sources. Manganese ferrite (MnFeO3 ), a type of multiferroic perovskite catalyst, has attracted significant attention due to its small band gap, however its application was limited due to its high recombination rate and low quantum efficiency. It was therefore aimed to improve the properties of MnFeO3 by doping silver (Ag)-particles. In this study, Ag-MnFeO3 photocatalysts with different Ag content (1-3 mmol%) were synthesized by performing a facile hydrothermal method...

The bromide-chloride mixed quasi-two-dimensional (2D) perovskite, with a natural quantum well structure and tunable exciton binding energy, has gained significant attention for high-performance blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs). However, the relative importance of having a low trap state density or efficient exciton transfer for high-efficiency electroluminescence (EL) performance remains elusive. Here, two molecules with the benzoic acid group, sodium 4-fluorobenzoate (SFB) and 3,5-dibromobenzoic acid (DBA), are used to modulate the phase distribution and trap state to explore the effect between energy transfer and defect passivation...

Periodontitis, a chronic oral disease instigated by bacteria, severely compromises human oral health. The prevailing clinical treatment for periodontitis involves mechanical scraping in conjunction with antibiotics. Phototherapy is employed to rapidly remove the bacteria and achieve periodontitis treatment, effectively circumventing the adverse effects associated with traditional therapies. Constructing 2D/2D van der Waals (VDW) heterojunctions is a key strategy for obtaining excellent photocatalytic activity...

Metal halide perovskites (MHPs) are considered as promising candidates in the application of nonvolatile high-density, low-cost resistive switching (RS) memories and artificial synapses, resulting from their excellent electronic and optoelectronic properties including large light absorption coefficient, fast ion migration, long carrier diffusion length, low trap density, high defect tolerance. Among MHPs, 2D halide perovskites have exotic layered structure and great environment stability as compared with 3D counterparts...

2D van der Waals heterojunctions (vdWH) have emerged as an attractive platform for the realization of optoelectronic synaptic devices, which are critical for energy-efficient computing systems. Photogating induced by charge traps at the interfaces indeed results in ultrahigh responsivity and tunable photoconductance. Yet, optical potentiation and depression remain mostly modulated by gate bias, requiring relatively high energy inputs. Thus, advanced all-optical synapse switching strategies are still needed...

Heparan sulfate (HS) is a glycosaminoglycan, polysaccharides that are considered to have arisen in the last common unicellular ancestor of multicellular animals. In this light, the large interactome of HS and its myriad functions in relation to the regulation of cell communication are not surprising. The binding of proteins to HS determines their localisation and diffusion, essential for embryonic development and homeostasis. Following the biosynthesis of the initial heparosan polymer, the subsequent modifications comprise an established canonical pathway and a minor pathway...

Dirac semimetals have demonstrated significant attraction in the field of optoelectronics due to their unique bandgap structure and high carrier mobility. Combining them with classical semiconductor materials to form heterojunctions enables broadband optoelectronic conversion at room temperature. However, the low light absorption of layered Dirac semimetals substantially limits the device's responsivity in the infrared band. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) heterostructure, composed of silicon nanopillars (SiNPs) and a conformal PtTe2 film, is proposed and demonstrated to enhance the photoresponsivity for uncooled broadband detection...

Mammalian hosts combat bacterial infections through the production of defensive cationic antimicrobial peptides (CAPs). These immune factors are capable of directly killing bacterial invaders; however, many pathogens have evolved resistance evasion mechanisms such as cell surface modification, CAP sequestration, degradation, or efflux.
