To understand the alterations of Rb tumor suppressor gene and the relationship between defects in the Rb and p53 pathways in human esophageal carcinogenesis, we examined the loss of heterozygosity (LOH) of the Rb gene and immunohistochemical staining of pRb protein in 56 esophageal squamous cell carcinoma specimens and related the results to the p53 gene alterations. Using four introgenic polymorphic markers as probes, we observed LOH of the Rb gene in 30 of the 55 informative tumor samples. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed different patterns of pRb expression among the tumor samples...

The authors emphasize the importance of MRI as a means to functionally evaluate patients in primary (PR) and secondary (SR) rhinoseptoplasty. Forty-eight subjects were appraised who underwent various types of corrective nose surgery: 31 PR, 12 SR, 4 introgenic perforations, and 1 dermoid cyst of the nasal dorsum. MRI allows the nasal structures at the level of the valve to be visualized, as well as the medial and lateral walls of the nasal fossa in all of its components. MRI studies improve pre-surgical evaluation (alar cartilages, iaterdomal distance, and valvular configuration), and the exam of structures and anomalies which are hard to evaluate by the rhinoscopy (turbino-septal-synchias, perforations, losses of bone-cartilaginous substance)...

AIM: To introduce a new concept of anterior chamber angle microsurgery, designed to scrape pathologically altered trabecular meshwork from the scleral sulcus as a potential treatment in primary open angle glaucoma. METHODS: Gonioscopically controlled ab interno abrasion of the trabecular meshwork was performed on six human eye banking eyes for morphological analysis. Thereafter, four eyes suffering from terminal glaucomatous optic nerve atrophy as a result of medically uncontrolled intraocular pressure were also treated by 'goniocurettage'...

The purpose of this study was to establish transgenic mouse lines as a tool to investigate the function of amelogenin during mineralization by causing ectopic production of amelogenin and studying its effect. The mouse amelogenin (mAme) was cloned from a 16-day-old whole mouse embryo cDNA library and was determined to be "full-length" mouse amelogenin (with a complete coding region) by comparison with the mouse amelogenin reported previously by Snead et al. (1985) and Lau et al. (1992). The overexpression construct contained: (1) the rat osteocalcin (OC) promoter (1...

Replication-defective adenovirus vectors were generated in which the gene of interest (lacZ, luciferase or HSV-tk) is driven by the adenovirus major late promoter (MLP) or the human cytomegalovirus immediate-early gene promoter/enhancer (CMV). In vitro experiments with rat (II-45) and human (MERO 25) mesothelioma cell lines revealed that the CMV promoter was stronger than the MLP promoter regarding levels of expression of the luciferase reporter gene and ganciclovir (GCV) killing efficiency after tk gene transfer...

Since 1980, we have treated 71 patients with malignant tumors and benign lesions by the Nd-YAG laser. The flexible fiberoptic bronchoscope with the local anesthesia was used for the treatments. Fifty-four cases were malignant tumors and 17 were benign lesions involving trachea and/or hilar bronchus. In malignant tumors, 41 cases were lung cancers, 24 of which were squamous cell carcinomas. Of 17 cases of benign lesions, 10 (58.5%) were introgenic stenoses. Palliative treatments were done for 36 cases of lung cancers, of which 23 died within 1 year after treatments...
