Echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by infection with tiny tapeworms of the genus Echinococcus . Echinococcosis is classified as either cystic echinococcosis or alveolar echinococcosis. The common form is a zoonosis from goats and sheep that tends to cause liver lesions. The larval stage of Echinococcus multilocularis causes alveolar echinococcosis/alveolar hydatid disease. It is a zoonosis with field mice and tundra voles as intermediate and wild carnivores like foxes and wolves as definitive hosts...

Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is considered a significant health concern in developing countries in parts of Asia, Africa, and Central and South America. However, with the increased immigration, it is now becoming increasingly prevalent in the United States. NCC has psychiatric implications often neglected and not recognized in the initial diagnostic workup of patients from developing countries suffering from seizures and psychiatric illnesses, such as depression. This case report aims to signify the presentation of NCC and illustrate the importance of the psychiatric manifestations of NCC in patients...

A 35-year-old man with fever and diarrhea visited our hospital because of white string-like fecal excretion. Based on a morphological examination of the excreted object, a Diphyllobothrium infection was suspected. Additionally, Gram staining of a fecal sample revealed Campylobacter infection. After the intraduodenal administration of meglumine/diatrizoate sodium, the tapeworm was excreted. A polymerase chain reaction-based DNA sequence analysis demonstrated that the tapeworm excreted in this case was Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiensis...

BACKGROUND Cysticercosis is a condition caused by infection with the larval form of Taenia solium, a pork tapeworm that uses pigs as an intermediate host. Humans become infected when they ingest water or food contaminated with tapeworm cysts. Cysticercosis is increasing in frequency in developed countries due to increased access to travel. Neurocysticercosis occurs when Taenia solium cysts embed within the nervous system. The clinical presentation of neurocysticercosis ranges from asymptomatic to life-threatening, largely depending on the brain parenchymal involvement...

The civilizations of ancient Egypt and Nubia played a key role in the cultural development of Africa, the Near East, and the Mediterranean world. This study explores how their location along the River Nile, agricultural practices, the climate, endemic insects and aquatic snails impacted the type of parasites that were most successful in their populations. A meta-analysis approach finds that up to 65% of mummies were positive for schistosomiasis, 40% for headlice, 22% for falciparum malaria, and 10% for visceral leishmaniasis...

Tapeworm infection in horses can cause serious health concerns, and recent data have documented treatment failures in the most common species, Anoplocephala perfoliata. The threat of anthelmintic resistance in A. perfoliata is of particular concern because of poor diagnostic performance of standard egg counting techniques for detecting this parasite. This study compared the performance of three diagnostic techniques 1) Mini-FLOTAC, 2) Cornell-Wisconsin, and 3) Proudman and Edwards used to detect and quantify A...

Cysticercus fasciolaris is a parasitic helminth that usually infects feline and canine mammal hosts. The intermediate hosts (rodents, occasionally lagomorphs, and humans) get infected by the consumption of feed or water contaminated with eggs. Rodents are vectors of disease and reservoirs of various zoonotic parasites. The current survey was aimed at determining endoparasitic helminth infections in rodents in central Morocco. Sampled rodents after specific identification were sacrificed and examined to identify parasitic helminths following ethical guidelines...

A neurocysticercosis-like lesion in an 11-year-old boy in the Netherlands was determined to be caused by the zoonotic Taenia martis tapeworm. Subsequent testing revealed that 15% of wild martens tested in that region were infected with T. martis tapeworms with 100% genetic similarity; thus, the infection source was most likely local.

Lung hydatidosis is a zoonotic infection, primarily caused by Echinococcus sp., and has a significant role in the economy and public health. Canines are the predominant hosts of these parasitic tapeworms. Lungs are the most commonly infected organ after the liver. Hepatic pulmonary blood circulation is mainly reported to transport infection to the lungs. The prevalence of hydatid disease has increased over the past decade. In addition, patients with multi-organ involvement of hydatid cysts have been reported in different parts of the world...

Two adult male Puerto Rican crested anoles ( Anolis cristatellus cristatellus ) housed in a research facility were presented with debilitation and were euthanized. On autopsy, anole 1 had a large cystic white structure in the left pelvic limb, which protruded through the ruptured epidermis, and a large, poorly demarcated swelling in the right caudal abdomen. Anole 2 had masses in the mid-dorsum, caudal dorsum, left pelvic limb, and tail. These masses contained variably sized cestode larvae, which ruptured into the coelomic cavity...

The drug praziquantel (PZQ) has served as the long-standing drug therapy for treatment of infections caused by parasitic flatworms. These encompass diseases caused by parasitic blood, lung, and liver flukes, as well as various tapeworm infections. Despite a history of clinical usage spanning over 4 decades, the parasite target of PZQ has long resisted identification. However, a flatworm transient receptor potential ion channel from the melastatin subfamily (TRPMPZQ) was recently identified as a target for PZQ action...

BACKGROUND: Taeniasis, is a worldwide foodborne zoonotic disease caused by two principal species; Taenia saginata and Taenia solium. The tapeworm infects the intestine causing taeniasis in humans. Taeniasis is a very rare parasitic infection in Palestine with very few annual cases of unknown species. The infection rate and the disease status are not clear due to the lack of reports about the actual number of patients. CASE PRESENTATION: Two Palestinian patients; one male of 22 years old from Hebron and the other is female of 33 years old from Ramallah were referred to Palestinian Health Services in the West Bank, Palestine, complained of weight loss, abdominal pain and presence of motile segments of creamy color in the their stool...

Evidence that the innate immune system can respond with forms of memory upon reinfection has been accumulating over the past few years. These phenomena of "immune priming" in invertebrates, and "trained immunity" in vertebrates, are contrary to previous belief that immune memory and specificity are restricted to the adaptive immune system. However, while trained immunity is usually a response with rather low specificity, immune priming has shown highly specific responses in certain species. To date, it is largely unknown how specificity in innate immune memory can be achieved in response to different parasite types...
