Physiology concepts are often student-perceived as difficult because of low knowledge transfer or background, inability to focus on what is most important, and difficulty visualizing concept elements. Elaboration is a learning science strategy that uses learning-enhanced additions, constructions, or generations to improve mastery of novel material by leveraging the mental cues available for recall and application. Elaboration appears to be especially helpful for neurodivergent students. To connect acid-base balance and disorders to something vivid and memorable, we developed a gnome hat color elaboration that is based on pH indicator strips - where red is acidic, blue is basic, and yellow-green is neutral...

As the competitiveness of orthopaedic surgery residency increases, we sought to determine whether program and Program Director (PD) characteristics influence candidate selection. This novel 19-question survey reviews PDs' opinions and practices in resident selection. Response rate was 31% (63/203). Performance during orthopaedic rotations, United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) scores, and clerkship honors were the top three ranked criteria, with USMLE scores used to screen candidates for interviews (70%) and rotations (43%)...

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has had widespread impact across medical educational sectors, including cancellations and delays of board exams, interruptions in clinical rotations and electives, altered processes for away rotations, and conversion to virtual interviews. These changes, combined with applicant and program uncertainty, may affect the 2021 residency application cycle for competitive fields such as orthopaedic surgery. In consideration of spine trainees and the spine fellow application pipeline, the current study aims to evaluate for deviations in trends found in applications to an orthopaedic surgery residency program from the 2021 cycle compared to six years prior...

CONTEXT: National licensing exams (NLEs) including the Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX) Level 1 evaluate student achievement. Scores have historically been utilized to stratify medical student applicants for residency. Grade point average (GPA), number of practice questions completed, and performance on practice exams have been shown to be predictive of NLE performance. Test anxiety and acute stress have been shown to negatively impact NLE performance. The role of study behaviors and other nonacademic factors in COMLEX Level 1 performance is unknown...

INTRODUCTION: The USMLE Step 1 examination has been used as an objective measure for comparing residency applicants. Recently, the National Board of Medical Examiners and the Federation of State Medical Boards decided that the USMLE Step 1 examination will transition to a pass/fail result starting no earlier than 2022. The purpose of this study was to investigate the perspective of medical students who applied for orthopaedic surgery residency positions during the 2019 to 2020 interview cycle on the USMLE scoring change, and the potential effect this change may result in for future applicants and the residency selection process...

Despite the potential benefits, their utilization in clinical practice is limited, emphasizing the need for new and improved products. Background United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 is a common metric looked at by residency programs to determine invitations for candidates to interview. However, USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) has also been an important factor for selecting applicants to interview and plays a significant role during applicant selection. This study aims to identify academic performance measures that correlate with USMLE Step 2 CK scores and to develop a model to predict USMLE Step 2 CK scores using previous academic measures from the first two cohorts in the longitudinal interleaved clerkship (LInC) at the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (KSOM)...

Near-peer teaching (NPT) is a peer-assisted learning method that has been adopted by medical schools as studies have reported benefits to both tutors and tutees. Published studies suggest students may benefit from NPT programs when preparing for the US Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) Step 1 exam, but they did not use a randomized controlled trial methodology. To determine the impact of a year-long NPT preparation program for the Step 1 examination, we conducted a randomized-controlled trial among second-year medical students at New York Medical College during the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years...

The National Board of Medical Examiners' decision to change Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) from a three-digit score to Pass/Fail (P/F) represents a disruptive change for students, faculty, and leaders in the academic community. In the context of this change, some schools may re-consider the optimal timing of Step 1 as they strive to align their assessment practices with sound educational principles. Currently, over 20 schools administer USMLE Step 1 after the core clerkships...
