Epidermoid inclusion cysts are rare in the oral cavity, accounting for less than 0.01% of cysts found there. These cysts are defined as epidermoid if they contain only epithelial lining, dermoid if skin appendages, and teratoid if they contain other tissues such as muscle, cartilage, and bone. This case report describes a case of a plunging ranula that was later diagnosed as an epidermoid inclusion cyst. The patient is a 22-year-old male who presented with swelling in the floor of the mouth and difficulty eating solid foods for the past 4 months...

Dermoid cysts are benign ectodermal-derived epithelial cysts rarely found on the floor of the neck. They may be congenital or acquired. They comprise three histological variants according to their contents and include dermoid, epidermoid, and teratoma. Epidermoid cysts are lined by epithelium but do not contain skin appendages like hair follicles and sebaceous glands, as seen in dermoid cysts. Teratoma on the other hand contain mesodermal element. They reveal either a supra-myelohyiod or infra-myelohyiod floor-of-mouth location and can be clinically confused with various close differentials including infections, tumours, mucous extravasation phenomena, and embryonic abnormalities...

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Salivary mucoceles, originating from major and minor salivary glands, rarely affect the submandibular gland, accounting for just 0.6 % of its tumors and cysts. With only 18 case reports in the literature to date, their occurrence in this location is infrequent. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient is a 9-year-old male with no relevant medical history who developed progressive submandibular swelling extending into the oral cavity. CT scan confirmed a submandibular gland mucocele...

Epidermoid cyst in the oral cavity is uncommon. It is even more rare to see an epidermoid cyst in the sublingual region. We report the case of a 30-year-old male presenting with a swelling in the floor of the mouth extending into the submental and submandibular regions. The midline swelling was painless, soft, and dome-shaped. CT scan contrast revealed the site and extent of swelling. The complete surgical excision of the lesion was performed via a transcervical approach. Histopathology revealed cystic fibrocollagenous tissue covered by squamous epithelium containing some keratin flakes...

Ankyloglossia is a developmental anomaly characterized by a shortened lingual frenulum, which can range from cases with no clinical relevance to severe cases, where frenectomy may be indicated. In newborns, this indication has increased exponentially. The purpose of this report is to discuss obstruction of the sublingual caruncle, with a recurrent ranula, as a post-surgical complication of laser lingual frenectomy performed in a newborn. The treatment provided is also discussed (marsupialization and removal of the affected sublingual glands)...

A 75-year-old male patient visited Gangneung-Wonju National University Dental Hospital (Gangneung, South Korea) with a 35-mm fluctuant lesion on the floor of the mouth. It was a dome-shaped exophytic lesion with its top on Wharton's duct orifice area. The encapsulated lesion was excised cautiously and the final diagnosis was non-infiltrating angiolipoma. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of an intraoral approach for the treatment of a non-infiltrating angiolipoma on the floor of the mouth in an elderly patient...

Congenital ranula cysts are rare, benign cysts that arise from the obstruction or rupture of the sublingual gland ducts in the oral cavity of newborns. Here, we present a case of a congenital ranula cyst in a newborn, highlighting the clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of this rare condition. The neonate presented with a smooth, painless, and non-tender mass in the floor of the mouth, which was identified as a sublingual cyst via ultrasonography. The neonate underwent successful surgical excision of the cyst, with no complications or recurrence observed during the follow-up period...

INTRODUCTION: Ranula is a limited mucus retention on the floor of mouth. Due to the young age of patients, over the years, attempts were made to find minimally invasive and effective surgical techniques. To date, however, there is still no gold standard. The modified micro-marsupialization is an effective and minimally invasive technique, with minimal risk of relapse, although there are very few reports about it. CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old male presented to our ENT Clinic with a rounded swelling with regular and defined margins, measuring 4x3 cm, soft and painless, non-compressible and bluish...

BACKGROUND: Congenital cystic swellings involving the floor of the mouth include various lesions such as developmental cysts (e.g., dermoid and epidermoid cysts), ranulas, vascular malformations etc. However, coexistence of such conditions, possibly with a cause-and-effect- relationship, is rare. The purpose of this case report is to present a rare case of a congenital epidermoid cyst associated with a mucous retention cyst in a newborn. METHODS: A 6-month-old female infant was referred to an Oral Medicine Clinic in Athens, Greece on October 2019 for evaluation of a swelling at the floor of the mouth, first noticed by her paediatrician just after birth...

Ranulas are cystic lesions located in the floor of the mouth. These are "pseudocysts" and are developed due to an obstruction in the sublingual gland. Congenital variants of plunging ranulas are very rare. Here, we report a case of an eight-year-old male child presenting with congenital swelling with an intraoral component as well as extension to the submandibular gland region. The swelling was painless and gradually growing in size.

A 65-year-old female patient with a history of wearing a denture for 15 years reported with a complaint of pain in the floor of the mouth. On examination, a swelling measuring about 2.2 X1.2 cms was noted in the floor of the mouth on the left side. The lesion was excised under local anesthesia. Histopathology revealed a cystic lesion with basaloid cells arranged in tubules, nests and cribriform pattern. A diagnosis of basal cell adenoma was made and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. We report a rare case of Basal Cell Adenoma of the floor of the mouth which mimicked a ranula...

BACKGROUND: Plunging ranula is a variant of ranula, which present as a painless subcutaneous anterolateral neck mass and is located beyond the mylohyoid muscle. These swelling presentations with no intraoral component are extremely rare and rarely provide a diagnostic challenge. CASE REPORT: An elderly male presented with painless neck mass in the cervical region for three months. The mass was excised, and the patient was doing well on follow-up. We report a case of recurrent plunging ranula without any intraoral component...

Ranula is a rare and benign extravasation mucocele that is clinically characterized by asymptomatic sublingual or submandibular masses. Surgical excision is considered the most effective treatment approach, but it has been associated with high invasiveness and several complications (hemorrhage, damage to Wharton's duct, and lingual nerve injury). Over the past decade, more conservative therapies have been rapidly disseminated into clinical practice to seek a more effective and less traumatic approach for young patients...

PURPOSE: To develop sonographic criteria for ranula that to allow rapid and precise diagnosis, differentiation between enoral (ER) and plunging ranula (PR), and differential diagnosis from other competing pathologies in this region. METHODS: Patients who presented with or were referred with ranula between 2002 and 2022 were assessed in a retrospective study. After clinical investigation, ultrasound examinations were performed in all cases. Several sonographic parameters describing the echotexture, shape and size of ranulas, their relationship to important surrounding anatomical landmarks and the characteristic spreading pattern of ERs and PRs were elaborated and evaluated...

We report a rare case of epignathus (oropharyngeal teratoma) in a neonate, who presented with a midline mass covered with skin and multiple hairs protruding from the Palate and associated with bifid tongue and ranula. With the characteristic presentation, diagnosis of oro/oropharyngeal teratoma was made and a massive internet search revealed very few reported cases of "epignathus". It is unfortunate that the survival of such neonates is only moderate. Prenatal scans and follow up in an institution can prepare the multidisciplinary team to save the child...

Childhood diseases are a continuous source of interest in all areas of general and dental medicine. Congenital, developmental, and hereditary diseases may either be present upon birth or appear in early childhood. Developmental anomalies, although often asymptomatic, may become grounds for different infections. Furthermore, they can indicate certain systemic disorders. Childhood age frequently brings about benign tumors and different types of traumatic lesions to the oral mucosa. Traumatic lesions can be caused by chemical, mechanical, or thermal injury...

BACKGROUND: Lymphoceles can result from disruption of lymphatic vessels after surgical procedures in areas with extensive lymphatic networks. Percutaneous catheter drainage with sclerotherapy can be performed for the treatment of lymphoceles. OK-432 has been used to treat benign cysts, such as lymphangioma and ranula. Therefore, we aimed to report the efficacy and safety of sclerotherapy using OK-432 for postoperative lymphoceles. This study retrospectively analyzed 16 patients who underwent sclerotherapy using OK-432 for postoperative pelvic and para-aortic lymphoceles between April 1, 2012, and March 31, 2020...
