Furan is generated in a wide array of heat-treated foods through thermal degradation, leading to severe impairments in the male reproductive system. The main objective of this study was to investigate the potential of pomegranate peel extract (PGPE) in mitigating testicular dysfunctions induced by furan. Male rats were categorized into four groups: control/untreated, PGPE, furan, and PGPE+furan group. The study results revealed that furan-treated rats exhibited significantly elevated aminotransferase and phosphatase activity, and also generated increased oxidative stress, and reduced antioxidative stress protein activity...

The current work is related to the numerical investigation of non-Fourier heat transfer inside the short-pulsed laser-irradiated axisymmetric soft tissue phantom. It utilizes the modified discrete ordinate method to solve the transient radiative transfer equation (TRTE) for determining the intensity field. The laser energy absorbed by the soft tissue phantom behaves like a source in the Fourier/non-Fourier heat conduction model based-bio-heat transfer equation (BHTE), which is solved by employing the finite volume method (FVM) to determine the temperature distribution...

Herein, a new magnetic nanobiocomposite based on a synthesized cross-linked pectin-cellulose hydrogel (cross-linked Pec-Cel hydrogel) substrate was designed and synthesized. The formation of the cross-linked Pec-Cel hydrogel with a calcium chloride agent and its magnetization process caused a new and efficient magnetic nanobiocomposite. Several spectral and analytical techniques, including FTIR, SEM, VSM, TGA, XRD, and EDX analyses, were performed to confirm and characterize the structural features of the magnetic cross-linked pectin-cellulose hydrogel nanobiocomposite (magnetic cross-linked Pec-Cel hydrogel nanobiocomposite)...

The purpose of this study was to systematically examine three different surgical approaches in treating left medial temporal lobe epilepsy (mTLE) (viz., subtemporal selective amygdalohippocampectomy [subSAH], stereotactic laser amygdalohippocampotomy [SLAH], and anterior temporal lobectomy [ATL]), to determine which procedures are most favorable in terms of visual confrontation naming and seizure relief outcome. This was a retrospective study of 33 adults with intractable mTLE who underwent left temporal lobe surgery at three different epilepsy surgery centers who also underwent pre-, and at least 6-month post-surgical neuropsychological testing...

Fibromyalgia is a potentially disabling idiopathic disease characterized by widespread chronic pain associated with comorbidities such as fatigue, anxiety, and depression. Current therapeutic approaches present adverse effects that limit adherence to therapy. Diosmetin, an aglycone of the flavonoid glycoside diosmin found in citrus fruits and the leaves of Olea europaea L., has antinociceptive, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. Here, we investigated the effect of diosmetin on nociceptive behaviors and comorbidities in an experimental fibromyalgia model induced by reserpine in mice...

BACKGROUND: Water vapor thermal therapy (Rezum) is a minimally invasive treatment for benign prostatic enlargement (BPE). Studies reporting urodynamic results regarding the procedure are rare. Our study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Rezum on urinary outcome parameters in a consecutive series of patients and compare urodynamic data before and after treatment. METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated all the patients treated with Rezum between 07/2017 and 12/2023 at our institution...

INTRODUCTION: Laser and radiofrequency ablation are two thermal ablation methods currently widely used to treat lower limb venous insufficiency. However, very few studies have been conducted on the use of microwaves, a form of thermal ablation, for the treatment of small saphenous vein (SSV) insufficiency. This study aimed to examine the efficacy and safety of endovenous microwave ablation (EMA) for the treatment of SSV insufficiency. METHODS: The clinical data of 126 patients (126 lower limbs) with SSV insufficiency (SSV trunk reflux time ≥ 500 ms on lower limb color Doppler ultrasound) treated at the Surgery Department of The Sixth People's Hospital of Zhuji from January 2020 to June 2022 were analyzed retrospectively; 64 patients underwent EMA and 62 underwent endovenous laser ablation (EVLA)...

Cervical carcinoma persists as a major global public health burden. While conventional therapeutic modalities inevitably cause ablation of adjacent non-tumorous tissues, photodynamic therapy (PDT) offers a targeted cytotoxic strategy through a photosensitizing agent (PS). However, the hydrophobicity and lack of selective accumulation of promising PS compounds such as zinc(II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) impedes their clinical translation as standalone agents. The present study sought to incorporate ZnPc within double-layer hollow mesoporous silica nanoparticles (DHMSN) as nanocarriers to enhance aqueous dispersibility and tumor specificity...

Cancer immunotherapy has recently transformed the traditional approaches against various cancer malignancies. Immunotherapy includes systemic and local treatments to enhance immune responses against cancer; and involves strategies such as immune checkpoints, cancer vaccines, immune modulatory agents, mimetic antigen-presenting cells, and adoptive cell therapy. Despite promising results, these approaches still suffer from several limitations including a lack of precise delivery of immune-modulatory agents to the target cells, off-target toxicity, among others that can be overcome using nanotechnology...

"Transition" metal-coordinated plant polyphenols are a type of promising antitumor nanodrugs owing to their high biosafety and catalytic therapy potency; however, the major obstacle restricting their clinical application is their poor tumor accumulation. Herein, Fe-doped ZIF-8 was tailored using tannic acid (TA) into a hollow mesoporous nanocarrier for gallic acid (GA) loading. After hyaluronic acid (HA) modification, the developed nanosystem of HFZIF-8/GA@HA was used for the targeted delivery of Fe ions and GA, thereby intratumorally achieving the synthesis of an Fe-GA coordinated complex...

BACKGROUND: Prospective randomized trials in severely burned children have shown the positive effects of oxandrolone (OX), beta blockers (BB) and a combination of the two (BBOX) on hypermetabolism, catabolism and hyperinflammation short- and long-term post-burn. Although data on severely burned adults are lacking in comparison, BB, OX and BBOX appear to be commonly employed in this patient population. In this study, we perform a secondary analysis of an international prospective randomized trial dataset to provide descriptive evidence regarding the current utilization patterns and potential treatment effects of OX, BB and BBOX...

Considering these factors is essential for improving the temperature prediction accuracy...

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) require a high level of purity for regulatory approval and safe administration. High-molecular weight (HMW) species are a common impurity associated with mAb therapies. Hydrophobic interaction chromatography (HIC) resins are often used to remove these HMW impurities. Determination of a suitable HIC resin can be a time and resource-intensive process. In this study, we modeled the chromatographic behavior of seven mAbs across 13 HIC resins using measurements of surface hydrophobicity, surface charge, and thermal stability for mAbs, and hydrophobicity and zeta-potential for HIC resins with high fit quality (adjusted R2  > 0...
