BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Regional analgesia is effective for post-thoracotomy pain. The primary objective of the study is to compare the intraoperative requirement of isoflurane and fentanyl between general anaesthesia (GA) with epidural analgesia and GA with paravertebral analgesia. METHODS AND MATERIAL: A prospective observational comparative study was conducted on 56 patients undergoing open thoracotomy procedures. The patients were divided into two groups of 28 by assigning the study participants alternatively to each group: Group GAE - received thoracic epidural catheterization with GA, and Group GAP - received ultrasound guided thoracic paravertebral catheterization on the operative side with GA...

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of including soybean molasses (SM) on performance, blood parameters, carcass traits, meat quality, fatty acid and muscle (longissimus thoracis) transcriptomic profiles of castrated lambs. Twenty Dorper × Santa Inês lambs (20.06 ± 0.76 kg BW) were assigned to a randomized block design, stratified by BW, with the following treatments: CON - 0 g/kg of SM and SM20 - 200 g/kg of SM on DM basis, allocated in individual pens. The diet consisted of 840 g/kg concentrate and 160 g/kg corn silage for 76 days, with the first 12 days as an adaptation period and the remaining 64 days on the finishing diet...

This paper studies the control problem for a continuous-time networked system with non-linearity in the state equation as well as in the input, as saturation. The system is considered under denial-of-service (DoS), attacks which cause the blockage of input and/or output components in the overall closed-loop model. An event-triggering scheme that is resilient in nature, along with an observer-based control, has been considered under DoS attacks. The resultant scheme ensures efficient network resources and excludes Zeno behavior naturally due to the presence of a minimum positive interevent delay...

The obligate intracellular bacterium, Chlamydia trachomatis, has evolved to depend on its human host for many metabolites, including most amino acids and three of the four nucleotides. In view of this, it is not surprising that depletion of a single amino acid in the host cell growth medium blocks chlamydial replication. Paradoxically, supra-normal levels of some amino acids also block productive replication of Chlamydia. Here, we have determined how elevated serine levels, generated by exogenous supplementation, impede chlamydial inclusion development and reduce the generation of infectious progeny...

BACKGROUND: Orofacial clefts are the most common congenital abnormalities. Cleft lip reconstruction is performed mostly in 3 months of life including the neonatal period. The consumption of opioids during anesthesia is one of the monitored parameters of anesthesia safety. We investigated the effect of using an infraorbital nerve block for reducing opioid consumption during cleft lip surgery in neonates. PATIENTS/METHODS: Overall, 100 patients who underwent primary cleft lip surgery in neonatal age between 2018 and 2021 were included in the study...

Converting CO2 to synthetic hydrocarbon fuels is of increasing interest. In light of progress in electrified CO2 to ethylene, we explored routes to dimerize to 1-butene, an olefin that can serve as a building block to ethylene longer-chain alkanes. With goal of selective and active dimerization, we investigate a series of metal-organic frameworks having bimetallic catalytic sites. We find that the tunable pore structure enables optimization of selectivity and that periodic pore channels enhance activity. In a tandem system for the conversion of CO2 to 1-C4 H8 , wherein the outlet cathodic gas from a CO2 -to-C2 H4 electrolyzer is fed directly (via a dehumidification stage) into the C2 H4 dimerizer, we study the highest-performing MOF found herein: M' = Ru and M″ = Ni in the bimetallic two-dimensional M'2 (OAc)4 M″(CN)4 MOF...

Patients undergoing chemotherapy with cisplatin commonly present gastrointestinal effects such as constipation and gastric emptying (GE) delay. Both the purinergic system and physical exercise modulate the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In the current study, we investigated the role of ATP, physical exercise, and P2X7 receptor blocking on GE delay induced by cisplatin in rats. Male rats were divided into the following groups: control (C), cisplatin (Cis), exercise (Ex), Brilliant Blue G (BBG), ATP, Cis+Ex, Cis+ATP, Cis+BBG, Cis+Ex+BBG, Cis+Ex+BBG+ATP, and Cis+ATP+BBG...

Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterials have garnered considerable attention due to their capacity to achieve negative parameters, significantly influencing the integration of natural materials with artificially structural media. The emergence of carbon aerogels (CAs) offers an opportunity to create lightweight EM metamaterials, notable for their promising EM shielding or absorption effects. This paper introduces an efficient, low-cost method for fabricating CAs without requiring stringent drying conditions. By finely tuning the ZnCl2 /lignin ratio, the porosity is controlled in CAs...

Rimsulfuron is a sulfonylurea herbicide that controls grass and broadleaf weeds in maize, potatoes, fruits, nuts, and other crops. It can also be used as a burndown herbicide to clear invasive weed species along roadsides and other nonagricultural land. Rimsulfuron acts as an acetolactase synthase (ALS) inhibitor, blocking the synthesis of essential amino acids required for plant growth. As is common practice, rimsulfuron has been subject to periodic reviews by regulatory agencies for reregistration since its introduction into the market in the early 1990s...
