INTRODUCTION: Acute appendicitis is traditionally a clinical diagnosis where there are a range of diagnostic accuracies reported. The role of ultrasound is to improve specificity and decrease negative appendicectomy rate. It is a simple, non-invasive, easily available technique. The purpose of this study is to determine the diagnostic accuracy of an ultrasound in combination with total leukocyte count, neutrophil percentage and C-reactive protein in diagnosing acute appendicitis. METHODS: This study includes consecutive sampling of suspected patients from January 2021 to February 2022 with the approval of the ethical and research committee...

Claw lesions in dairy cows contribute significantly to lameness, causing distress and discomfort for affected cows and raising welfare concerns. Despite increased awareness, lameness incidence continues to rise. Defining and recording claw traits are particularly problematic. In South Africa (SA), claw data is limited to paper-based records kept by private hoof trimmers. This research analysed claw-trimming data from five dairy farms over 6 years to examine the occurrence and recording of claw lesions in SA Holstein cattle...

In the management of the non-specific purulent inflammation of the cervical lymph nodes in children, not only surgical treatment to evacuate the available pus but also antibacterial therapy is mandatory. Knowledge of the spectrum of the bacterial causative agents of this disease is of fundamental importance for it. This retrospective study included 66 patients with purulent inflammation of the cervical lymph nodes with a mean age of 5.79 years, ranging from 29 days to 17 years, who were hospitalized for the period 2015-2022 in the three pediatric clinics at the St...

The guidelines on calculated parenteral initial treatment of bacterial infections in adults from 2018 were the first German language S2k guidelines for these infections. This article summarizes the experiences with respect to their practicality in the clinical routine and the resulting supplementations and comments. In view of the many different terms for soft tissue infections, the guidelines had to first establish some definitions and diagnostic criteria. Among others, the guidelines introduced the provisional term limited phlegmons (phlegmons are usually termed cellulitis in Angloamerican literature) for the frequent initially superficial soft tissue infections with Staphylococcus aureus, which do not always extend to the fascia, in order to differentiate them from erysipelas caused by Streptoccocus, which in contrast to phlegmons always respond to penicillin...

BACKGROUND: Complicated appendicitis (appendicitis with abscess, perforation, or generalized peritonitis) poses a significant burden on healthcare systems, with incidence up to 28-29%. Current management options include antibiotic therapy and up-front surgery, antibiotic therapy and percutaneous drainage, or antibiotic therapy alone. There is no consensus on treatment guidelines in current literature. This study aims to better define treatment algorithms for patients presenting with acute complicated appendicitis by evaluating clinical outcomes in those treated with or without surgery...

Background: Amyand's hernia (AH) is a rare type of inguinal hernia, containing the appendix in the hernia sac irrespective of the presence of appendicitis. Appendiceal mucocele represents a dilation of the appendix with an accumulation of mucinous material and could be either a benign or a malignant process. Herein we report an exceptionally rare case of a perforated appendiceal mucocele within an AH. Case report: A 77-year-old male patient, underwent surgery for right incarcerated inguinoscrotal hernia. He was found to have a perforated, phlegmonous, and dilated appendix dislocated from the caecum, with peri-appendicular purulent content with fibrin deposits within the hernia sac...

This study was aimed at reviewing the clinical presentations, the management and outcomes in children with inflamed and phlegmonous appendicitis with reference to the operative findings. METHODS: The records of 211 children 5 to 15 years of age who were operated for acute appendicitis with intra operative findings of inflamed or phlegmonous appendicitis who met inclusion criteria were entered and analyzed using SPSS (IBM) V...

MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed treatment outcomes in 111 patients with septic diseases of the hand (septic arthritis, tendovaginitis, phlegmon). Surgical treatment was finished by primary sutures and drainage. They were divided into two groups. Bacteriophages were used in the main group. Other components of treatment were identical. «Pyobacteriophage complex» was injected into drainage tubes during dressings...

Prostate abscess is a rare complication of prostatitis, typically observed in patients with conditions such as immunodeficiency, diabetes, urinary tract abnormalities, and chronic indwelling catheters. Gram-negative bacteria such as Enterobacteriaceae are the most commonly detected organisms in prostate abscesses. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections are rarely reported. The unique aspect of our case involves MRSA bacteria, further complicated by an MRSA prostate abscess, in a 61-year-old immunocompetent male...

The standard therapy for BCC is surgical tumor excision which is generally a low-risk procedure. One of the life-threatening surgical risks and complications when removing BCC in the facial area is infection with the possibility to spread across the deep neck spaces as well as systemic inflammation (sepsis). Acute phlegmonous esophagitis is a rare life-threatening disease that often requires surgical intervention in case of complications, including esophageal abscess, perforation, or mediastinitis. An 89-year-old woman was admitted to the emergency department with painful swallowing and respiratory distress. She was diagnosed with acute phlegmonous esophagitis and a hypopharyngeal abscess based on computed tomography (CT) findings...

Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (MRONJ) is a challenging situation in clinics. Previous studies have shown that pentoxifylline combined with tocopherol proved to be beneficial in patients with osteoradionecrosis, due to their antioxidant and antifibrotic properties. The aim of this randomized study was to evaluate the effect of pentoxifylline and tocopherol in patients that had developed MRONJ after tooth extractions. The study population consisted of 202 Stage I MRONJ female patients with an average age of 66...

BACKGROUND: The vast majority of patients with acute tonsillitis (AT) are managed in general practice. However, occasionally patients are referred to hospital for specialized management because of aggravated symptoms and/or findings suggestive of peritonsillar involvement. No prospective studies have been conducted aiming to investigate the prevalent and significant microorganisms in this highly selected group of patients. We aimed to describe the microbiological findings of acute tonsillitis with or without peritonsillar phlegmon (PP) in patients referred for hospital treatment and to point out potential pathogens using the following principles to suggest pathogenic significance: (1) higher prevalence in patients compared to healthy controls, (2) higher abundance in patients compared to controls, and (3) higher prevalence at time of infection compared to time of follow up...
