Elemental analysis (EA) coupled to isotope ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) is a well-established method to derive stable isotope ratios of sulfur (34 S/32 S). Conversion of sulfur to SO2 by EA and measurement of SO2 isotopologues by IRMS represents the simplest and most versatile method to accomplish isotope measurement of sulfur even in bulk samples. Yet, interferences by oxygen isotopes in SO2 often impair the precision and trueness of measured results. In the current study, we coupled EA to multicollector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICPMS) to establish a method that avoids such interferences due to direct measurement of S+ ions...

Hydrogen, highly valued for its pristine cleanliness and remarkable efficiency as an emerging energy source, is anticipated to ascend to a preeminent status within the forthcoming energy landscape. Electrocatalytic water splitting is considered a pivotal, eco-friendly, and sustainable strategy for hydrogen production. The substantial energy consumption stemming from oxygen evolution side reactions significantly impedes the commercial viability of water electrolysis. Consequently, the pursuit of a cost-effective and efficacious oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalyst stands as an imperative strategy for realizing hydrogen production via water electrolysis...

The analytical capabilities of a nitrogen-sustained high-power microwave inductively coupled atmospheric-pressure plasma mass spectrometer (N2 MICAP-MS) were investigated using solution nebulization with and without aerosol desolvation. The reduced solvent load for the desolvated aerosol and the increased aerosol transfer resulted in a signal enhancement of ten times for most elements in samples without a significant amount of dissolved solids. An exception was boron, whose signal decreased by a factor of seven when a desolvator was used...

Cinnamomum tamala , commonly known as "Indian bay leaf" or "Tejpat", is an economically important plant widely used in medicine, food and cosmetic industries. Growing demand for its leaf and bark in the herbal trade and non-availability of quality materials lead to large-scale species admixture and adulteration in the global market. The present study aims at developing a validated HPLC-DAD (High-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection) method and multiple markers-based chemical fingerprints for quality evaluation of C...

Cyclooctane is classified as a cycloalkane, characterized by the chemical formula C 8 H 16 . It consists of a closed ring structure composed of eight carbon atoms and sixteen hydrogen atoms. A cyclooctane chain typically refers to a series of cyclooctane molecules linked together. Cyclooctane and its derivatives find various applications in chemistry, materials science, and industry. Topological indices are numerical values associated with the molecular graph of a chemical compound, predicting certain physical or chemical properties...

A method based on gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) coupled with one-step QuEChERS technique was developed for the simultaneous determination of 15 N -nitrosamines in air-dried yak meat. The hydration volume, extraction solvent, extracting salt, and cleaning material were optimized according to the characteristics of the N -nitrosamines and sample matrix. BACKGROUND: Inhalation of biopersistent fibers like asbestos can cause strong chronic inflammatory effects, often resulting in fibrosis or even cancer. The interplay between fiber shape, fiber size and the resulting biological effects is still poorly understood due to the lack of reference materials. RESULTS: We investigated how length, diameter, aspect ratio, and shape of synthetic silica fibers influence inflammatory effects at doses up to 250 µg cm-2 . Silica nanofibers were prepared with different diameter and shape...

Atherosclerosis (AS), a pathological cause of cardiovascular disease, results from endothelial injury, local progressive inflammation, and excessive lipid accumulation. AS plaques rich in foam cells are prone to rupture and form thrombus, which can cause life-threatening complications. Therefore, the assessment of atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability and early intervention are crucial in reducing the mortality rates associated with cardiovascular disease. In this work, A fluorescent probe FC-TPA was synthesized, which switches the fluorescence state between protonated and non-protonated, reducing background fluorescence and enhancing signal-to-noise ratio...

Salinity gradient energy, often referred to as the Gibbs free energy difference between saltwater and freshwater, is recognized as "blue energy" due to its inherent cleanliness, renewability, and continuous availability. Reverse electrodialysis (RED), relying on ion-selective membranes, stands as one of the most prevalent and promising methods for harnessing salinity gradient energy to generate electricity. Nevertheless, conventional RED membranes face challenges such as insufficient ion selectivity and transport rates and the difficulty of achieving the minimum commercial energy density threshold of 5 W/m2 ...

This study presents a new approach to determining the preload force of bolted joints. The concept involves measuring the torsional angle without contact. For this purpose, we present a circular magnetic sensor array integrated into the torque wrench. The torsional angle in bolted joints depends on the dimensions of the screw and the materials used and is typically less than four degrees. For this reason, one requirement is a high angular resolution so that a continuous recording of the torsion angle is feasible during the assembly process...

By controlling the design of the electrodes, voltage, and frequency, the operating range and speed of the DEA can be adjusted. These DEAs find applications in biomimetic robots, artificial muscles, and similar fields. When voltage is applied to the DEA, the dielectric layer undergoes compression and expansion due to electrostatic forces, which can lead to electrical breakdown. This phenomenon is closely related to the performance and lifespan of the DEA...

It can also produce interactions between cells and material surfaces through selective protein adsorption and has therefore always been a research hotspot in orthopedic materials. The main result of this was the introduction of amino groups into phenolic hydroxyl groups in the hydrolyzing lignin from the raw lignin materials, thus generating the product of aminated lignin...
