Osteomyelitis in adolescents is a serious disease with the potential for lifelong disability. The key to successful management is early diagnosis, including bone sampling for microbiological and pathological examination to allow targeted and long-lasting antibiotic therapy. Staphylococcus aureus is the most frequently isolated microorganism in these patients. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) is usually considered a nosocomial pathogen, but increasingly it is acquired in the community. We present a case of acute osteomyelitis caused by community-associated MRSA (CA-MRSA) who had never been hospitalized and had no other known risk factors for MRSA...

BACKGROUND: Incorrect use of antibiotics is a major public health concern both nationally and globally due to the development of antibiotic resistance. The goal of this study was to see if prescription of antibiotics for urinary tract infections in general practice was in accordance with national guidelines. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We combined two sets of data from February and March 2003: prescriptions of antibiotics redeemed in pharmacies, and electronic billing cards collected from the National Insurance Agency from 145 general practitioners in Vestfold county...

A total of 656 female patients from Russia aged between 18 to 65 years with uncomplicated cystitis entered the international ARESC trial, of them 647 were eligible for final analysis. Positive cultural urine tests ( > 10(4) CFU/ml) were in 419 (64.7%) patients, 393 (93.8%) patients had monoinfection. The central laboratory of Genoa (to which the isolated samples were sent) has tested 416 uropathogens from 399 patients. The following pathogens were isolated: E. coli (72.6%), enterococcus (7.0%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (4...

Analysis of the antibioticograms of the Vibrio cholerae non-01/non-0139 strains showed that in the cultures isolated in the Rostov Region in 1968--1975 there were present markers of resistance to ampicillin (7%), kanamycin (15.8%), rifampicin (3.5%) and trimetoprim/sulfamethoxazole (14%). Among the strains isolated in the Ukraine in 1975 14% was resistant to ampicillin. More than a half of the strains isolated in Uzbekistan in 1990 and 2000-2001, in the Arkhangelsk Region in 1999-2000 and in the Kalmykia in 1999-2005 was antibiotic resistant...

BACKGROUND: In the rather rare urinary pathogen Proteus mirabilis resistance to antibiotics and ability to form biofilm were studied. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The strains Proteus mirabilis were isolated from urine samples from ambulatory and hospitalized patients diagnosed with urinary tract infection (UTI) between April 2008 and April 2010. Resistance to antibiotics was investigated using a disk diffusion antimicrobial susceptibility test. Biofilm formation was demonstrated by modified Christensen method...

Escherichia coli and the antimicrobial pressure exerted on this microorganism can be modulated by factors dependent on the host. In this paper, we describe the distribution of antimicrobial resistance to amikacin, tobramycin, ampicillin, amoxicillin clavulanate, cefuroxime, cefoxitin, cefotaxime, imipenem, ciprofloxacin, fosfomycin, nitrofurantoin, and trimetoprim-sulfametoxazole in more than 100,000 E. coli isolates according to culture site and patient age, gender, and location. Bayesian inference was planned in all statistical analysis, and Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation was employed to estimate the model parameters...

The chronic granulomatous disease is a primary immunodeficiency with a defect of the phagocytosis process; its main alteration resides in the incapacity of the NADPH oxidase system to produce reactive oxygen species capable of destruct pathogenic organisms such as bacteria, fungus and mycobacteria. Patients are susceptible to severe and mild infections, mainly pneumonias, linfadenitis and gastroenteritis that tend to be repetitive; in addition, they presented granulomatous inflammation and autoimmunity. We presented the case of two brothers with X-linked chronic granulomatous disease with alteration in the sub-unit gp91Phox; heredofamilial background was endogamy and consanguinity...

The objective of this research work would be to analyze inpatient's and outpatient's antimicrobial resistance to a set of various agents. The patients have been medically treated in the region of Ze-do canton since 2005 until today. Total number of 164 patients was included in our research. Regarding the place of medical treatment, our patients were divided into two groups: a total number of 111 inpatients and a total number of 53 outpatients...

Ophthalmic examination revealed a 3-4 mm diameter corneal ulcer with faint edema at the lesion edge, and a raised grayish area on the paraxial cornea near the 2 o'clock position. Cytological testing revealed fungal hyphae and extracellular cocci. Culture of the lesion found heavy growth of Enterococcus faecalis and Curvularia spp...

Staphylococcal infections are the major causes of morbidity in haemodialysis patients. The source of the staphylococci is the anterior nares. Elimination of nasal carriage of staphylococci could result in a remarkable decrease in the infection rate. The aim of this study was to investigate if there was a difference in the bacterial flora between the nasal vestibule and cavity as well as their antibiotic susceptibility in haemodialysis. Swab samples obtained from 35 haemodialysis patients were subjected to conventional microbiological methods...

Vibrio harveyi is the major causal organism of vibriosis, causing potential devastation to diverse ranges of marine invertebrates over a wide geographical area. These microorganisms, however, are phenotypically diverse, and many of the isolates are also resistant to multiple antibiotics. In a previous study, we described a previously unknown association between Vibrio sp. AO1, a luminous bacterium related to the species V. harveyi, and the benthic hydrozoan Aglaophenia octodonta. In this study, we analyzed the susceptibility to antibiotics (ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, or co-trimoxazole = mix of sulfamethoxazole and trimetoprim) of Vibrio sp...

Whipple's disease is an infrequent multisystemic infection caused by a gram-positive bacterium: Tropheryma whippelii, which after several studies has been characterized as an actinomiceto por 16Sr RNA. It occurs with multiple symptoms, the principal of which are diarrhea, weight loss, stomach pain and arthralgias. Arthritis or artralgia may appear as an isolated symptom and eventually through the years additional digestive, cardiovascular and/or neurological symptoms arise. Diverse immunological abnormalities usually present before or after clinical symptoms are first discovered...

1. The kidneys are the key organs to maintain the balance of the different electrolytes in the body and the acid-base balance. Progressive loss of kidney function results in a number of adaptive and compensatory renal and extrarenal changes that allow homeostasis to be maintained with glomerular filtration rates in the range of 10-25 ml/min. With glomerular filtration rates below 10 ml/min, there are almost always abnormalites in the body's internal environment with clinical repercussions. 2. Water Balance Disorders: In advanced chronic kidney disease (CKD), the range of urine osmolality progressively approaches plasma osmolality and becomes isostenuric...

Antimicrobial resistance of Escherichia coil isolated from pigs in Argentina. Sixty-nine Escherichia coli isolates from healthy pigs or with clinical signs non-compatible with diarrhea caused by this microorganism, were studied. The purpose was to determine the resistance profile against antimicrobials frequently used in veterinary and human medicine. The agar diffusion method was used. High resistance percentages against antimicrobials used in swine farms such as ampicillin, streptomycin and tetracycline were observed, as well as against trimetoprim-sulfametoxazole and chloramphenicol, compounds that were stopped being used several years ago...
