AIM: To compare effectiveness of dapagliflozin versus DPP-4 inhibitors on individualized HbA1c targets and extra-glycaemic endpoints among elderly patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D). METHODS: This was a multicentre retrospective study on patients aged 70-80 years with HbA1c above individualized target and starting dapagliflozin or DPP-4 inhibitors in 2015-2017. The primary outcome was the proportion reaching individualized HbA1c targets. Confounding by indication was addressed by inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW), multivariable adjustment (MVA), or propensity score matching (PSM)...

The microalga Arthrospira platensis BEA 005B was produced using 80 m2 (9 m3 ) raceway photobioreactors achieving a biomass productivity of 28.2 g·m-2 ·day-1 when operating the reactors in semi-continuous mode (0.33 day-1 ). The produced biomass was rich in proteins (58.1 g·100 g-1 ) and carbohydrates (25.6 g·100 g-1 ); the content of phycocyanins and allophycocyanins was 115.4 and 36.9 mg·g-1 , respectively. Ultrasounds and high-pressure homogenisation allowed recovering approximately 90% of the initial protein content of the biomass; however, the energetic requirements of the former (∼100 kJ·kg-1 ) were significantly lower than those of high-pressure homogenisation (∼200 kJ·kg-1 )...

The sugarcane processing industry generates a large amount of straw, which has a negative environmental impact, and high costs are associated with their elimination, wasting their potential bioactive value attributed to their richness in polyphenols. In this study, an ethanolic extract produced from sugarcane straw was screened for its phenolic compounds content, and the potential use of this extract in the development of a food ingredient was further evaluated. Fifty different secondary metabolites belonging to the hydroxybenzoic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, and flavonoids were identified by liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-ultrahigh-resolution-quadrupole time of flight-mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-UHR-QqTOF-MS)...

In this work, a 2 H -pyran-2-one-functionalized diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) (coded as receptor 1 ) was designed, synthesized, and fully characterized by various spectroscopic methods. The physical properties of molecular architecture 1 were studied employing theoretical calculations. Receptor 1 was elegantly scrutinized for the sensing of explosive nitroaromatic compounds (NACs). Receptor 1 exhibited detection of nitro explosives, i.e., picric acid (PA), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and nitrophenol (NP), via the fluorescence quenching mechanism...

Genome-wide significant loci for metformin response in type 2 diabetes reported elsewhere have not replicated in the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). To assess pharmacogenetic interactions in pre-diabetes, we conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) in the DPP. Cox proportional hazards models tested associations with diabetes incidence in metformin (MET, n=876) and placebo (PBO, n=887) arms. Multiple linear regression assessed association with one-year change in metformin-related quantitative traits, adjusted for baseline trait, age, sex, and 10 ancestry principal components...

Three new Pt(II) complexes [(dpp-DAD)PtCl2 ] ( I ), [(Mes-DAD(Me)2 )PtCl2 ] ( II ) and [(dpp-DAD(Me)2 )PtCl2 ] ( III ) were synthesized by the direct reaction of [(CH3 CN)2 PtCl2 ] and corresponding redox-active 1,4-diaza-1,3-butadienes (DAD). The compounds were isolated in a single crystal form and their molecular structures were determined by X-ray diffraction. This study aimed to assess the current practice in the use of SGLT2-I's in general medical units at a large metropolitan health service. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is recognized as a serious public health concern with increasing incidence. The dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor sitagliptin has been used for the treatment of T2DM worldwide. Although sitagliptin has excellent therapeutic outcome, adverse effects are observed. In addition, previous studies have suggested that sitagliptin may have pleiotropic effects other than treating T2DM. These pieces of evidence point to the importance of further investigation of the molecular mechanisms of sitagliptin, starting from the identification of sitagliptin-binding proteins...

Some early reports in the medical literature have raised concern about a possible increased risk of pancreatic cancer associated with the use of two broad classes of incretin-based therapies, dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors (DPP-4Is) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs). This possibility has been somewhat mitigated by the null findings meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), but the usefulness of their findings was hampered by serious shortcomings of lack of power and representativeness...

Agri-food industry wastes and by-products include highly valuable components that can upgraded, providing low-cost bioactives or used as an alternative protein source. In this context, by-products from olive production and olive oil extraction process, i.e., seeds, can be fostered. In particular, this work was aimed at extracting and characterizing proteins for Olea europaea L. seeds and at producing two protein hydrolysates using alcalase and papain, respectively. Peptidomic analysis were performed, allowing to determine both medium- and short-sized peptides and to identify their potential biological activities...

Dipeptidyl peptidase III (DPP III) is a cytosolic, two-domain zinc-exopeptidase. It is widely distributed in mammalian tissues, where it's involved in the final steps of normal intracellular protein degradation. However, its pronounced affinity for some bioactive peptides (angiotensins, enkephalins, and endomorphins) suggests more specific functions such as blood pressure regulation and involvement in pain regulation. We have investigated several different neuropeptides as potential substrates and inhibitors of human DPP III...
