Health care providers caring for patients at the end of life (EOL) are faced with a multitude of emotions such as guilt, anger, sadness, and helplessness. Because of the negative impact of initiating EOL care (EOLC) to the pediatric population, organizations must be proactive in instituting education and resources on EOLC. They must also provide advanced skills to nurses who take care of patients at their EOL. Understanding the consequences of providing EOL care to patients in the pediatric intensive care unit allows for better allocation of resources and support services for nurses...

Chronic kidney disease affects many people around the world, leading those affected to replacement therapy such as hemodialysis. People who undergo hemodialysis generally undertake 2-3 treatments per week, lasting about 3-4 h each; patients spend many hours per week in contact with nurses, building a therapeutic relationship. The purpose of this work is to assess the quality of nurses' perceived caring attitudes and behaviors and to determine their perceptions regarding the importance of the therapeutic relationship with the assisted patients...

BACKGROUND: Losing competent nurses due to turnover can have adverse effects on healthcare administration, service delivery, and organizational dynamics. Frequent staff turnover can hinder optimal nursing practices, but some nurses remain committed. Therefore, understanding factors that foster sustained engagement and retention is crucial to create a retention strategy. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to explore the current experience of Indonesian nurses who retain their jobs in the hospital setting...

AIM: To map and explore primary research about factors related to retention, turnover and turnover intention among migrant nurses. BACKGROUND: Understanding retention and turnover among migrant nurses is essential, especially in the context of nursing shortage. There is a range of factors motivating nurses to emigrate; however, factors related to retention and turnover among migrant nurses in the host country are unclear. METHODS: This review utilised Arksey and O'Malley's methodological framework for scoping reviews, and is reported with the PRISMA-ScR checklist...

Delivering bad news often impacts nurses' emotional well-being and relationships with patients. However, most practice models do not offer a sufficient solution to the distress and reduced job satisfaction that may thus arise. This paper offers a critique of theoretical frameworks for breaking bad news in clinical settings, with the aim of highlighting the inadequate evidence available to guide nursing practice with regard to managing the emotional burden of breaking bad news. Firstly, the concept of emotional intelligence is introduced, followed by an overview of the impact of delivering bad news on the psychological well-being of healthcare workers...

This study determines the importance of nurses' self-care by identifying its effects as a moderating variable on the relationships between perceived stress, job burnout, and retention intention in clinical nurses. Hence, 174 clinical nurses who worked at two university hospitals and one general hospital located in Seoul, South Korea, participated in this study. As the hospitals required the use of recruitment notices, convenience sampling methods were adopted to recruit volunteers. The data were collected using the perceived stress scale, the burnout assessment tool, the nurse retention index, and the self-care assessment worksheet...

INTRODUCTION: Health professionals' maldistribution and retention in underserved areas are global problems. Burnout drives health professionals to leave rural areas. Chronic burnout is linked to depression, and nurses have a higher risk for depression than the general population. Studies suggest that increasing resilience may reduce depression. However, little is known about the effect of resilience on nurses' depression and their rural retention. This study aims to understand the impact of resilience and depression on nurses' retention in rural areas...

The clinical and translational research enterprise is recognized by many as the "evidence generation system." While there have been several calls to revolutionize this enterprise to more effectively deliver the fruits of biomedical science to patients and society, significant issues across the clinical research workforce are pervasive. Perhaps the most visible sign is the widening gap between supply and demand for competent staff. Underpinning this, is a perfect storm of complex issues. Now reaching crisis point, this problem is far bigger than a staffing issue and ultimately jeopardizes the "engine" of drug and device development...

The nurse residency program (NRP) was developed as a recruitment strategy for new graduate registered nurses (NGRNs). The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic impacted health care in many ways, including causing a decline in NGRN retention rates. Post-pandemic, the NRP needed to incorporate strategies that would promote nursing retention. Effective collaboration and innovative strategies were found to be key elements in promoting successful NGRN retention. [ J Contin Educ Nurs . 2023;54(6):245-247.] .

BACKGROUND: The neonatal intensive care unit is a specialized unit where nurses, physicians, and other providers take care of the smallest patients in healthcare. Because neonatal intensive care units are highly specialized, many nursing students graduate from undergraduate programs with little experience or knowledge related to the care of neonatal patients. RESULTS: Nursing residency programs with hands-on simulation training have been shown to provide significant benefits to new and novice nurses as they enter the workforce, particularly in areas where the patient population requires highly specialized treatment...
