Blood cultures are the primary method for diagnosing bloodstream infections. However, blood culture contamination (BCC) can lead to unnecessary antibiotic treatment, additional tests, and extended patient time in the hospital. The aim of this quality improvement project was to evaluate healthcare workers' knowledge of blood culture collection protocols and evaluate the blood culture contamination rates of laboratory and non-laboratory staff. We performed a retrospective review of contaminated cultures between May 2021 and April 2022, and anonymous surveys were distributed to assess staff knowledge of proper blood culture collection protocols...

BACKGROUND: The American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC's) Practice Transition Accreditation Program (PTAP) establishes standards for nurse residency programs to elevate and optimize the skills, knowledge, and attitudes of new nurses participating in nurse residency programs. Evidence-based practice (EBP) is foundational to providing safe nursing care. One of the National Academy of Medicine's (NAM's) 2020 goals stated that 90% of clinical decisions would be supported by the best available evidence to attain the best patient outcomes...

Adolescent suicide and mental illness have increased at alarming rates. Healthcare professionals report a lack of skill and confidence in obtaining adolescent histories and managing confidential care due to limited training in residency. Nursing professional development practitioners face challenges of adequately preparing interdisciplinary healthcare providers to assess, identify, and intervene at all points of contact with adolescents. To increase the confidence in clinical communication skills and clinical competency, and to increase the number of social work referrals related to modifiable risk factors for adolescent patients, a Texas pediatric tertiary care center utilized standardized patient (SP) methodology to supplement traditional clinical experiences with communication-focused education based on the Home, Education, Eating, Activities, Drugs, Sexuality, Suicidality, and Safety (HEEADSSS) interviewing...

Background: Providing end-of-life (EOL) care to pediatric patients and their families is challenging. Newly licensed nurses, especially those working with the hematology/oncology population, have little to no experience providing the specialized care needed for the dying child. An evidence-based continuing professional development activity provided a novel approach to improve the knowledge, attitudes, and comfort levels of nurse residents related to pediatric EOL care. Method: A high-fidelity simulation module of a pediatric oncology patient at the EOL was embedded into a 12-month nurse residency program...

Introduction Despite the fact that tobacco use continues to have significant public health impacts, most healthcare providers are not adequately trained to counsel patients on their tobacco use or to provide cessation resources. Although all healthcare providers have a role in providing tobacco cessation assistance, physicians and advanced practice providers are generally the only practitioners able to furnish tobacco cessation medications and bill insurance for their cessation services. Therefore, ensuring these practitioners are properly trained to offer tobacco cessation to their patients is critical to addressing this public health threat...

INTRODUCTION: Intravenous (IV) therapy is a crucial aspect of care for the critically ill patient. Barriers to IV infusion pumps in low-resource settings include high costs, lack of access to electricity, and insufficient technical support. Inaccuracy of traditional drop-counting practices places patients at risk. By conducting a comparative assessment of IV infusion methods, we analyzed the efficacy of different devices and identified one that most effectively bridges the gap between accuracy, cost, and electricity reliance in low-resource environments...

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization estimated a need for around 6 million nurses by 2030 to meet the healthcare demand. The International Council of Nurses reported that, the impact of COVID-19 pandemic, the aging nursing workforce, and the high turnover of nurses were some of the factors that contributed to the anticipated 13 million nursing deficit. Globally, there is a worry about the high turnover with no doubt. The cost of turnover and recruitment incurred by healthcare organizations are huge which requires developing measures and interventions to address the problem...

This study examined differences in newly licensed nurses' role transition experiences while enrolled in a nurse residency program before and during the pandemic. The Casey-Fink Graduate Nurse Experience Survey measured baseline, 6-month, and 12-month program outcomes. The prepandemic cohort had higher subscale scores at baseline. Both cohort groups showed significant increases in role confidence, patient safety, communication/leadership, and job satisfaction. Despite the pandemic, nurse residency program completion rates remained stable...

This creative option for teaching EBP may assist other educators in finding interactive learning opportunities for this content...

Since 2012, more than 1666 new-graduate nurses have participated, leading to an average 1st-year retention rate of 96.77%. Statewide nurse residency collaboratives are adaptable, may cost less than other alternatives, and may save on lost funds due to nurse attrition, resulting in an enhanced nursing workforce...
