Percutaneous endoscopic ureterolithotomy is not a well-known method for the treatment of impacted ureteral stones. The authors performed a retrospective study to compare the effectiveness of this procedure to ureteroscopy for the treatment of ureteral calculi. Impacted ureteral stones were removed in 93 patients by percutaneous endoscopic ureterolithotomy (Group 1). In 142 patients, ureteroscopy was performed for the treatment of the ureteral stones (Group 2). The same instruments were used to carry out percutaneous endoscopic ureterolithotomy as were used for percutaneous nephrolithotomy...

BACKGROUND: Temporary ureteric stent insertion is an integral part of modern endo-urological practice. Delayed stent removal or forgotten stents are associated with increased patient morbidity and complications which are often difficult to manage. METHODS AND RESULTS: We prospectively audited our ureteric stent insertion and removal logbook system to determine the value and effectiveness of our stent follow-up. Over a 1-year period, 210 ureteric stents were inserted in our urological unit...

Actually ureteroscopy represents the therapy of choice for the treatment of ureteric stones. In the case of bilateral synchronous ureteric calculi the options are between a staged or a synchronous procedure; the last would potentially reduce costs and the need for a second anesthetic in comparison with a staged procedure. We reviewed our experience with bilateral same session ureteroscopy and compared with staged bilateral or unilateral procedure in the same series. The size and site of the stones were similar in all groups with a mean of 8...

Ureteropyeloscopy was made in 57 patients with ureterolithiasis. It was effective in 55 (96.5%) patients. Perforation of ureteral wall was in 1 (1.7%) patient. It was diagnosed intraoperatively, the patient was stented and discharged with recovery. Postoperative exacerbation of chronic pyelonephritis was registered in 1 (1.7%) patient who received a conservative treatment. Thus, clinical efficacy of endoscopic elimination of ureteroliths was 96.5%. Endoscopic treatment is indicated in multiple ureteroliths, stone trace, ureteroliths with ureteral stricture...

Brown tumor is not a true tumor, being an unusual reactive lesion in association with primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. We report a 23-year-old woman, who initially presented with lower back pain caused by ureterolithiasis. The initial diagnosis of brown tumor was delayed, but later pain in her leg worsened and a sacral lesion was incidentally discovered on lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI); multiple destructive bone lesions were then found radiologically. The radiological features of the multiple bone lesions, which mimicked multiple metastatic tumors, seemed to be those of the terminal stage of malignancy...

OBJECTIVE: In a prospective study, the feasibility of 3-dimensional (3D) transrectal/transvaginal sonography in comparison with transabdominal sonography and intravenous urography (IVU) in identifying distal ureteral calculi was evaluated. METHODS: Sixty-two patients in the urologic clinic with clinical suspicion of distal ureteral calculi were included. The patients consisted of 44 men and 18 women with a mean age +/- SD of 44 +/- 17 years. These patients underwent 3D transrectal/transvaginal sonography, transabdominal sonography with IVU, and, finally, ureterorenoscopy...

AIM: Improvements in extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) and ureteroscopy have almost eradicated the need for open surgery in ureteral stones. The aim of this study was to assess characteristics of patients who underwent open ureterolithotomy. METHODS: During a 5-year period, a total of 654 patients with ureteral stones were treated. Initial management consisted of ureteroscopy in 524 patients, ESWL in 62 patients and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in 12 patients...

The aim of the study was to establish the usefulness of ultrasound examination for imaging of stones dislocation in urinary tract after lithotripsy treatment. The study group included 335 children with urolithiasis treated in our Clinic since 1994 until 2005y. In the group were 295 (88%) children with nephrolithiasis and 40 (12%) children with ureterolithiasis. In the whole group 335 children there were performed 619 lithotripsy procedures--545 kidney and 74 ureter units. The ultrasound examinations were performed in each patient before, on the first and second day of the treatment and two months after using the Hitachi EUB 315 with 5Mhz transducer...

The purpose of this study is to present our experience with ureteral lithotripsy in ureteroscopy in children. Between 1996-2004, 105 patients aged 1,5-13 years with urolithiasis were treated in our department. Eight (8) of them with ureterolithiasis (5 in the lower ureter and 3 in the middle ureter) were treated with ureteroscopy (URS). The procedure was possible in all patients. The ureteroscopical approach of the stone and subsequent lithotripsy took place without major complications. There was a small difficulty to enter the ureteral orifice but it was overcome using dilations...

Stents in urology have been used for a long time in the management of nephro-ureterolithiasis. However, the indications for stent insertion have increased during the last few years and they are now used both diagnostically and therapeutically in a variety of cases. A brief history of the name is presented along with a review of the indications and the complications of stent usage.

Today sonography is the first line imaging method for diagnosing acute appendicitis. Experienced investigators will have an accuracy of more than 90%. Sonography can diagnose many conservatively managed diseases. The most important differential diagnoses are infectious ileocoecitis, right sided diverticulitis, appendagitis, adnexitis, ruptured or torque ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancies. Ureterolithiasis, cholecystitis, haematomas in the psoas muscle or in the rectus muscle are rarer causes of right lower quadrant pain...
