Lupin species provide essential nutrients and bioactive compounds. Within pulses, they have one of the highest contents of proteins and fibers and are among the poorest in carbohydrates. The Mediterranean region is an important cradle area of the origin and domestication of cultivated white lupin ( Lupinus albus L.). In this work, we present the characterization of 19 white lupin landraces collected from several sites in southern Italy, characterized by different pedoclimatic conditions. The protein contents and electrophoretic patterns, total polyphenols, phytic acid, lipids and phosphorous content, and reducing and anti-tryptic activities have been determined for each landrace...

Purpose: Clinical evidence suggests an association between comorbidities and outcome in patients with glioblastoma (GBM). We hypothesised that the internal carotid artery (ICA) calcium score could represent a promising prognostic biomarker in a competing risk analysis in patients diagnosed with GBM. Methods: We validated the use of the ICA calcium score as a surrogate marker of the coronary calcium score in 32 patients with lung cancer. Subsequently, we assessed the impact of the ICA calcium score on overall survival in GBM patients treated with radio-chemotherapy...

(1) Background: Older patients who attend emergency departments are frailer than younger patients and are at a high risk of adverse outcomes; (2) Methods: To conduct this systematic review, we adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Guidelines. We systematically searched literature from PubMed, Embase, OVID Medline® , Scopus, CINAHL via EBSCOHost, and the Cochrane Library up to May 2023, while for grey literature we used Google Scholar. No time restrictions were applied, and only articles published in English were included...

Objectives An observational, retrospective, longitudinal, and analytical study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the erector spinae plane (ESP) block in managing pain in patients with vertebral fractures secondary to tumoral activity. This study included patients treated at the Pain Clinic who underwent ESP block. The objectives were to describe demographic characteristics, oncological diagnosis, vertebral fracture features, imaging techniques, medications used, and the level of ESP block. Additionally, pain levels were assessed using a numerical analog scale, and the consumption of opioid analgesic medications before and after the ESP block, during follow-up consultations, along with patient satisfaction...

The pathophysiological mechanisms driving disease progression of frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) and corresponding biomarkers are not fully understood. We leveraged aptamer-based proteomics (> 4,000 proteins) to identify dysregulated communities of co-expressed cerebrospinal fluid proteins in 116 adults carrying autosomal dominant FTLD mutations ( C9orf72 , GRN , MAPT ) compared to 39 noncarrier controls. Network analysis identified 31 protein co-expression modules. Proteomic signatures of genetic FTLD clinical severity included increased abundance of RNA splicing (particularly in C9orf72 and GRN ) and extracellular matrix (particularly in MAPT ) modules, as well as decreased abundance of synaptic/neuronal and autophagy modules...

Regional anesthesia nerve blocks are increasingly used for patients undergoing cardiac surgery as part of multimodal pain management. Though rare, local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) is a severe complication that requires vigilant monitoring. We present a case of a postcardiac surgery patient who developed LAST multiple days after surgery from lidocaine via an erector spinae plane catheter. This episode was determined to be a result of impaired lidocaine metabolism from liver shock caused by worsening pulmonary hypertension...

Purpose: Retroperitoneal robotic-assisted pyeloplasty (ret-RAP) for ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO) requires a larger retroperitoneal space (RS) to maintain specified distances between robotic (da Vinci) trocars and between trocars and the region of interest. A modified closed technique (MOT) and conventional closed technique (COT) were compared for creating an adequate RS with optical trocars. Methods: RS access in children with UPJO who underwent ret-RAP ( n  = 30) was MOT ( n  = 15) and COT ( n  = 15)...

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a critical phase of development characterized by numerous physical, psychological and social changes. During this stage, individuals may engage in experimentation and risky behavior, leading to increased vulnerability to addiction. BACKGROUND/CONTEXT: Degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) is a prevalent spinal condition that can result in significant disability. DLS is thought to result from a combination of disc and facet joint degeneration, as well as various biological, biomechanical, and behavioral factors. One hypothesis is the progressive degeneration of segmental stabilizers, notably the paraspinal muscles, contributes to a vicious cycle of increasing slippage. PURPOSE: To examine the correlation between paraspinal muscle status on MRI and severity of slippage in patients with symptomatic DLS...

BACKGROUND: Sleep-wake dysfunction is an early and common event in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The lateral hypothalamic area (LHA) regulates the sleep and wake cycle through wake-promoting orexinergic and sleep-promoting melanin-concentrating hormone (MCH) neurons. These neurons share close anatomical proximity with functional reciprocity. This study investigated the pattern of neuronal loss (ORX and MCH) in the LHA in AD. Understanding the degeneration pattern of these neurons will be instrumental in designing potential therapeutics to slow down the disease progression and remediate the sleep-wake dysfunction in AD...

OBJECTIVES: Intravenous opioids and local anesthetic infiltrations are traditionally used to relieve postoperative pain. With developments in the field of regional anesthesia, several methods are now available for postoperative analgesia. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the erector spinae plane block (ESPB) in reducing both intraoperative opioid consumption and postoperative analgesic use in patients undergoing percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). METHODS: A total of 60 patients who underwent PCNL were divided into two groups: 30 patients who received ESPB (Group I) and 30 patients in the control group (Group II)...
