The increasing occurrence of engineered nanoparticles (NPs) in soils may decrease water uptake in crops, followed by lower crop yield and quality. As one of the most common rare earth oxide NPs, lanthanum oxide (La2 O3 ) NPs may inhibit the relative expressions of aquaporin genes, thus reduce water uptake. In the present study, maize plants were exposed to different La2 O3 NPs concentrations (0, 5, 50 mg L-1 ) for 72 h and 144 h right after the first leaf extended completely. Our results revealed that water uptake was reduced by La2 O3 NPs through accelerating the development of apoplastic barriers in maize roots...

To investigate whether nitrogen (N) load affects the ozone (O3 ) stomatal flux-effect relationship for birch biomass, three-year old birch saplings were exposed to seven different O3 profiles (24 h mean of 35-66 ppb) and four different N loads (10, 30, 50 and 70 kg ha-1  yr-1 ) in precision-controlled hemispherical glasshouses (solardomes) in 2012 and 2013. Stomatal conductance (gs ) under optimal growth conditions was stimulated by enhanced N supply but was not significantly affected by enhanced O3 exposure...

BACKGROUND: Ozonated water (O3 wat) soil drench and/or foliar spray applications, were evaluated for their potential to control the root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita (RKN) and the airborne pathogen Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) in tomato. We investigated how O3 wat modulates the SA/JA/ET signalling network in the host, locally and systemically, to induce resistance to nematode and virus. RESULTS: The application as soil drench was effective in reducing the number of galls and egg masses, but did not reduce the incidence and severity of TSWV infection...

To assess the impacts of ozone (O3 ) on carbon metabolism of subtropical broadleaved tree species, seedlings of Phoebe bournei and Phoebe zhennan were exposed to elevated O3 levels in open-top chambers (OTCs) from June to November 2014. Three treatments were conducted in nine total OTCs, including charcoal-filter air (CF) as a control treatment, low O3 treatment 'O3-1' (∼100 nl l-1 ), and high O3 treatment 'O3-2' (∼150 nl l-1 ). Our findings demonstrated that elevated O3 levels significantly decreased the net photosynthesis rates ( Pn ) and leaf, root, and total biomass of both species, while it did not significantly affect the root/shoot ratio in P...

The behavior of nanoparticles released to the soil has been extensively studied in recent years; however, the effects of nanoparticles on the distribution of soil elements and on sowing are still unknown. To this end, to examine the distribution of selected elements in soil, soil samples were treated weekly with 1.0 mg and 20.0 mg of Al2 O3 nanoparticles for 3 weeks. Additionally, different types of plants (including taproot, fibrous root and ornamental bulbous plants) were sowed in the soil samples. After each treatment, surface soil samples were collected and digested with acid digestion...

This study aimed to determine effects of biochar derived from wheat straw at 500 °C on arsenic immobilization in a soil-Brassica campestris L system. When the soils amended with 4% modified biochar (MBC), 0.5% Fe grit as zero-valent iron (ZVI), 0.5% Fe grit + 4% MBC (ZMBC), 0.5% ZVI + 4% biochar (ZBC), 4% biochar (BC), and control (without amendments), it confirmed that available arsenic concentration in soils occurred in the following order: ZMBC < MBC < ZVI < ZBC < Control < BC. Water-soluble As (WSAs) was reduced by 89...

Wide use of Al2 O3 nanoparticles (NPs) leading to their possible escape into environment and their interaction with living organisms demands immediate attention. We evaluated impact of nanoparticulate (Al2 O3 -NPs) and ionic (Al3+ ) forms of aluminium on early seedling growth of Vigna radiata. While Al3+ inhibited growth of seedlings, Al2 O3 -NPs did not affect it negatively. Unlike enhancement in proline, malondialdehyde and H2 O2 levels in roots and shoots induced by Al3+ , these stress markers remained unaltered by Al2 O3 -NPs...

Specific analytical approaches that enable untargeted profiling of modified metabolites are in great need. An untargeted profiling strategy, by integrating in-source collision-induced dissociation (ISCID)-MS1 , mass tag-MS2 , and neutral loss scan-MS3 , is established on a linear ion-trap/Orbitrap mass spectrometer coupled to ultra-high performance liquid chromatography. This strategy is applied to screen malonylginsenosides from three reputable Panax species (P. ginseng, P. quinquefolius, and P. notoginseng)...

Plants are occasionally exposed to environmental perturbations that limit their growth. One of these perturbations is the exposure to and interaction with various nanoparticles (NPs) that are discarded continuously into the environment. Hitherto, no study has been carried out evaluating the effects of iron oxide (γ-Fe2 O3 ) NPs on soybean growth and lignin formation, as proposed herein. For comparative purposes, we also submitted soybean plants to non-nanoparticulate iron (FeCl3 ). Exposure of the plants to γ-Fe2 O3 NPs increased cell wall-bound peroxidase (POD) activity but decreased phenylalanine ammonia lyase (PAL) activity due, probably, to the negative feedback of accumulated phenolic compounds...

Tropospheric ozone (O3 ) concentrations have now reached levels that can potentially affect crop production in several regions of the world. The interacting effects of the elevated O3 and temperature on plants are still unclear and their consequences on the rhizosphere microbial communities never studied yet. Here, we conducted a 3-week fumigation experiment on two cultivars of wheat with different tolerance to O3 (Premio and Soissons) at two temperatures (20 °C and 30 °C). The impacts of O3 were measured on plants physiology, rhizosphere chemical environment and microbial communities...

Tropospheric ozone (O3 ) is a phytotoxic air pollutant causing a substantial damage to plants and agriculture worldwide. Plant productivity is affected by several environmental factors, which interact with each other. Studies related to interactions involving O3 and different levels of nitrogen (N) are still rare and elusive. In the present study we grew two wheat cultivars (HD2967 and Sonalika) in open top chambers (OTC) under ambient (AO) and elevated O3 (EO) (ambient + 20 ppb O3 ) and provided two levels of N fertilization; (a) recommended nitrogen (RN), (b) 1...

Due to the increased use of nanoparticles in everyday applications, there is a need for theoretical descriptions of particle transport and attachment in porous media. It should be possible to develop a one dimensional model to describe nanoparticle retention during capillary transport of liquid mixtures in porous media. Water-glycerol-nanoparticle mixtures were prepared and the penetration process in porous Al2 O3 samples of varying pore size is measured using NMR imaging. The liquid and particle front can be measured by utilizing T2 relaxation effects from the paramagnetic nanoparticles...
