Species ecology and life history patterns are often reflected in animal morphology. Blue whales are globally distributed, with distinct populations that feed in different productive coastal regions worldwide. Thus, they provide an opportunity to investigate how regional ecosystem characteristics may drive morphological differences within a species. Here, we compare physical and biological oceanography of three different blue whale foraging grounds: (1) Monterey Bay, California, USA; (2) the South Taranaki Bight (STB), Aotearoa New Zealand; and (3) the Corcovado Gulf, Chile...

Edentulism produces resorption of alveolar bone processes, which can complicate placement of dental implants. Guided bone regeneration techniques aim to recover the volume of bone. These treatments are susceptible to the surgical technique employed, the design of the autologous block or the tension of the suture. These factors can relate to major complications as the lack of primary closure and dehiscence. The present study, using finite element analysis, aimed to determine differences in terms of displacement of the oral mucosa, transferred stress according to Von Mises and deformation of soft tissue when two block graft designs (right-angled and rounded) and two levels of suture tension (0...

Synopsis: Archerfishes (Toxotidae) are variously found in the fresh- and brackish-water environments of Asia Pacific and are well known for their ability to shoot water at terrestrial prey. These shots of water are intended to strike their prey and cause it to fall into the water for capture and consumption. While this behavior is well known, there are competing hypotheses (blowpipe vs. pressure tank hypothesis) of how archerfishes shoot and which oral structures are involved. Current understanding of archerfish shooting structures is largely based on two species, Toxotes chatareus and T...

Lettuce ( Lactuca sativa L.) is the world's most popular leafy salad vegetable. One of the major challenges facing lettuce producers are fungal diseases that could, under favorable conditions, devastate the harvest (Raid, 2004). During February 2021, poor growth, plant stunning and blanching of leaves of lettuce plants, cultivated in unheated plastic tunel in Potočanje (Zlatibor region), Serbia, were observed. The crowns were softened with spreading decaying lesions covered with white mycelium, particulary on the leaves near the soil surface...

This article provides an overview of diagnostic evaluation and ablation treatment assessment in Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC). Only studies, in the English language from January 2010 to January 202, evaluating the diagnostic tools and assessment of ablative therapies in HCC patients were included. We found 173 clinical studies that satisfied the inclusion criteria.HCC may be noninvasively diagnosed by imaging findings. Multiphase contrast-enhanced imaging is necessary to assess HCC. Intravenous extracellular contrast agents are used for CT, while the agents used for MRI may be extracellular or hepatobiliary...

BACKGROUND: The molecular reclassification of the order Trichosporonales placed the medically relevant Trichosporon species into three genera of the family Trichosporonaceae: Cutaneotrichosporon, Trichosporon, and Apiotrichum. From the clinical and epidemiological standpoint, it is important to identify any species of the family Trichosporonaceae because they present different antifungal susceptibility profiles. In Mexico, little is known about trichosporonosis etiology because the fungi are identified through phenotypic methods...

The amygdaloid body is a limbic nuclear complex characterized by connections with the thalamus, the brainstem and the neocortex. The recent advances in functional neurosurgery regarding the treatment of refractory epilepsy and several neuropsychiatric disorders renewed the interest in the study of its functional Neuroanatomy. In this scenario, we felt that a morphological study focused on the amygdaloid body and its connections could improve the understanding of the possible  implications in functional neurosurgery...

This findings may help the clinician determine the correct treatment and security measure that need to be taken aaccording to the phase of the disease.

The aim of study is to identify morfological signs of the skin damage, formed by electric discharge of different models of tasers, and therefore to determine construction features characterizing taser's models, as well as to detect the conditions of traumatization. As a result of experiment it was revealed that various morphological skin damages are caused by difference in the configuration of taser's terminal elements. It gives reason for an objective conclusion about stun gun's specific model.

OBJECTIVE: During reproductive age of a woman, endometrium undergoes frequent stuctural and functional changes. Abilities of regeneration, remodelation and differentiation are precondition of endometrial receptivity and implantation and development of an embryo. These processes are conditioned by mutual transformation between mesenchymal and epithelial fenotype of endometrial cells: epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET). The aim of this study is to present contemporary knowledge of transformation between epithelial and mesenchymal endometrial cells and its influence on human fertility...

Solitary pulmonary nodule corresponds to a common radiographic finding, which is frequently detected incidentally. The investigation of this entity remains complex, since characteristics of benign and malignant processes overlap in the differential diagnosis. Currently, many strategies are available to evaluate solitary pulmonary nodules with the main objective of characterizing benign lesions as best as possible, while avoiding to expose patients to the risks inherent to invasive methods, besides correctly detecting cases of lung cancer so as the potential curative treatment is not delayed...

METHODS: In the group of six patients with selected types of retinal dystrophies was analysed the morphological findings obtained by the Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and their correlation with the electrophysiological findings. RESULTS: Typical morphological retinal changes visualised by OCT were confirmed in all examined patients and were in correlation with progressive loss of visual function (decrease of visual acuity, constriction of visual field or scotomas in visual field, colour vision defect, nyctalopia) and abnormal values of the electrophysiological findings...
