BACKGROUND: Assessing the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) is a new tool for predicting inflamation, which plays a major role in atherosclerosis. Myocardial bridge (MB) is thought to be a benign condition with development of atherosclerosis, particularly at the proximal segment of the brigde. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationhip between MHR and the presence of MB. METHODS: We consecutively scanned patients referred for coronary angiography between January 2013- December 2016, and a total of 160 patients who had a MB and normal coronary artery were enrolled in the study...

Two divergent cascade reactions of arylalkynols with homopropargylic amines or electron-deficient olefins were developed to synthesize the spiro-isobenzofuran- b-pyrroloquinolines or bridged-isobenzofuran heterocycles in good yields, respectively. One reaction actually involved intramolecular 5- endo-dig hydroamination cyclization-protonation of homopropargylic amines to give cycloiminium ions and intramolecular 5- exo-dig hydroalkoxylation cyclization of arylalkynols to generate isobenzofuran with exocyclic double bond, followed by the nontypical Povarov-type reaction in the presence of PtCl2 /FeCl3 cocatalysts...

Two amantadine (ATD)-gardenamide A (GA) ligands have been designed and synthesized. The bonding of ATD with GA through a methylene carbonyl brigde (L1) enhances the neuroprotective effect against corticosterone (CORT)-induced impairments in PC12 cells; while the bonding through a succinyl brigde (L2) does not. L1 reduces the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and cell apoptosis generated by CORT. It restores CORT-changed cell morphology to a state that is closed to normal PC12 cells. One mechanism of L1 to attenuate CORT-induced cell apoptosis is through the adjustment of both caspase-3 and Bcl-2 proteins...

μ-Nitrido diiron phthalocyanine [PcFe(+3.5)NFe(+3.5)Pc](0) is an efficient catalyst, able to catalyze the oxidation of methane under near-ambient conditions. In this work, we compared the properties of structurally similar μ-carbido (1), μ-nitrido (2), and μ-oxo (3) dimers of iron phthalocyanine. The goal was to discern the structural and electronic differences between these complexes and to propose a rationale for the exceptional activity of 2. Extended X-ray fine-structure spectroscopy, high-resolution X-ray emission spectroscopy, and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering were applied to study the geometry and electronic structure of iron species in the series 1-3...

The encoding of letter position is a key aspect in all recently proposed models of visual-word recognition. We analyzed the impact of lexical frequency on letter position assignment by examining the temporal dynamics of lexical activation induced by pseudowords extracted from words of different frequencies. For each word (e.g., BRIDGE), we created two pseudowords: A transposed-letter (TL: BRIGDE) and a replaced-letter pseudoword (RL: BRITGE). ERPs were recorded while participants read words and pseudowords in two tasks: Semantic categorization (experiment 1) and lexical decision (experiment 2)...

The traditional distinction between ecological and evolutionary times is eroding, calling for tighter links between ecology and evolution. An example of such a brigde between the two disciplines is the so-called 'animal model', a methodology initially developed by animal breeders, which has become very popular among ecologists studying contemporary microevolution. Using a Bayesian multi-trait 'animal model', we investigated the quantitative genetics of body size, a fitness-related trait, in Subantarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus tropicalis) breeding on Amsterdam Island, Southern Ocean...

Activation of the NF-kappaB pathway by the TNF-receptor Edar (Ectodysplasin receptor) and its downstream adaptator Edaradd (Edar-associated death domain) is essential for the development of hair follicles, teeth, exocrine glands and other ectodermal derivatives. Dysfunction of Edar signalling causes hypohidrotic/anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (ED), a disorder characterized by sparse hair, lack of sweat glands and malformation of teeth. The Edar signalling pathway stimulates NF-kappaB transcription factors via an activation of the IkappaB kinase (IKK) complex...
