BACKGROUND: The gene expression of the cytokines interleukin-2 (IL-2) and IL-10 in peritoneal washings was examined in relation to the presence of cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity in patients with gastric cancer. METHODS: Total RNA was extracted from 50-ml peritoneal wash samples from 124 patients (gastric cancer, n = 110; controls, n = 14). Carcinoembrionic antigen (CEA) messenger RNA (mRNA) was used to identify the number of cancer cells in peritoneal wash samples by a real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) method, which method was also used to assay the IL-2 and IL-10 gene expression levels...

This report describes the successful treatment of a case of cardiac adenocarcinoma with the clinical presentation as Budd-Chiari syndrome. Complete surgical excision of the atriocaval mass was successfully achieved under deep hypothermic circulatory arrest. Histopathological diagnosis of this tumor was tubular adenocarcinoma with positive immunostaining by carcinoembrionic antigen. Subsequent systemic search could not detect any evidence of extra-cardiac primary site and distant metastatic lesion. A 2-year follow-up without any adjuvant therapy revealed no sign of recurrence...

Development of cutaneous metastases from colon cancer is a rare event, usually occurring in the setting of diffusely-disseminated disease and commonly carrying a dismal prognosis. Cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases in surgical scars occur extremely rarely, with only a few cases reported. We describe two cases of cutaneous metastases from colon cancer. A 62-year-old woman developed an 11-cm midline abdominal mass that slowly grew on the skin surface. The mass occurred at the scar site of her previous surgery performed 5 years prior for resection of a colon adenocarcinoma...

BACKGROUND: The prognosis for patients with scirrhous gastric cancer (SGC) is extremely poor. To improve the patients' prognosis, laparoscopic-assisted intraperitoneal chemotherapy (IPC) was introduced for SGC. In this study, we analyzed whether IPC reduced the number of cancer cells in the peritoneal cavity of patients or changed the gene expression levels of cytokines in the peritoneal cavity. We also investigated whether IPC improved the prognosis of patients with SGC. METHODS: Total RNA was extracted from 50 ml of peritoneal wash from 11 SGC patients before and after cisplatin-based IPC...

The cytokine hormone prolactin (PRL) has been shown previously to modulate native cellular responses and maturation of antigen-presenting cells. Here we have addressed its effect on the antigen-specific response of cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). CTL were generated from HLA-A2 lymphocytes after three rounds of stimulation with autologous dendritic cells loaded with HLA-A2-restricted carcinoembrionic antigen (CEA) Cap-1 (YLSGANLNL) peptide. Selected cultures were expanded on cytokine-supplemented feeder-layers, enriched for CD8+ lymphocytes and analysed for PRL-receptor (PRL-R) expression and PRL responsiveness...

We describe the unusual case of a Caucasian woman who had a diagnosis of medullary thyroid cancer and papillary microcarcinoma 5 years after a diagnosis of Graves' disease. The patient came to our observation for recurrence of hyperthyroidism. An ultrasound scan revealed diffuse thyroid enlargement with a nodule, recently increased in size. The serum CT and carcinoembrional antigen were elevated, and the fine-needle aspiration cytology with immunocytochemical analysis for CT was suggestive for medullary thyroid carcinoma...
