GOALS AND BACKGROUND: Gluten-free diet (GFD) includes a higher intake of sugars and fats. Previous studies have investigated its effect on body mass index (BMI) in celiac disease (CD) patients but had contradictive conclusions. Thus, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the effect of GFD on BMI in CD patients. STUDY: Systematically, we conducted literature research using Medline, Scopus, and Embase, and we identified 1565 potential studies/abstracts...

Background: Our aim is to propose a framework for the development of a research case definition of lipedema, based on current available literature and those observations that can be applied to future lipedema research with the intent to standardize and strengthen the scientific evidence base. Methods and Results: We conducted a narrative review of the literature, and identified consensus characteristics and disputed characteristics that could be included in a research case definition of lipedema. After considering the strength of the evidence and how each characteristic might be measured in a research study, we recommended an approach for the development of a research case definition of lipedema that would be based on consideration of five agreed-upon characteristics, and five disputed, or less substantiated, characteristics as additional evidence to enhance specificity...

Cancer metabolism is a marvellously complex topic, in part, due to the reprogramming of its pathways to self-sustain the malignant phenotype in the disease, to the detriment of its healthy counterpart. Understanding these adjustments can provide novel targeted therapies that could disrupt and impair proliferation of cancerous cells. For this very purpose, genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs) have been developed, with Human1 being the most recent reconstruction of the human metabolism. Based on GEMs, we introduced the genetic Minimal Cut Set (gMCS) approach, an uncontextualized methodology that exploits the concepts of synthetic lethality to predict metabolic vulnerabilities in cancer...

Adhesions following hand surgery are common, leading to stiffness, which compromises the functional outcomes for the patient. The objective of this study was to conduct a systematic review to analyze the role of antiadhesive barriers in surgery for hand trauma. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, in line with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines. The inclusion criteria included both randomized and non-randomized control studies in patients aged 18 or over, with the intervention of an anti-adhesive barrier compared against traditional repair without a barrier in patients with hand trauma, including nerve, fracture, and tendon injury...

BACKGROUND: Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is a psychotherapy technique, which promotes psychological flexibility and enables patients to change behaviors based on value-directed goals. However, the beneficial effects of ACT on glycemic control, self-care behaviors, acceptance of diabetes, self-efficacy, and psychological burden are still unclear among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). AIMS: This study aimed to systematically synthesize scientific evidence to determine the effectiveness of ACT among patients with T2DM on glycemic control, self-care behaviors, acceptance of diabetes, self-efficacy, and psychological burden and identify the optimal characteristics of effective interventions...

Individuals' beliefs about the malleability of emotions have been theorised to play a role in their psychological distress by influencing emotion regulation processes, such as the use of emotion regulation strategies. We conducted a meta-analysis to test this idea across studies with a focus on the relationships between emotion malleability beliefs and five distinct emotion regulation strategies: cognitive reappraisal, suppression, avoidance, rumination, and acceptance. Further, using two-stage meta-analytic structural equation modelling (TSSEM), we examined whether the emotion regulation strategies mediate the cross-sectional relationship between emotion malleability beliefs and psychological distress across studies...

The global burden of oral diseases is high, but access to oral health care is still problematic, especially in low-income and middle-income countries. The prevention of oral diseases in the child and adolescent population is the key as it can be prevented and potentially reversed at its early stages. This study aims to provide evidence on the effectiveness of school-based oral health education in low-income and middle-income countries through a systematic review and meta-analysis. Eligible studies had outcomes, such as oral health knowledge, behavior, oral hygiene, gingival health, and caries index, and those published from 1995 to 2019 in English...
