OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate clinical outcomes, imaging changes, and age differences with regard to temporomandibular joint disc condylar complex with anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDWoR). METHODS: A total of 37 patients (45 lateral joints) with ADDWoR who were admitted to The First Affiliated Hospital of Zheng Zhou University from January 2016 to June 2023 were selected. The patients were composed of 4 males and 33 females and had an average age of 23...

Pediatric temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders represent a broad range of congenital and acquired diagnoses. Dentofacial deformities, including facial asymmetry, retrognathism, and malocclusion, commonly develop. Compared with adult TMJ conditions, pain and articular disc pathology are less common. Accurate diagnosis is paramount in planning and prognostication. Several specific considerations apply in preparation for skeletal correction, including timing in relation to disease progression and growth trajectory, expectation for postcorrection stability, reconstructive technique as it applies to expected durability and need for future revision, management of occlusion, and need for ancillary procedures to optimize correction...

BACKGROUND: The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a complex joint that facilitates mandibular movements during speech, chewing, and swallowing activities. The Axis I evaluation of the DC/TMD focuses on assessing physical diagnoses related to TMDs. It includes an assessment of pain and functional limitations, such as jaw opening range, joint sounds, and joint tenderness. The Axis II evaluation of the DC/TMD provides information on the patient's psychological status and quality of life. This Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis aimed to evaluate the accuracy of Temporomandibular Disorders diagnosis considered through the Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorder (DC/TDM) axis II compared to the Axis I evaluations...

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed the incidence of postfracture radiological temporomandibular joint (TMJ) degeneration in patients with different types of mandibular fractures, focusing on the impact of condylar fractures. METHODS: This retrospective review included patients diagnosed as having mandibular fractures from 2016 to 2020 who had undergone initial computed tomography (CT) and a follow-up CT scan at least 1-month postfracture. Patient demographics, fracture details, treatment methods, and radiological signs of TMJ degeneration on CT were analyzed to identify risk factors for postfracture TMJ degeneration, with a focus on condylar head fracture and non-head (condylar neck or base) fractures...

INTRODUCTION: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) may include conditions involving the temporomandibular joint and/or masticatory muscles. Approximately 20 % of patients are refractory to first-line therapies. This study aims to evaluate the effects and safety of incobotulinumtoxinA in the treatment of refractory TMD due to disk dislocation. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A quasi-experimental one-arm prospective study was conducted. Target population included individuals with a diagnosis of TMD due to disk dislocation...

Psoriatic arthritis is defined as chronic inflammatory arthritis associated with psoriasis. The current data regarding gender differences in clinical manifestation and therapeutic outcomes of psoriatic arthritis are limited. Generally, men show a peripheral disease manifestation, while women have an axial distribution of the lesions. If we look at temporomandibular joint (TMJ) involvement, epidemiological data on the involvement of the TMJ are hard to find. Few studies on therapeutic management and the related impact on the quality of life are reported in the literature...

BACKGROUND: The temporomandibular joint diseases have been associated with various predisposing factors. Joint spaces, articular eminence height and inclination, and the shapes of the condylar and glenoid fossa have all been shown to vary in temporomandibular joint diseases (TMD) patients. Advanced imaging techniques like cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) have been employed to estimate these parameters. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The aim of the current study was to investigate the condylar morphology, condylar and glenoid fossa shapes, and assessment of joint spaces, such as anterior, posterior, superior, lateral, and medial spaces, through CBCT slices in coronal and sagittal planes and compare them between the control group and TMD group...

Based on previous literature and clinical experience, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and psychostimulant medications might represent factors associated with orofacial pain symptoms. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess whether common orofacial pain complaints such as jaw pain, jaw clicking, teeth clenching and headaches are more prevalent in dental patients who have an ADHD diagnosis and/or use psychostimulant medications...

The prevalence of TMD indicates a need to develop new tools that are useful in the case of screening examinations. These methods can support diagnosis at the early stage of the disorder. The purpose of this research was to develop a comprehensive tool that would function as both a database of sounds generated by TMJ and as software which facilitates automated diagnosis. The software would also use the data from the RDC/TMD questionnaire. Such a tool may significantly reduce the time spent by dentists on making manual RDC/TMD diagnoses...

Neoplasms in the infratemporal fossa (ITF) are rare and insidious lesions that cause various symptoms due to involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), paranasal sinuses, and orbit. Here, we report a case of metastatic non-small cell lung adenocarcinoma in the ITF. The patient presented with facial pain and limited mouth opening, which did not respond to treatment for TMJ disorder, and a neoplasm was discovered in the ITF through medical imaging. With an open biopsy, the diagnosis was finalized. This report suggested that the physician should consider lesions in the ITF when facial pain and limited mouth opening failed local treatment, and distant metastasis of malignant tumor should be alerted...

BACKGROUND: The Herbst appliance is an excellent therapy for treating class II malocclusions with increased overjet. Its mechanics involve propelling the mandibular bone using two pistons the patient cannot remove. The so-called bite-jumping keeps the mandible in a more anterior position for a variable period, usually at least 6 months. This appliance does not inhibit joint functions and movements, although there are scientific papers in the literature investigating whether this appliance can lead to temporomandibular disorders...
