The direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a technique popular among some arthroplasty surgeons. There is currently a paucity of data regarding reasons for failure of THA using the DAA. The authors conducted a retrospective review of prospectively collected data on 56 patients who underwent revision THA at their institution after failing primary THA that was performed through a DAA either at their institution (n=8) or elsewhere (n=48) from January 1, 2010, to June 1, 2017. Patients were grouped by modes of failure and compared using patient characteristics, surgical factors, and radiographic outcomes...

BACKGROUND: Achilles tendinitis is one of the commonest injuries that happen to skaters. Roller skates traditionally have four wheels onto axles, one under the ball of the foot and one under the heel. Skaters have to maintain a closed kinematics chain which involves continuous trunk and hip flexion along with knee flexion and ankle dorsiflexion. It creates angular tension and strain in the muscles and tendons which can lead to different types of musculotendinous injuries. As not many studies has not been done on the prospect in India this study was done with a objective to compare the effect eccentric exercise and isometric exercise on Achilles tendinitis for skaters...

Purpose: To determine the prevalence of incidental findings on sacroiliac (SI) joint MRI in children clinically suspected of Juvenile Spondyloarthritis (JSpA). Methods: In this retrospective multi-center study of 540 children clinically suspected of JSpA who underwent MRI of SI joints from February 2012 to May 2018, the prevalence of sacroiliitis and other incidental findings was recorded. Results: In 106/540 (20 %) children MRI features of sacroiliitis were present...

BACKGROUND: Iliopsoas tendinitis is a known source of extra-articular hip pain and it has been shown to be a common cause of continued hip pain following total hip arthroplasty. While iliopsoas tendinitis after hip arthroscopy is a well-known phenomenon amongst hip arthroscopists, its presentation, course, and treatment has yet to be elucidated. METHODS: An IRB-approved chart review was performed of patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) between March 2015 and July 2017...

Abductor tendon tears are one of the common causes of recalcitrant laterally based hip pain and dysfunction. In most cases, abductor tendon tears are associated with chronic nontraumatic tearing of the gluteus medius tendon. Restoring abductor function of the hip by primary repair of the gluteus medius tendon has been reported to have good and excellent outcomes. However, primary repair might not be as effective for chronic detachment of the gluteus medius tendon with a wide separation from the femoral footprint or severe tendon loss...

Calcific tendinitis occurs frequently in shoulder and hip region. Its occurrence in elbow joint is frequently misdiagnosed because of its rare incidence and similar clinical presentation with other acute conditions of elbow like trauma, infection and tennis elbow. Characteristic symptoms of this condition are acute onset of pain, tenderness and swelling on the lateral aspect the elbow. Plain Radiograph is the primary modality to distinguish and evaluate this condition. Awareness and familiarity with this condition helps in early diagnosis and avoids unnecessary treatments and biopsy as this condition is self-limited...

The iliofemoral ligament, which plays an important role in hip joint stability, is formed on the anterosuperior region of the hip joint capsule. Although the tendon and deep aponeurosis of the gluteus minimus and iliopsoas are partly connected to the same region of the capsule, the precise location of the connections between the joint capsule and the tendons and deep aponeuroses remains unclear. The locations of the tendinous and aponeurotic connections with the joint capsule may clarify whether the iliofemoral ligament can be regarded as the dynamic stabilizer...

PURPOSE: The aim of this prospective study was to perform a clinical and radiologic evaluation of patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty (THA). The hypothesis is that there is a correlation between the pre-operative degeneration state of the gluteal muscle-tendinous unit and the clinical outcome in terms of functional recovery. METHODS: Fifty-five patients have met inclusion criteria. All patients included in the sample were subjected to clinical evaluation...

BACKGROUND: Calcific tendinopathy denotes calcific deposits in a specific tendon. It is also known as calcifying tendinitis, calcifying periarticulitis, or periarticular apatite deposition disease. Recently, extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has been reported to be effective in relieving and treating pain in calcific tendinopathy. The purpose of this study was to determine and explore factors (age, sex, anthropometry, running and injury/pain history, tendon gross morphology, neovascularization, ankle range of motion, and ankle plantarflexor muscle endurance) related to intra-tendinous morphological alterations of the Achilles tendon in runners. An intra-tendinous morphological change was defined as collagen fiber disorganization detected by a low peak spatial frequency radius (PSFR) obtained from spatial frequency analysis (SFA) techniques in sonography...

Data on elite gymnast injuries outside North America is sparse. We report the injuries recorded over a period of 10 years in 156 Greek elite male and female gymnasts. A total of 2390 injuries were reported for a rate of 1,5 new injuries per year per athlete. Most commonly affected areas were the hip (18.5%), the ankle (16.5%), the lumbar spine (16%) and the foot (16%). The most frequent diagnosis was tendinitis (32%), followed by low back pain (20%), and sprains (12%). Fifteen athletes (9%) sustained serious injuries that required surgery...

INTRODUCTION: Identifying the source of pain is paramount for determining appropriate treatment and ensuring successful outcome in terms of management and relief of pain. The difficulty is that each surgeon has his or her own way of seeing the problem, and there is no consensus for the evaluation of these patients. The study hypothesis was that it is possible to find the cause of the pain in most cases. PATIENTS AND METHODS: All patients consulting for unexplained painful hip arthroplasty were included and followed a decision tree to assess the cause of the pain...

Arthroscopic IFL is performed if the snapping is unresponsive to conservative treatment1,2 . Description: Hip arthroscopy is performed with the patient in the supine position on a traction table. Muscle injuries of the hip and thigh are a highly relevant issue in competitive sports imaging. The gold standard in diagnostic imaging of muscle injuries is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Radiologists need to be familiar with typical MRI findings in order to accurately detect and classify muscle injuries. Proper interpretation of the findings is crucial, especially in elite athletes. In soccer players, muscle injuries of the hip and thigh are the most common reason for missing a game. The present pictorial review deals with the diagnostic assessment, especially MRI, of muscle injuries of the hip and thigh...

BACKGROUND: Gluteus medius tears are a common hip disorder. Despite this, the etiology of these tears and the anatomical background of the gluteus medius tendon remain unclear. This study aimed to clarify the characteristics of the gluteus medius tendon. We hypothesized that the tendinous portions of the gluteus medius have a nonuniform structure contributing to the tear etiology. METHODS: Twenty-five hips from 15 Japanese cadavers were analyzed. Twenty-one of the hips were analyzed macroscopically, and the other 4 were analyzed histologically...
