A 22-year-old woman presented with abdominal pain for 12 days. On examination, the abdomen was slightly distended and painful to palpation in the right flank. Subsequent abdominal imaging showed inflammation in the right iliac fossa, retroperitoneal air pockets with inflammation, and signs of pneumomediastinum. Exploratory laparotomy revealed a perforated retrocaecal appendix with abscess extending to the retroperitoneum. Surgical intervention involved a right hemicolectomy followed by end-to-side anastomosis of the ileum to the transverse colon...

We have shown how the analysis of the angiotomography reconstruction through OsiriX program has assisted in endovascular perioperative programming. We presented its application in situations when an unexpected existence of metallic overlapping artifact (orthopedic osteosynthesis) compromised the adequate visualization of the arterial lesion during the procedure. Through manipulation upon OsiriX software, with assistance of preview under virtual fluoroscopy, it was possible to obtain the angles that would avoid this juxtaposition...

INTRODUCTION: In the past few years, the increase of endovascular surgeons' interest on tomography image edition through softwares is marked specially when it concerns to its use on preoperatory study for endovascular aneurysm repair. It is presumed that the bigger the number of informations extracted from the tomography exam and its three-dimensional reconstruction, the smaller is the need of patient's exposure to contrast, as well as the its exposure and the surgical team to radiation...

INTRODUCTION: Endovascular aneurysm repair requires the precise deployment of the graft. In order to achieve accurate positioning, the anatomical and morphological characteristics of the aorta and its branches is mandatory. Software that perform three dimensional reformatting of multislice tomographic images, allow for the study of the whole aorto-iliac axis and the perpendicular visualization of the origin of the renal arteries. The correct length of the proximal neck can be evaluated and adequate graft fixation and sealing may be foreseen...

The dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) is involved in the control of several physiological functions, including nociceptive modulation. This nucleus is one of the main sources of serotonin to the CNS and neuromodulators such as opioids and GABA may be are important for its release. This study evaluated the influence of serotonergic, GABAergic and opioidergic stimulation, as well as their interactions in the DRN, on vocalization nociceptive response during a peripheral noxious stimulus application in guinea pigs. Morphine (1...

Evidence corroborates the role of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) in the modulation of cognitive and emotional functions. Its involvement in the motivational-affective component of pain has been widely investigated using different methods to elucidate the specific role of different neurotransmitter systems. We used the peripheral noxious stimulus-induced vocalization algesimetric test to verify glutamatergic and GABAergic neurotransmission in the guinea pig ACC. Microinjection of homocysteic acid (DLH; 30 nmol) in the left guinea pig ACC increased the amplitude of vocalizations (pronociception) compared to controls injected with saline...

Tonic immobility (TI) is an innate defensive behavior that can be elicited by physical restriction and postural inversion and is characterized by a profound and temporary state of akinesis. Our previous studies demonstrated that the stimulation of serotonin receptors in the dorsal raphe nucleus (DRN) appears to be biphasic during TI responses in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). Serotonin released by the DRN modulates behavioral responses and its release can occur through the action of different neurotransmitter systems, including the opioidergic and GABAergic systems...

In this paper, we apply an immune-inspired approach to design ensembles of heterogeneous neural networks for classification problems. Our proposal, called Bayesian artificial immune system, is an estimation of distribution algorithm that replaces the traditional mutation and cloning operators with a probabilistic model, more specifically a Bayesian network, representing the joint distribution of promising solutions. Among the additional attributes provided by the Bayesian framework inserted into an immune-inspired search algorithm are the automatic control of the population size along the search and the inherent ability to promote and preserve diversity among the candidate solutions...

Galling arthropods create plant structures inside which they find shelter. Factors acting on galler diversity are still being discussed, with this fauna considered more diverse in xeric than mesic environments (higrothermic stress hypothesis, HSH), and also in more plant diverse sites. Here we compare galler abundance (N), equitability (E), species richness (S) and composition between adjacent restinga (xeric) and swamp forests (mesic) in Parque Estadual de Itapeva (29°21' S, 49°45' W), Rio Grande do Sul, southern Brazil...

Tonic immobility (TI) is an innate defensive behavior characterized by a state of physical inactivity and diminished responsiveness to environmental stimuli. Behavioral adaptations to changes in the external and internal milieu involve complex neuronal network activity and a large number of chemical neurotransmitters. The TI response is thought to be influenced by serotonin (5-HT) activity in the central nervous system (CNS) of vertebrates, but the neuronal groups involved in the mechanisms underlying this behavior are poorly understood...

In the present work we measured blood levels of total homocysteine ((t)Hcy), vitamin B(12) and folic acid in patients with Parkinson s disease (PD) and in age-matched controls and searched for possible associations between these levels with smoking, alcohol consumption, L-DOPA treatment and disease duration in PD patients. We initially observed that plasma (t)Hcy levels were increased by around 30 % in patients affected by PD compared to controls. Linear correlation, multiple regression and comparative analyses revealed that the major determinant of the increased plasma concentrations of (t)Hcy in PD patients was folic acid deficiency, whereas in controls (t)Hcy levels were mainly determined by plasma vitamin B(12) concentrations...

Primary tumors of the heart are not common. However, metastatic neoplasms affecting the heart are more commonly found. Postmortem studies have shown that some tumors have reported secondary cardiac implants to be over 50%. Such involvement is to be taken into account for patients with a history of neoplasm and who present conduction disorders, murmur, cardiomegaly or arrhythmia. This is to report the case of a 39-year-old man who had been referred due to fatigue and dyspnea on effort. Echocardiogram evidence showed large tumoral mass in right ventricle...

Many hypotheses have been proposed to explain diversity patterns of galling insects. However, there are contradictory evidences on the evolutionary and ecological factors responsible for the trends. Furthermore, questions such as arthropod seasonality, sampling sufficiency and sampling team experience have been almost ignored. This study records galling arthropod diversity while paying attention to these questions. Seasonal sampling of galling arthropods and host plants were conducted in a humid subtropical forest of southern Brazil...

Huntington's disease (HD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by involuntary choreiform movements, neuropsychiatric disturbances and cognitive decline. The hyperkinetic phenomenology has commonly been attributed to a disturbance of the basal ganglia function, mainly the neostriatum, but its pathophysiology mechanisms remain unclear. Activity-dependent long-term changes in synaptic efficacy, such as long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), are widely considered to be the cellular models for acquisition and storage of information in neuronal networks...
