Enhanced cellular therapy has emerged as a novel concept following the basis of cellular therapy. This treatment modality applied drugs or biotechnology to directly enhance or genetically modify cells to enhance the efficacy of adoptive cellular therapy (ACT). Drugs or biotechnology that enhance the killing ability of immune cells include immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) / antibody drugs, small molecule inhibitors, immunomodulatory factors, proteolysis targeting chimera (PROTAC), oncolytic virus (OV), etc...

BACKGROUND: Patients with mood disorders usually require repeated and prolonged hospitalization, resulting in a heavy burden on healthcare resources. This study aims to identify variables associated with length of stay(LOS) of repeatedly hospitalized patients with mood disorders and to provide information for optimizing psychiatry management and healthcare resource allocation. METHODS: Electronic medical records (EMRs) of repeatedly hospitalized patients with mood disorders from January 2010 to December 2018 were collected and retrospectively analyzed...

BACKGROUND: Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) was legalized in Canada in 2016 and amended in 2021. At the time that this study was conducted, the federal government was considering expanding the eligibility criteria to include patients whose death was not reasonably foreseeable. The purpose of this study was to better understand rural healthcare professionals' experiences with assisted dying set against the backdrop of legislative expansion. METHODS: A qualitative exploratory study was undertaken with general rural practice physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, ethicists, patients, and patient families in rural Southern Alberta, Canada...

BACKGROUND: Many university students self-harm but few receive support. Smartphone apps have been identified as acceptable sources of support for students who self-harm, but the use of supportive self-harm apps is yet to be explored in this population. OBJECTIVE: This study sought to explore the acceptability and safety of a specific app (BlueIce) for university students who self-harm. METHODS: This was an exploratory, mixed methods study with 15 university students attending university well-being services with self-harming thoughts and/or behaviours...

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous disorder. To reduce heterogeneity, large-scale genome-wide association studies have recently identified genome-wide significant loci associated with seven MDD subtypes. However, it was unclear in which tissues the genes near those loci are specifically expressed. We investigated whether genes related to specific MDD subtypes would be preferably expressed in a specific tissue. At 14 novel subtype-specific loci related to seven MDD subtypes-(1) non-atypical-like features MDD, (2) early-onset MDD, (3) recurrent MDD, (4) MDD with suicidal thoughts, (5) MDD without suicidal thoughts, (6) MDD with moderate impairment, and (7) postpartum depression, we investigated whether 22 genome-wide significant genetic variant-mapped genes were tissue-specifically expressed in brain, female reproductive, male specific, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, or urinary tissues in the Genotype-Tissue Expression (GTEx) subjects (n ≤ 948)...

Due to the limitations of autologous chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells, alternative sources of cellular immunotherapy, including CAR macrophages, are emerging for solid tumors. Human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) offer an unlimited source for immune cell generation. Here, we develop human iPSC-derived CAR macrophages targeting prostate stem cell antigen (PSCA) (CAR-iMacs), which express membrane-bound interleukin (IL)-15 and truncated epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) for immune cell activation and a suicide switch, respectively...

The relationship between the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and suicide risk in patients with mental disorders remains controversial. We conducted a network meta-analysis to examine the effects of SSRIs on suicide risk in patients with mental disorders. A comprehensive search was conducted across PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CENTRAL, Wanfang Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure for articles published until December 19, 2023. The main outcomes were suicidal ideation and instances of suicidal behavior...

Extended suicide, a specific type of homicide-suicide event, has severe social consequences yet remains lacking systematic research. This retrospective study investigated 51 cases of extended suicide involving mental disorders in central China with aim of better understanding risk factors for such events and guiding prevention strategies. Over an 8-year period from 2015 to 2022, cases were collected from forensic institutions, and demographic characteristics, case details, and psychiatric data were recorded...

Psychiatric diagnosis rates in suicide decedents appear higher in European ancestry populations compared with East Asians. Shared genetic components exist between major depressive disorder (MDD)/schizophrenia (SCZ) and suicide, but no study has compared these shared polygenic architectures between Europeans and East Asians. We compared polygenic risk scores (PRSs) for MDD/SCZ determined from large data sets specific to each ancestry in European and East Asian suicide decedent samples. MDD/SCZ PRSs appeared more prominent in European suicides compared with Japanese suicides...

BACKGROUND: Serious mental illness (SMI) is more common among adults in correctional settings than in the general population. No standard exists for SMI screening across correctional settings; SMI therefore often goes undetected in these facilities. Placing individuals with unidentified SMI who are incarcerated in general population cells increases their risk for self-harming behaviors, suicide, and for being victims or perpetrators of exploitation and violence. METHODS: This article describes a quantitative, descriptive study conducted to evaluate the use of the Brief Jail Mental Health Screen (BJMHS) tool to screen for possible SMI among individuals in a jail setting...

This study reports a case of a female in her 50s with an alleged history of ingestion of toilet cleaner an empty bottle of which was found together with a suicide note at the incident site. During the autopsy, the forensic expert made an intriguing observation regarding the dispersion of ingested acid to other organs without gastric perforation...

Although suicide rates are stable or decreasing among White communities, rates are increasing among Black communities, a trend that appears to be disproportionately affecting Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and queer (LGBQ) people. To understand the structural drivers and mechanisms of these trends, we examined associations between U.S. state-level racist and heterosexist criminal legal policies and policing, discrimination, and suicidality among White and Black, heterosexual and LGBQ, communities. This integrative review expands on the work of Kramer et al. (2020), by reviewing studies that utilized the Interpersonal Needs Questionnaire (INQ) to examine the interpersonal constructs (thwarted belongingness and perceived burdensomeness) of the Interpersonal Theory of Suicide (ITS) to understand suicidal thoughts and behaviors among service members and Veterans with combat experience. Very few studies (n = 9) in the literature were identified, however important relationships were revealed between combat exposure/experiences, thwarted belongingness, perceived burdensomeness, and suicidal thoughts and behaviors among military samples...

UNLABELLED: WHAT IS KNOWN ON THE SUBJECT?: According to recent estimates, 10.4% of adults are patients with substance abuse, which is almost double the global rate. Rural areas are typically marginalized, compounded by a lack of access to mental health care, creating a startling disparity in suffering from drug use issues among rural cohorts. WHAT THE PAPER ADDS TO EXISTING KNOWLEDGE?: Drawing on data from a descriptive comparative design would provide a distinctive picture related to the similarities and/or differences in relation to craving and how it affects perceived stigma and suicidal risk among patients using old versus novel psychoactive substances...
