We report two sisters with a new syndrome of simplified gyral pattern, normal head circumference at birth but with subsequent development of microcephaly, intractable seizures, and early death. Dysmorphic features included coarse face, hypertrichosis, short nose, paranasal widening, long philtrum, short neck, upper limb micromelia, single transverse palmar lines, and clasp thumbs. The proband had repeated convulsions from shortly after birth and she required continuous artificial ventilation. Neurological examination showed absent sucking, rooting, Moro and grasping reflexes...

In addition to light flux changes, it is well established that other stimulus attributes such as colour, spatial structure or movement can also cause a transient constriction of the pupil, even when the onset of the stimulus causes a net decrease in light flux level on the retina. Although experimental findings in human subjects with postgeniculate lesions show that the generation of such responses must involve the processing of stimulus attributes in extrastriate areas of the cortex, little is known about the site of integration of cortical signals into the pupillomotor pathway...

We evaluated developmental change of the reaction time of the Moro reflex from birth to three months of age using a three-dimensional motion analysis system (ToMoCo-VM:Tousou system). The reaction time was the shortest in one-month-old babies and became successively prolonged in two and three-month-old babies, showing a U-shaped pattern. The three phase of the Moro reflex, as defined by McGraw, changed with advancing age. The reaction time changed monthly. At the same monthly age, the reaction time was the same irrespective of the phase...

We describe a pedigree in which eight individuals presented with a non-progressive disorder with onset between the ages of 12 and 50 years. It was characterized by predominantly distal, semi-continuous rhythmic myoclonus (all patients), generalized tonic-clonic seizures (all patients) and complex partial seizures (three patients). Most individuals had rarely suffered seizures and had a normal cognitive level, but three individuals with intractable seizures had mild mental retardation. The pattern of inheritance was autosomal dominant with high penetrance...

A-37-year-old woman in shock condition was transferred to our hospital after cardiopulmonary resuscitation for ventricular fibrillation. She was unconscious and suspected of suffering ischemic brain damage, with pathologic reflexes and weak brain stem reflexes. Brain CT scan showed cerebral edema without hemorrhage or infarction and an electroencephalograph revealed slow alpha-theta waves. Chest CT scan and echocardiogram showed ascending aortic aneurysm with sever aortic regurgitation. An emergent operation was performed for progression of heart failure...

RATIONALE: Schizophrenic patients typically have impaired startle habituation (SH) and prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex (PPI). PPI can be disrupted in rats by psychomimetics, and drug-induced reversal of this deficit is considered to predict potential antipsychotic properties. Certain strains of mice, such as C57BL/6J, naturally display poor PPI. OBJECTIVE: To test whether mice spontaneously showing low levels of PPI might prove a useful tool for detecting novel antipsychotics...

INTRODUCTION: Auditory neuropathy is a type of neurosensorial hypoacusis that produces significant impairment in language comprehension. Etiologically, this neuropathy has been related to perinatal hypoxia, hyperbilirubinemia, metabolic disorders and degenerative entities that affect the auditory pathway. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report five children with this disorder. Two of the children were referred for otorhinolaryngeal assessment after failing the neonatal hearing screening and one was referred because of a history of perinatal hypoxia...

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether gender-specific physiologic differences are present at birth and can be a basis for gender-specific vulnerability to developmental disorders in males. We report on three studies of male-female physiologic and structural differences in neonates and their relevance to observed differences in the incidence of developmental disorders in males. METHODS: Study I: 56 neonates were examined for cardiac reactivity to the Moro reflex. Study II: 863 neonates' basic anthropometric data were examined to demonstrate gender-specific differences in body proportions as a possible basis for psychophysiologic differences...

This prospective study emphasizes the importance of an early physical finding of neonatal clavicular fracture, termed "the palpable spongy mass sign." Of the 1,661 term neonates examined at our tertiary center over a 20-month period, 24 had clinical signs of a clavicular fracture. In 22 of the 24 neonates, the fractures were documented by positive radiographs or callus formation. None of the fractures was recognized because of an asymmetric Moro reflex, visible swelling, or bruising. The palpable spongy mass was present in 18 of the 22 fractures (82%), crepitus in 10 (45%), angulation deformity in two (9%), and localized tenderness in one (5%)...

The combination of transient otoacoustic emissions (TOAE) and auditory brainstem responses (ABR) permits us to identify a group of patients with auditory neuropathy. The clinical and therapeutic aspects of these patients are a challenge for otological practice. The patients underwent ENT, neurological, and otological examination using audiometry, tympanometry, stapedial reflex, OAE, or ABR, depending on the patient. TOAE and tympanograms were normal in all cases. The stapedial reflex and ABR were absent in all cases...

A four month-old male infant was noted to have had severe corneal opacity since birth. Buphthalmos, increased intraocular pressure and corneal opacity with neovascularization were noted during physical examination. There was neither dysmorphic face nor hirsutism and the liver and spleen were impalpable. In addition, hypotonia, poor head control, and absence of Moro and grasping reflexes were also noted. There was no evidence of congenital infection by TORCH study. Tests of both urine and plasma amino acids were within normal limits...

BACKGROUND: Focal intracranial infections caused by Salmonella species are uncommon. The authors report a case of multiple brain abscesses caused by Salmonella typhi. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 2-month-old girl was admitted to the hospital because of diarrhea, vomiting, fever, and poor feeding. Neurological examination revealed cervical hyperextension and absence of sucking and Moro reflexes. During the next 20 hours she developed complex partial seizures with secondary generalization and alternated irritability with drowsiness...

Head turning after release from the midline and the Moro response to a full-body drop in 15 full-term newborns lying supine on a custom-built platform was studied. While the lateral bias for head turning was not as pronounced as for the Moro response, it was still assumed in the ratio of 2 (right):1 (left) as predicted by Previc (1991). Onset latency and time-to-peak acceleration were both significantly shorter in the right arm during the initial phase of the Moro response. For both measures, this right arm bias persisted over four consecutive elicitations in most infants...

We describe the application of a revised version of the Dubowitz neurologic examination of the newborn in 224 low-risk, term newborn infants. The method has been updated by eliminating less useful items and including new items evaluating general movements and patterns of distribution of tone. An optimality score is included to make the evaluation more quantitative and for comparison with sequential examinations with neurophysiologic and imaging findings. The score is based on the distribution of the scores for each item in the population of low-risk term infants...

The period of the UM therapy was 5 days in one case with spastic CP and 10 days in another case with rigo-spastic CP. They showed the remarkable reduction of abnormal muscle tone and interesting phenomena such as postural changes of extremities and changes of some primitive reflexes. First, peculiar postures of treated extremities appeared on the first day of the UM therapy, associated with the reducing muscle tone of extremities only in the treated side...
