There is evidence of a positive association between per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) and cholesterol levels in human plasma, which may be due to common reabsorption of PFASs and bile acids (BAs) in the gut. Here we report development and validation of a method that allows simultaneous, quantitative determination of PFASs and BAs in plasma, using 150 μL or 20 μL of sample. The method involves protein precipitation using 96-well plates. The instrumental analysis was performed with ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS), using reverse-phase chromatography, with the ion source operated in negative electrospray mode...

AIM: Children frequently ingest coins (generally with minimal reported side effects); however, the ingestion of other items has been subject to less academic study. Parental concern regarding ingestion applies across a range of materials. In this study, we aimed to determine typical transit times for another commonly swallowed object: a Lego figurine head. METHODS: Six paediatric health-care professionals were recruited to swallow a Lego head. Previous gastrointestinal surgery, inability to ingest foreign objects and aversion to searching through faecal matter were all exclusion criteria...

The effect of medication is always a balance between their beneficial effects and any adverse reactions they might elicit. The main risk for adverse drug events {ADEs) is polypharmacy, which is the simultaneous use of multiple drugs. This often applies to older patients, who suffer from multiple diseases and therefore take multiple medications. Thus, itis not surprising, that ADEs are frequention older patients and account up to 16% of emergency visits. It is still under discussion, whether age is an independent risk factor for ADEs...

In this study, S(2-) ions were found to enhance the fluorescence of cysteine-capped Cu nanoclusters (Cu NCs). High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX) measurements, zeta potential and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements demonstrated that the S(2-) ion-induced aggregation of the Cu NCs contributed to the fluorescence enhancement of the dispersed Cu NCs. Based on these findings, a highly selective fluorescent probe was developed for the determination of H2S using the S(2-) ion-enhanced fluorescence of the as-prepared Cu NCs...

Fiction (i.e. novels, short stories, and movies) provides an opportunity for imaginative moral reflection and can serve as a basis for moral argument. Narratives play a role in moral reasoning because they are exemplars as well as tests. Those who care for sick people, should be interested in patient's and literary stories. Exploring the representation of gastroenterological ailments in fiction gives insight in the experience of undergoing colonoscopy, farting, pain, the borders of intimacy, hygiene and the lack of it, taboos and the doctor-patient-relationship...

OBJECTIVE: To explore an optimum method on postoperative recovery of general-anesthesia gynecological laparoscopic surgery. METHODS: One hundred and twenty cases of gynecological laparoscopic surgery were randomly divided into three groups, 40 cases in each one. The sensitive points of bilateral Shenmen (TF4), Zigong (TF2), Wei (CO4), Dachang (CO7) and so on were selected in all three groups one night before the surgery. The sticking with magnetic beads was applied in the group A...

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of castration on cell death rate of the adult rat prostates and to evaluate the benefic action of alpha tocopherol supplementation to avoid apoptosis post-orchiectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty male Wistar rats weighing 250-300g were divided into three groups: group I - they were subjected to bilateral orchiectomy and sacrificed eight weeks after the procedure; group II - subjected to bilateral orchiectomy and alpha-tocopherol supplementation for four weeks preceding the procedure; and group III - subjected to bilateral orchiectomy and alpha-tocopherol supplementation for four weeks preceding the procedure and for eight weeks afterwards...

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge, attitudes, and utilization of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) of primary health care (PHC) physicians in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A crosssectional study including all physicians working at PHC centers in the Riyadh region, Saudi Arabia, was carried out from the beginning of April 2010 to the end of June 2010. Using a self-administered questionnaire, 1,113 physicians answered questions regarding their socio-demographic data, and knowledge, attitudes and utilization of CAM...

OBJECTIVE: To construct RNAi recombinant adenoviral expressive vectors specific to glycogen synthase kinase-3beta (GSK-3beta) and to observe its gene knockdown effect on the expression of GSK-3beta, and to explore the effect of Wnt/beta-catenin pathway on the proliferation of human thyrocytes using the RNAi adenovirus vector. METHODS: An adenovirus plasmid that contained the RNAi cassette targeting the GSK-3beta gene was constructed by homologous recombination and cloning techniques, transfected into human embryo kidney (HEK) 293A cells to product adenovirus, and then was used to infect the HEK293A cells to amplify the adenoviral stock...

The authors present surgical therapy of liposarcoma in retroperitoneum. These mesenchymal tumors occur rarely in the population. The strategy for therapy requires determination of the relations to adjacent organs on the basis of precise preoperation examination of the patient. Surgery is considered as the basic therapy, provided radical extirpation of the tumor is possible. Our case report describes a huge liposarcoma in retroperitoneum with histology evolving from myxoid to low differentiated liposarcoma of retroperitoneum...

This paper presents a set of methods for helping in the analysis of signals with particular features that admit a symbolic description. The methodology is based on a general discrete model for a symbolic processing subsystem, which is fuzzyfied by means of a fuzzy inference system. In this framework a number of design problems have been approached. The curse of dimensionality problem and the specification of adequate membership functions are the main ones. In addition, other strategies, which make the design process simpler and more robust, are introduced...
