Cryptococcus neoformans is the second major cause of death in patients with HIV. During a latent infection, this pathogenic fungus survives in the host for years without causing symptoms of active disease. Upon favorable conditions, such as immunosuppression due to HIV infection, or other conditions (steroid use or organ transplantation), the yeast may reactivate and cause active cryptococcosis. Hence, dormancy is an important phase in the pathogenesis of C. neoformans. Additionally, C. neoformans also persists during antifungal treatment and causes disease recurrence, which is a major medical problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries...

BACKGROUND: Awake craniotomy (AC) is recommended for the resection of tumors in eloquent areas. It is traditionally performed under monitored anesthesia care (MAC), which relies on hypnotics and opioids. Hypnosis-assisted AC (HAAC) is an emerging technique that aims to provide psychological support while reducing the need for pharmacological sedation and analgesia. We aimed to compare the characteristics and outcomes of patients who underwent AC under HAAC or MAC. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical, anesthetic, surgical, and neuropsychological data of patients who underwent awake surgical resection of eloquent brain tumors under HAAC or MAC...

BACKGROUND: Standard continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) metrics: mean glucose, standard deviation, coefficient of variation, and time in range, fail to capture the shape of variability in the CGM time series. This information could facilitate improved diabetes management. METHODS: We analyzed CGM data from 141 adults with type 2 diabetes in the Hyperglycemic Profiles in Obstructive Sleep Apnea (HYPNOS) trial. Participants in HYPNOS wore CGM sensors for up to two weeks at two time points, three months apart...

Transvaginal oocyte retrieval is an outpatient procedure performed under local anaesthesia. Hypno-analgesia could be effective in managing comfort during this procedure. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a virtual reality headset as an adjunct to local anaesthesia in managing nociception during oocyte retrieval. This was a prospective, randomized single-centre study including patients undergoing oocyte retrieval under local anaesthesia. Patients were randomly assigned to the intervention group (virtual reality headset + local anaesthesia) or the control group (local anaesthesia)...

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of hypno-breastfeeding (HB) and solution-focused psychoeducation (SFP) on breastfeeding motivation and insufficient milk perception in mothers. It is a randomized controlled experimental study. The sample of the study consisted of 90 women who met the inclusion criteria. Women in the intervention groups had increased motivation to breastfeed and decreased perception of insufficient milk. Those in the SFP group had significantly lower midwife support scores than the HB group...

Although switching to antipsychotic monotherapy improves patient outcomes in schizophrenia, antipsychotic deprescribing is rarely performed and its use varies between countries, as do psychotropic prescribing patterns. This study aimed to determine factors associated with antipsychotic deprescribing at discharge after a psychiatric hospitalisation and to compare psychotropic prescribing patterns between Belgium and Québec, Canada. Data on adult inpatients with schizophrenia were collected retrospectively in seven hospitals...

Electroencephalography (EEG) continues to be a pivotal investigation in children with epilepsy, providing diagnostic evidence and supporting syndromic classification. In the pediatric population, electroencephalographic recordings are frequently performed during sleep, since this procedure reduces the number of artifacts and activates epileptiform abnormalities. To date, no shared guidelines are available for sleep induction in EEG. Among the interventions used in the clinical setting, melatonin and sleep deprivation represent the most used methods...

METHODS: Cross-sectional analysis in single center cohort of PLWH. Open source in-situ environmental sensor hardware continues to expand across the globe for a variety of applications. Sensor-management systems typically perform three fundamental tasks: sample sensors at a specified time or period, save data onto retrievable media, and switch power to components on and off in between sample cycles to conserve battery energy and increase field operation time. These tasks are commonly accomplished through integrating separate off-the-shelf components into the desired system such as: power relays, SD card hardware, Real-Time Clocks (RTCs), and coin cell batteries...

Opium Poppy ( Papaver somniferum L.) is considered as one of the earliest medicinal plants known to mankind. Derived from the Greek name "opos" meaning juice, referring to its psychotropic latex, the plant was known and extensively used since Antiquity during religious rituals and for Medical purposes, mainly as hypnotic and pain reliever agent. In Cretan folk medicine it was recommended along with other poppies until the early 20th century to induce children sedation, by the name: " Hypnos " meaning sleep.

The treatment of functional neurological disorder (FND), previously referred to as conversion disorder, can be challenging. Despite these challenges and with increased understanding of this condition, new treatment options are emerging. One such treatment is hypnosis, which has a long history of use in the treatment of FND. Jean-Martin Charcot, considered by many to be the father of modern neurology, used therapeutic hypnosis as early as the 19th century. In this report, we discuss the novel use of a hypno-anesthetic technique (the magic glove) for treatment of FND presenting as diplegia...

Modern society is reviving the practice of aromatherapy, and lavender is reported being the most worldwide purchased plant for essential oil (EO) extraction. Since recent studies reported cognitive enhancing effects of lavender besides the hypno-inducing effects, a literature review is needed. Considering EO quality and diffusion devices, we conducted a systematic review on the effects of lavender EO inhalation on arousal, attention and memory in healthy subjects. Starting from this new multidisciplinary perspective, cognitive effects were reviewed to link outcomes to effective and reproducible protocols...
