There are many types of ovarian tumors, and these different types often form cystic masses with a similar appearance, which can make their differentiation difficult. However, with the exclusion of rare ovarian tumors, the number of ovarian tumors encountered in daily practice is somewhat fixed. It goes without saying that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is useful for differentiating ovarian tumors. In this review, we summarize the differential diagnoses for each of the five types of MRI findings commonly encountered in daily practice...

Ovarian neoplasms are categorized based on histopathologic features into epithelial surface cell tumors, germ cell tumors (teratomas), sex cord-stromal tumors, and metastases. Teratomas are the most common ovarian germ cell neoplasms. They are generally slow-growing lesions and can get fairly large before becoming symptomatic. The lesions are often incidentally discovered during imaging for other diagnostic purposes. Complications are uncommon but occur more commonly with larger lesions and include torsion, malignant degeneration, rupture, and rarely infection...

INTRODUCTION: Anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis is a form of encephalitis previously associated with dermoid tumors. However, most studies in the literature evaluating the disease are case reports and small patient cohorts, limiting robust statistical analysis. Here, we demonstrate predictors of anti-NMDAR encephalitis in a large cohort of US patients. METHODS: We used the 2016 National Inpatient Sample (NIS) to identify a cohort of 24,270 admitted for an ovarian dermoid tumor...

Background: SO (Struma ovarii) is a rare form of ovarian teratoma which originates from ovarian dermoid cysts. Due to the rarity of this disease, relevant studies might not be sufficiently documented, especially cases with hyperthyroidism and multiple metastases. Case Presentation: A 40-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital due to management of early pregnancy along with a recurrent abdominal and pelvic mass. Contrast-enhanced CT images showed an irregular mass (10.7 × 8.6 × 12.8 cm) located in the right side from the hypogastrium to the pelvic cavity and another mass (3...

Extragonadal teratoma of the omentum is a rare clinical entity. We report a case of a large omental teratoma in a postmenopausal woman who presented with 3 days history of right groin pain. She was previously diagnosed with right ovarian teratoma in 2013 but declined surgical intervention. Laparoscopy performed for suspected ovarian cyst torsion discovered a large omental teratoma measuring approximately 11 cm × 9 cm with the concurrent absence of the right fallopian tube and ovary. The mass was removed successfully via laparoscopic approach...

Teratomas of the ovary rarely present as inguinal hernias. Teratomas most commonly occur in the gonads or along with midline structures. Although the majority are asymptomatic, complications such as spontaneous rupture are known to occur. We present a previously unreported case of a ruptured ovarian teratoma presenting as an irreducible inguinal hernia. The patient underwent an open exploratory laparotomy with left oophorectomy, and the right inguinal hernia was repaired in the same setting with a separate inguinal incision...

Very few cases of bilateral and recurrent teratomas have been reported. We present the case of a 21-year-old nulliparous female who presented to an outside facility complaining of left flank pain and was found to have bilateral ovarian teratomas. The physician proceeded with a laparotomy. Five years later, the patient presented to our facility complaining of abdominal pain. Imaging revealed a second incidence of bilateral dermoid cysts for which she underwent a bilateral laparoscopic cystectomy. The patient retained her fertility and was able to deliver a newborn 2 years later...

Sebaceous carcinoma is an uncommon primary cutaneous neoplasm which may be associated with mismatch repair (MMR) abnormalities and sometimes with Muir-Torre syndrome. These neoplasms rarely arise in the ovary within a teratoma/ dermoid cyst. We report a sebaceous carcinoma arising in an ovarian teratoma in a 49-yr old (the 14th case reported in the literature) which exhibited loss of expression of MMR proteins MSH2 and MSH6. A germline mutation c.1102C>T was present in exon 7 of the MSH2 gene, the first report of a germline mutation associated with this tumor type...

Ovarian dermoid is a common surgically treatable cause of female infertility. Although the fat component of mature cystic teratoma (MCT) appears hyperechoic on ultrasonography, sometimes it poses a diagnostic challenge to differentiate from a complex ovarian cyst / hemorrhagic cyst. The varied presentation of MCT on ultrasonography is due to varying proportions of components belonging to all three germ cell layers such as epithelium, hair, bone, tooth, and cartilage. This case report describes the high-resolution ultrasonography appearance of MCT in a 48-year-old nulliparous post-menopausal woman and provides an elaborative note on how reliable diagnostic signs of MCT on ultrasonography and prompt recognition of the entity has a favorable outcome on prognosis...

Acute abdominal pain in pregnancy is common and the differential diagnosis is vast. Mature cystic teratomas are rarely the cause of adnexal torsion during pregnancy and can be difficult to diagnose. Timely surgical intervention is required to avoid ovarian infarction. We report a 22-year-old patient presenting with sudden right lower abdominal pain. Imaging including bedside Doppler ultrasonography and MRI were negative for signs of acute ovarian torsion. Despite no definitive imaging findings, due to severe pain, we made the decision for diagnostic multi-port laparoscopic examination with possible oophorectomy...

Mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is a common benign ovarian germ cell tumor. It is more predominantly seen in premenopausal women and contains at least two or more well-differentiated germ cell layers. It is termed a dermoid cyst if the ectodermal tissue is the predominant component. The complications of a dermoid cyst include torsion, malignant degeneration, rupture, and infection. The incidence of a ruptured dermoid cyst is around 1%-2% resulting in chemical aseptic peritonitis from spillage of the cyst contents...
