Four cases of a distinct carcinoma of the thymic gland are presented. The patients were 4 adult males with an age range from 40 to 47 years (mean, 43.5 years). Clinically, all patients presented with non-specific respiratory symptoms. None of the patients had any prior history of head and neck neoplasm or surgery in that anatomic area. Large anterior mediastinal masses were found on diagnostic imaging with concurrent metastatic disease to pleura, lungs, regional lymph nodes and bones. Microscopically, all tumors were composed of a solid proliferation of hyperchromatic, monomorphic small cells with focal cytoplasmic clearing embedded in a fibromyxoid stroma...

OBJECTIVES: To assess whether addition of the salivary gland ultrasonography (SGUS) OMERACT score influences the performance of the 2016 ACR/EULAR classification criteria for Sjögren's disease (SjD) in daily clinical practice. METHODS: Patients visiting the Sjögren Expertise centre in the University Medical Center Groningen for a diagnostic trajectory because of a suspicion of SjD were included. SGUS was performed of both parotid and submandibular glands...

OBJECTIVE: Serum cortisol has long been used in the assessment of disorders of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. The reference interval for cortisol in both serum and saliva depends on the analytical methodology and the population studied; hence, a locally derived population-based reference interval is recommended. To our knowledge, there are no studies on reference interval determination in the study area, raising concerns about the use of reference intervals established in European and North American populations...

c-KIT is an important diagnostic marker in salivary gland tumours and is expressed in most adenoid cystic carcinomas. Histologically similar salivary gland tumours with variable immunohistochemical expression for c-KIT pose a challenge and make diagnostic reliability ambivalent. An electronic search was performed in MEDLINE by PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, Trip, Cochrane Library, and EMBASE up to 31 December 2023, without period restriction. The articles that investigated CD117 or c-KIT in salivary gland tumours were included for review...

CONTEXT.—: Salivary gland (SG) neoplasms (SGNs) display considerable immunophenotypic diversity. A significant proportion of SG carcinomas develop metastases with increased diagnostic difficulty at metastatic sites. Transcriptional repressor GATA binding 1 (TRPS1), a novel immunohistochemical marker for breast cancer, has been found to stain certain SGNs. OBJECTIVE.—: To investigate TRPS1 and SRY-related HMG-box 10 (SOX10) immunoexpression in various SGNs and non-SG carcinomas, head and neck paragangliomas, and head and neck mucosal melanomas...

Periodontal diseases, including gingivitis and periodontitis, are among the most prevalent diseases in humans. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease, characterized by inflammation of the gingiva caused by the accumulation of dental plaque. Salivary diagnostics are becoming increasingly popular due to the variation in saliva composition in response to pathological processes. We used a metabolomics approach to investigate whether a specific saliva metabolic composition could indicate preclinical stage of gingivitis...

Although blood still remains the most commonly utilized medium to detect increased levels of oxidative damage induced by exercise, saliva diagnostics have gained increasing popularity due to their non-invasive nature and athlete-friendly collection process. Given that the contribution of various phases of the menstrual cycle to the levels of oxidative damage may differ, the aim of this study was to evaluate an agreement between salivary and plasmatic levels of lipid peroxidation products in female swimmers in both the follicular (F) and luteal (L) phases of the menstrual cycle at rest and following exercise...

In recent years, salivary metabolome studies have provided new biological information and salivary biomarkers to diagnose different diseases at early stages. The saliva in the oral cavity is influenced by many factors that are reflected in the salivary metabolite profile. Oral microbes can alter the salivary metabolite profile and may express oral inflammation or oral diseases. The released microbial metabolites in the saliva represent the altered biochemical pathways in the oral cavity. This review highlights the oral microbial profile and microbial metabolites released in saliva and its use as a diagnostic biofluid for different oral diseases...

The activity of dental caries, combined with its multifactorial etiology, alters salivary molecule composition. The present systematic review was developed to answer the following question: "Are salivary biomarkers reliable for diagnosis of dental caries?". Following the "Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis" (PRISMA) guidelines, the review was conducted using multiple database research (Medline, Web of Science, and Scopus). Studies performed on healthy subjects with and without dental caries and providing detailed information concerning the clinical diagnosis of caries (Decayed, Missing, Filled Teeth-DMFT and International Caries Detection and Assessment System-ICDAS criteria) were included...

Diagnosing a soft tissue tumor in the head and neck region can be challenging due to its complex anatomy and diverse histological spectrum. This case report highlights the case of a woman who presented with a painless neck lump in the posterior triangle of the neck. Various pathological and imaging studies were suggestive of pleomorphic adenoma, which arises from the left prevertebral space. The patient underwent complete surgical excision via the transcervical approach. Pleomorphic adenoma in the posterior triangle of the neck is extremely rare and causes a diagnostic dilemma in managing soft tissue tumors of the neck...

MicroRNA (miRNA), crucial non-coding RNAs, have emerged as key biomarkers in molecular diagnostics, prognosis, and personalized medicine due to their significant role in gene expression regulation. Salivary miRNA, in particular, stands out for its non-invasive collection method and ease of accessibility, offering promising avenues for the development of point-of-care diagnostics for a spectrum of diseases, including cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, and infectious diseases. Such development promises rapid and precise diagnosis, enabling timely treatment...

In the diagnosis of Sjögren's syndrome the Salivary gland sonography (SGUS) has become established and can lead to a higher specificity of the applicable classification criteria. The OMERACT score is used to objectify the SGUS findings. In laboratory diagnostics, the subspecification of anti-SSA/Ro antibodies, but possibly also new biomarkers, are becoming increasingly important regarding diagnostic safety and the expected manifestations. When it comes to prevention, it has been shown that not only psychological stress, but also cardiovascular risk and the risk of lymphoma allow high-risk patients to be identified more precisely in the future...

IMPORTANCE: Circulating tumor human papillomavirus DNA (ctHPV DNA) has shown potential as a biomarker capable of improving outcomes in patients with HPV-related oropharyngeal (OP) cancer. It can be isolated from plasma or saliva, with the latter offering reduced invasiveness and theoretic reduction of lead time. OBJECTIVE: To perform a systematic review and meta-analysis on the accuracy of salivary ctHPV DNA for detecting HPV-associated OP cancer. BACKGROUND: In 2018, the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) was published, defining a diagnostic categorization scheme. However, this system of classification was criticized due to its suboptimal diagnostic accuracy and low interobserver reliability. For these reasons, the modified Milan system was recently proposed by a few authors claiming it to be more clinically reliable. The present study aimed to analyze the interobserver reliability of MSRSGC and modified MSRSGC...
