Introduction: Rhinomaxillary Mucormycosis (RMM) is a condition peculiarly seen as post-COVID-19 opportunistic infections with Maxillary Sinus Disease and Osteomyelitis (MSDO). The open method of debridement and closed method are two types of surgical modalities available. There is no scoring method for this infection in maxilla. This paper aims to study the clinical and CT-based outcome of open versus closed surgery of MSDO in post-COVID-19 RMM and propose a new scoring method to evaluate the disease severity, progression as well as recovery...

An elderly female presented to the emergency department with a right-sided facial droop and headache for two weeks. Investigations revealed poorly controlled diabetes, and the patient was found to be in diabetic ketoacidosis. Maxillofacial computed tomography (CT) demonstrated right postseptal cellulitis with concern for acute invasive fungal sinusitis. The patient was taken to the operating room for orbital surgical exploration and antrostomy. Surgical pathology revealed broad hyphae consistent with Rhizomucor species, and the patient was diagnosed with mucormycosis...

Mucormycosis is an invasive fungal infection that usually affects patients with immunocompromised conditions. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic and the following corticosteroid therapy, mucormycosis prevalence has increased. The situation may be more complicated with some underlying diseases such as diabetes mellitus. In addition, due to the vicinity of maxillary bone to the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, which are the main routes for the infection to spread, dentists, maxillofacial radiologists, and surgeons may be the first to encounter these patients...

Mucormycosis is a modern-day lifestyle disease that has burst into the health-care scenario. It is an opportunistic fungal infection that proliferates into the immunocompromised host by invasion of the fungus into the paranasal sinuses, thereby invading the palate, maxilla, and orbit. Left untreated it invades the cranial components such as cavernous sinus, skull base, and brain. Mucormycosis invades blood vessels, making these infections highly angioinvasive. We reviewed 45 cases of mucormycois of the head-and-neck region from 2010 to 2020 on the basis of electronic search peer-reviewed journals in Medline (PubMed) database...

Introduction: Recent advances in endoscopic paraphernalia have brought the once intricate anterior lateral wall of maxilla, within reach of the endoscopic surgeon. Endoscopic modified Denker's approach provides another route to reach the indiscernible sites of maxillary & other paranasal sinuses along with PPF (pterygo-palatine fossa)/ITF (infra-temporal fossa) region. This approach has been widely used Pan-India during the Post-Covid Mucormycosis Epidemic, in our country. As this approach mandates sacrifice of nasolacrimal duct, the suspicion in some quarters about post-op fibrosis and eventually obstruction of lacrimal drainage is genuine...
