INTRODUCTION: Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) are prognostic factors in several tumours, though little is known in medullary thyroid cancer (MTC). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between preoperative NLR, PLR and SII with MTC clinicopathological and molecular features, and their predictive value for lymph node and distant metastasis. METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 75 patients with MTC who underwent surgery at our institution...

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Although sensorineural hearing loss may have different aetiologies, we focused on autoimmune hearing loss since it may be reversible with corticosteroid therapy; this entity is sometimes associated with systemic autoimmune diseases. Hashimoto's thyroiditis or chronic autoimmune thyroiditis shows antibodies and may be harmful to hearing thresholds regardless of hypothyroidism effect. To date this effect has not been sufficiently studied and never with extended high frequencies...

Carotid body tumors (CBTs) are a neoplasm that affects the carotid glomus. This study aims to improve the management of CBTs in Ecuador. This single-center, retrospective observational study was conducted at the Instituto de la Tiroides y Enfermedades de Cabeza y Cuello (ITECC). We included adults with CBTs, between January 2019 and August 2022. A total of 15 patients with CBTs were included. All patients were females living at high altitudes (>2500 m). In the Shamblin classification, 12 tumors were type II, and 3 were type III...

Differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) is the most frequent endocrine neoplasm, with an increase in recent decades. Papillary carcinoma is the most frequent histological subtype and a large number of cases are related to tumors of small size and with little clinical repercussion, detected incidentally or as a consequence of the availability of diagnostic techniques. The "good prognosis" of the majority of cases has maintained for years the controversy in the approach to these patients, especially in two basic aspects of the therapeutic protocol: surgery and the administration of radioiodine...

BACKGROUND: Hypocalcemia is a common complication of total thyroidectomy; transient hypocalcemia has been reported in up to 68% of the patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Chart review of all patients undergoing total thyroidectomy from 2016 to 2020. Clinical, biochemical, and pathological information was registered. We sought correlations between the different variables and the occurrence of post-operative hypocalcemia. This is a retrospective study carried out at a tertiary care teaching hospital...

BACKGROUND: Nodularity in thyroid tissue is extremely common. In Mexico, the only openly available treatment for benign cold thyroid nodules that cause compressive or cosmetic symptoms is surgery. This limitation in the availability of non-invasive treatments places an enormous strain on the State's health resources. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the cost-minimization of percutaneous ethanol injection treatment (PEIT) against radiofrequency ablation (RFA) and laser ablation for the treatment of benign solid thyroid nodules...

INTRODUCTION: Thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) trend may be considered a surrogate marker for thyroglobulin in differentiated thyroid carcinoma. The aim of this study is to analyse, in cases with positive TgAb, trend over time and its relationship with response to treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective and descriptive study of 100 patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma and positive TgAb (measured by electrochemoluminiscense) after thyroidectomy. Assessment of response to initial treatment was performed 6-24 months after surgery...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Despite the value of ultrasonography in the detection of chronic thyroiditis (CT) as well as in nodular goitre, it is often only indicated in patients with hypothyroidism if a palpable goitre or a thyroid mass is identified. The objective of the study is to evaluate the clinical usefulness of thyroid ultrasonography in patients with primary hypothyroidism without clinical suspicion of nodular goitre. And more specifically, to analyse its value in the aetiological diagnosis of hypothyroidism, and to evaluate its contribution in the detection and characterisation of coexisting subclinical thyroid nodular disease...

METHODS: Patients with Hashimoto thyroiditis referred to the outpatient endocrinology clinic were included in the study. The demographic data, thyroid function test results, and autoantibody titers were recorded. The headache's clinical characteristics were also determined. OBJECTIVE: Papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has many variants and most of them are mild tumors. Oncocytic variant (OV) is a rare subtype of PTC. There are controversial results about its prognosis in the literature. We investigated its aggressivity and clinical course by comparing it with classical variant (CV) and tall cell variant (TV) of PTC over a stage-matched design. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Pure 100 OV, 71TV and 1219 CV were included in this retrospective cohort study...

Uterine metastases from extra pelvic tumors are rare; involvement of the uterus is usually by direct neoplastic extension from adjacent organs. We report the case of a 68-year-old woman with a history of total thyroidectomy. She presented with urinary incontinence associated with episodes of metrorrhagia. Ultrasound showed a thickened endometrium. A legrado was performed and the biopsy revealed a proliferation of neoplastic cells with oval nuclei, «salt and pepper» chromatin, evident nucleoli and a moderate amount of eosinophilic cytoplasm...

Amyloid goitre is an infrequent benign entity characterized by a rapid increase in the size of the thyroid gland due to amyloid deposit in the parenchyma. Such an increase in size, which takes place over only a few months, can cause symptoms such as dyspnea, dysphagia and dysphonia. We present three cases diagnosed in the same centre and estimated its incidence. All cases showed similar morphology, with varying proportions of thyroid follicles, mature adipose tissue and amyloid. AA Amyloid accumulation was verified and associated to previous pathologies (Crohn's disease, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and chronic renal disease)...

Precision medicine is a reality in some diseases; it supports the development of accurate and specific diagnostic methods, new drugs and molecules. Our research team in Mexico, made up of clinical and biomedical researchers, has been performing free RET gene mutational diagnosis for medullary thyroid cancer and multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) 2 and 3 for 20 years. RET pathogenic variants in the Mexican population are consistent with reported data: most common mutations are 634/NEM2 and 918/NEM3. Currently, new nanobiotechnology methods are being developed for this type of determination in order to obtain faster, simpler, more sensitive and specific results applicable in all types of laboratories...

BACKGROUND: Chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis or Hashimoto's thyroiditis is the most frequent cause of acquired hypothyroidism in children. An association between low levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OH vitamin D) and the development of the disease have been detected. Context: Papillary thyroid carcinoma(PTC)s are the indolent progressive tumours. Survivin is a unique bifunctional protein with cell cycle regulation and apoptosis inhibition. The expression of this protein has been shown to be increased in thyroid tumours correlated with aggressive behavior from well differentiated to anaplastic. Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between immunohistochemically survivin expression and tumour-associated prognostic factors in papillary thyroid carcinomas...
