INTRODUCTION: There are some inherent problems with the use of observation methods in the ergonomic assessment of working posture, namely the stability and precision of the measurements. This study aims to use a machine learning (ML) approach to avoid the subjectivity bias of observational methods in ergonomic assessments and further identify risk patterns for work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among sewing machine operators. METHODS: We proposed a decision tree analysis scheme for ergonomic assessment in working postures (DTAS-EAWP)...

Frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD) causes frontotemporal dementia (FTD), the most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease, and is often also associated with motor disorders1 . The pathological hallmarks of FTLD are neuronal inclusions of specific, abnormally assembled proteins2 . In the majority of cases the inclusions contain amyloid filament assemblies of TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43) or tau, with distinct filament structures characterizing different FTLD subtypes3,4 . The presence of amyloid filaments and their identities and structures in the remaining approximately 10% of FTLD cases are unknown but are widely believed to be composed of the protein fused in sarcoma (FUS, also known as translocated in liposarcoma)...

We used electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) to determine the structures of Aβ40 filaments from the leptomeninges of individuals with Alzheimer's disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy. In agreement with previously reported structures, which were solved to a resolution of 4.4 Å, we found three types of filaments. However, our new structures, solved to a resolution of 2.4 Å, revealed differences in the sequence assignment that redefine the fold of Aβ40 peptides and their interactions...

This study investigates how family continuation, namely family tradition and succession intention, alter the socially responsible behavior of small and medium sized (SME) family firms. Using a unique dataset, we have conducted multiple regressions on survey data from German family SMEs and show a statistically and economically significant increase in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) alongside the planning of family succession. However, when analyzing the different facets of CSR, we have found strong variances: While succession intention goes along with an increased community, market, and supply chain engagement this is not the case for CSR directed towards employees, or the environment...

This study introduces ETLBOCBL-CNN, an automated approach for optimizing convolutional neural network (CNN) architectures to address classification tasks of varying complexities. ETLBOCBL-CNN employs an effective encoding scheme to optimize network and learning hyperparameters, enabling the discovery of innovative CNN structures. To enhance the search process, it incorporates a competency-based learning concept inspired by mixed-ability classrooms during the teacher phase. This categorizes learners into competency-based groups, guiding each learner's search process by utilizing the knowledge of the predominant peers, the teacher solution, and the population mean...

The onset of the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected the mental health and well-being of women in vulnerable settings. Currently, there is limited evidence that explores the wellness of elderly women under the associated restrictions. This study explores the lived experiences of elderly women in a vulnerable community in Durban, South Africa. A face-to-face, in-depth qualitative approach was implemented to interview 12 women aged 50 years and over. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data...

This article presents a straightforward hybrid arch technique for treating residual type B aortic dissecting aneurysms following type A repair (replacement of the ascending aorta) that employs a frozen elephant trunk (FET) straight vascular prosthesis. The debranch-first method involves only cutting and sewing the previous ascending graft, inserting the FET from zone 0, and debranching the arch vessels using a trifurcated graft. This technique is less invasive as it eliminates the need to manipulate the dissected distal arch aneurysm...

Foreign bodies in the urethra can occur by self-insertion, and patients often hide the symptoms due to embarrassment. Foreign bodies act as a focus for infection and abscess formation and result in perforation or fistula when not detected on time. Foreign bodies can display symptoms such as frequent urination, dysuria, hematuria, urethrorrhagia, and obstruction. This case discusses a self-inserted urethral sewing needle that was removed cystoscopically from an adolescent.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Acute exogenous lipoid pneumonia (AELP) is a rare disorder caused by intake of lipid formulations and is often underdiagnosed. Meanwhile, the mechanism of AELP is still underlying. MCC950, was previously found to significantly suppress the release of inflammatory cytokines IL-18 and IL-1β. However, the effect of MCC950 on AELP induced by sewing machine oil has not been reported. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The NLRP3, NF-[Formula: see text]B p65, caspase-1 and IL-1β expression in lung tissues were compared between a rat model of AELP and control rats using western blotting and real-time quantitative assay...

This study aims to estimate the impact of sewing thread patterns on changes in the resistance of conductive yarns coated with silver paste. Firstly, the structure of the conductive yarns was examined, and various variations in the length and angle of individual sewing stitches were observed and analyzed through experiments. The results revealed that as the length of an individual stitch decreased, the width of the conductive yarn increased. Additionally, variations in the stitch angle resulted in different resistance values in the conductive yarn...

Optimum protein function and biochemical activity critically depends on water availability because solvent thermodynamics drive protein folding and macromolecular interactions1 . Reciprocally, macromolecules restrict the movement of 'structured' water molecules within their hydration layers, reducing the available 'free' bulk solvent and therefore the total thermodynamic potential energy of water, or water potential. Here, within concentrated macromolecular solutions such as the cytosol, we found that modest changes in temperature greatly affect the water potential, and are counteracted by opposing changes in osmotic strength...

BACKGROUND: With the improvement in postoperative complications and long-term survival post LVAD, continuing to improve clinical outcomes will require efforts to decrease long-term complications. The purpose of this study is to describe the incidence of mechanical pump failure requiring surgery, which we define as pump failure secondary to either outflow graft compression, outflow graft obstruction, or pump thrombosis requiring surgical intervention. METHODS: 141 consecutive adult patients who underwent HeartMate3 Implantation using the "cut-then-sew" implantation technique between September 2015 and September 2021 were included in our study...
