BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Stroke is one of the leading causes of mortality, and women are impacted more from stroke than men in terms of their absolute number and in having worse outcomes. A growing number of studies have explored the association between pregnancy complications, pregnancy outcomes, and stroke. Limited studies, however, have investigated links involving infertility, miscarriage, and stillbirth, which could plausibly be associated via a background of endocrine conditions, endothelial dysfunction, and chronic systematic inflammation...

Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is infrequent at pediatric age (3 %) and is characterized by venous or arterial thrombosis and/or spontaneous abortions. APS occurs either as a primary condition or in the setting of an underlying disease. This is a case of a 12-year-old girl with a right hemiparesis and acute disturbance in gait, in which an ischemic cerebrovascular accident (CVA) due to middle cerebral artery thrombosis associated with positive antiphospholipid antibodies is confirmed (anticardiolipin antibody, lupus anticoagulant and anti-β2-glycoprotein antibody), fulfilling the criteria for the diagnosis of antiphospholipid syndrome...

Migraine is the second cause of disability and of lost years of healthy life worldwide. Migraine is characterized by recurrent headache attacks and accompanying disabling symptoms lasting 4-48 h. In episodic migraine, attacks occur in less than 15 days per month and in chronic migraine, in more than 15 monthly days. Whilst successful translation of pharmacological discoveries into efficacious therapeutics has been achieved in the preventative therapy of chronic migraine, treatment of acute migraine suffers the lack of effective advancements...

BACKGROUND: Transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR) is new a hybrid approach to carotid artery revascularization. Proctored training on live cases is an effort-, time-, and resource-intensive approach to learning new procedures. We analyzed the worldwide experience with TCAR to develop objective performance metrics for the procedure, and compared the effectiveness of training physicians on cadavers or synthetic models to traditional in-person training on live cases. METHODS: Physicians underwent one of three mandatory training programs: 1) in-person proctoring on live TCAR procedures, 2) supervised training on human cadavers, 3) supervised training on synthetic models...

BACKGROUND Brugada syndrome is a rare inherited channelopathy that can lead to sudden cardiac death. The discovery of new variants of variable penetrance along with the current guidance for cascade family screening can be expected to lead to an increase in identified asymptomatic carriers of potentially causative mutations of channelopathies. A single coronary artery is a rare congenital anomaly of the coronary anatomy. We present a rare case of a 59-year-old woman with a family history of Brugada syndrome with the c...

Importance: Left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO) has emerged as an alternative to anticoagulation for select patients with atrial fibrillation; however, women have been underrepresented in clinical trials of LAAO, and sex-specific subanalyses are limited. Objective: To evaluate the sex differences in the baseline characteristics of patients undergoing LAAO implant and in the in-hospital outcomes after LAAO implant. Design, Setting, and Participants: A total of 49 357 patients in the National Cardiovascular Data Registry LAAO Registry undergoing LAAO with the Watchman device between January 1, 2016, and June 30, 2019, were included in this study...

Introduction: Previous studies have shown that adverse childhood experiences negatively impact child development, with consequences throughout the lifespan. Some of these consequences include the exacerbation or onset of several pathologies and risk behaviors. Materials and Methods: A convenience sample of 398 individuals aged 20 years or older from the Porto metropolitan area, with quotas, was collected. The evaluation was conducted using an anonymous questionnaire that included sociodemographic questions about exposure to adverse childhood experiences, a list of current health conditions, questions about risk behaviors, the AUDIT-C test, the Fagerström test and the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-brief form...

People with chronic stroke (PwCS) demonstrate similar gait-slip fall-risk on both paretic and non-paretic side. Compensatory stepping and slipping limb control are crucial to reduce gait-slip fall-risk. Given the unpredictable intensities of real-life perturbations, this study aimed to determine whether recovery from paretic or non-paretic slips vary as a function of perturbation intensity among PwCS. Forty-four PwCS were assigned to non-paretic low intensity slip, non-paretic high intensity slip, paretic low intensity slip, or paretic high intensity slip group...

INTRODUCTION: Antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is an autoimmune disorder manifested by thromboembolic events, recurrent spontaneous abortions and elevated titers of circulating antiphospholipid antibodies. In addition, the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies seems to confer a fivefold higher risk for stroke or transient ischemic attack. Although the major antigen of APS is β2 glycoprotein I, it is now well established that antiphospholipid antibodies are heterogeneous and bind to various targets...

Individuals with established cardiovascular disease or a high burden of cardiovascular risk factors may be particularly vulnerable to develop complications from coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN) gene encodes a tumor suppressor protein which is altered in several malignancies. This protein is a negative regulator of the PI3K/AKT signaling. Several transcription factors regulate the expression of PTEN in positive or negative directions. Moreover, numerous microRNAs (miRNAs) have functional interactions with PTEN and inhibit its expression. Suppression of PTEN can attenuate the response of cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents. Based on the critical role of this tumor suppressor gene, the identification of negative regulators of its expression has practical significance particularly in the prevention and management of cancer...

Migraine headache is a common condition with an estimated lifetime prevalence of greater than 20%. While it is a well-established risk factor for cardiovascular disease and ischemic stroke, its association with subarachnoid hemorrhage is largely unexplored. We sought to compare the incidence of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage in a cohort of migraine patients with a cohort of patients with tension headache. A cohort comparison study utilizing the MarketScan insurance claims database compared patients diagnosed with migraine who were undergoing treatment with abortive or prophylactic pharmacotherapy (treatment cohort) and patients diagnosed with tension headache who had never been diagnosed with a migraine and who were naïve to migraine pharmacotherapy (control cohort)...

We report an extremely rare case of a 27-year-old woman presenting with ischemic stroke as an initial manifestation of moyamoya disease in the first trimester of pregnancy. We conducted an artificial abortion when her neurological symptoms rapidly became refractory to optimal antithrombotic treatments. The progression of neurologic deficits stopped immediately after abortion, resulting in recovery to independence, with slight motor aphasia and right hemiparesis due to improved cerebral flow. We highlight rapid artificial abortion combined with antithrombotic treatment for patients of moyamoya disease with pregnancy-associated ischemic stroke as an appropriate treatment to correct hemodynamic instability and suppress the progression of neurological symptoms...

Over the past 2 decades, more women in the United States are engaging in excessive alcohol use, including women of reproductive age. Consuming alcohol in amounts greater than recommended limits is associated with an increased risk for adverse health effects, such as breast cancer, hypertension stroke, spontaneous abortion, and infertility. Any amount of alcohol use during pregnancy can result in a fetal alcohol spectrum disorder. No safe time, safe amount, or safe type of alcohol to consume during pregnancy has been identified...
