INTRODUCTION: Circadian syndrome (CircS) is proposed as a novel risk cluster based on reduced sleep duration, abdominal obesity, depression, hypertension, dyslipidemia and hyperglycemia. However, the association between CircS and chronic kidney disease (CKD) remains unclear. To investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal association between CircS and CKD, this study was performed. METHODS: A national prospective cohort (China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, CHARLS) was used in this study...

CONTEXT: Hypothyroidism and pericardial effusion are two conditions that are associated with previous research. Nevertheless, the correlation between the severity of hypothyroidism and the occurrence of pericardial effusion remains uncertain. AIMS: 1. To explore and examine the association between the severity of hypothyroidism and the occurrence of pericardial effusion. 2. To compare clinical characteristics and demographic factors with varying degrees of hypothyroidism severity and pericardial effusion...

Recent studies have explored the influence of obesity and critical illness on ciprofloxacin pharmacokinetics. However, variation across the subpopulation of individuals with obesity admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) with varying renal function remains unexamined. This study aims to characterize ciprofloxacin pharmacokinetics in ICU patients with obesity and provide dose recommendations for this special population. Individual patient data of 34 ICU patients with obesity (BMI >30 kg/m2 ) from four studies evaluating ciprofloxacin pharmacokinetics in ICU patients were pooled and combined with data from a study involving 10 individuals with obesity undergoing bariatric surgery...

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the top cause of death among childbearing women globally and public health issue for underdeveloped nations. It is the world's second most prevalent cancer among women. In 2018, 311,000 women died due to cervical cancer.Approximately 80 % of these deaths occurred in developing countries. However, there has been insufficient research on cervical cancer screening utilisation among Ethiopian nurses, despite the fact that nurses promote women's health and play a key role in cervical cancer education...

Plants contain many bioactive compounds with potent antibacterial and efflux pump inhibitory activity (EPI). In this study, gallic acid extracted from pomegranate molasses by analytical HPLC holds promise as an EPI drug for Staphylococcus aureus mediated tetracycline resistance, it lowered the bacterial resistance and reversed the mechanism via tet family efflux pump, using molecular technique and in-silico molecular docking analysis. Extracted gallic acid combined with tetracycline demonstrated a significant decrease in the minimal inhibitory concentration MIC compared to its single activity...

Epigenetics in the form of DNA methylation and other processes is an established property of genotypes and a focus of empirical research. Yet, there remain fundamental gaps in the evolutionary theory of epigenetics. To support a comprehensive understanding of epigenetics, this paper investigates theoretically the combined effects of deleterious mutation and epimutation with and without inbreeding. Both spontaneous epimutation and paramutation are considered to cover a broader range of epigenetic phenomena. We find that inbreeding generally reduces the amount of segregating deleterious genetic and epigenetic variation at equilibrium, although interestingly inbreeding can also increase the amount of deleterious genetic or epigenetic variation...

Nutritional therapy (NT) based on a controlled protein intake represents a cornerstone in managing chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, if a CKD patient is at the same time affected by cancer, oncologists and nutritionists tend to suggest a dietary regimen based on high protein intake to avoid catabolism and malnutrition. International guidelines are not clear when we consider onco-nephrological patients and, as a consequence, no clinical shared strategy is currently applied in clinical practice. In particular, no precise nutritional management is established in nephrectomized patients for renal cell carcinoma (RCC), a specific oncological cohort of patients whose sudden kidney removal forces the remnant one to start a compensatory mechanism of adaptive hyperfiltration...

A weakened immune system and more inflammatory cytokines being released are possible effects of the surgical stress that a cesarean section induces. This kind of reaction, in addition to the altered reaction to catecholamines, has the potential to significantly affect the immune system of the mother and the patients' general postoperative course. This prospective study compared the plasma levels of catecholamines and cytokines in healthy pregnant patients having cesarean sections under spinal anesthesia versus general anesthesia...

Background: Cholesteatoma is a lesion capable of destroying surrounding tissues, which may result in significant complications. Surgical resection is the only effective treatment; however, the presence of cholesteatoma recidivism is common. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the Attic Exposure-Antrum Exclusion (AE-AE) surgical technique in treating cholesteatomas and identifying factors associated with recidivism. Additionally, the study aimed to assess the utility of non-echo-planar diffusion MRI (non-EPI-DWI MRI) in detecting cholesteatoma recidivism in patients undergoing AE-AE surgery...

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted images (DWI) obtained by echo-planar imaging (EPI) are frequently degraded by susceptibility artifacts. It has been suggested that DWI obtained by fast advanced spin-echo (FASE) or reconstructed with deep learning reconstruction (DLR) could be useful for image quality improvements. The purpose of this investigation using in vitro and in vivo studies was to determine the influence of sequence difference and of DLR for DWI on image quality, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) evaluation, and differentiation of malignant from benign head and neck tumors...

INTRODUCTION: Informed consent is an ethical and legal component of healthcare. It ensures patient autonomy and allows patients to make decisions regarding their treatment. In dental care, informed consent is particularly important because most dental procedures are invasive. Since dental students are future dentists, they need to learn about their ethical obligations and accountability through the informed consent process as this is critical to patients' well-being. This study aimed to determine dental students' knowledge, attitudes, and practices of the informed consent process for oral health care in Makerere University Dental Hospital, Uganda...

Epirubicin (EPI) alone can trigger mildly protective autophagy in residual tumor cells, resulting in an immunosuppressive microenvironment. This accelerates the recurrence of residual tumors and leads to antiprogrammed death ligand 1 (anti-PD-1)/PD-L1 therapy resistance, posing a significant clinical challenge in tumor immunotherapy. The combination of checkpoint inhibitors targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway and amplifying autophagy presents an innovative approach to tumor treatment, which can prevent tumor immune escape and enhance therapeutic recognition...
