INTRODUCTION: Literature on New-Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE) is scarce and management is guided mainly by retrospective reports, short case series or expert opinions. We aimed to add to the pool of the available data by retrospectively reviewing seven cases of NORSE cases admitted to our hospital over the last five years between January 2014 and March 2019. METHODS: Fully anonymised data from medical charts, EEG reports, imaging reports, laboratory test results, types of antiepileptic medications, intravenous anaesthetic therapy, and immune therapies received was collected, along with response to treatment, length of hospital stay and outcome at discharge...

INTRODUCTION: New-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) is defined as refractory SE in patients without active epilepsy or relevant neurological disorder with no clear active causes. Diverse types and etiologies of NORSE are reported in various groups. Limbic encephalitis (LE) is reported as one of etiologies of NORSE. In this study, we investigated whether there were any intersections between NORSE and limbic encephalitis, as well as the presence of prognostic factors in intersection patients...

BACKGROUND: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea (AAD) is a risk factor for exacerbating the outcome of critically ill patients. Dysbiosis induced by the exposure to antibiotics reveals the potential therapeutic role of fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) in these patients. Herein, we aimed to evaluate the safety and potential benefit of rescue FMT for AAD in critically ill patients. METHODS: A series of critically ill patients with AAD received rescue FMT from Chinese fmtBank, from September 2015 to February 2019...

BACKGROUND: The recent listeriosis outbreak in South Africa (SA) received widespread attention in the media. More than 1 000 laboratory-confirmed cases of listeriosis occurred during an 18-month period, with a case fatality rate of 28%. Acute bacterial meningitis due to listeriosis was extremely rare at Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria until 2017/18, when we saw two very sick adults with this condition during the listeriosis outbreak. OBJECTIVES: To describe the presentation, treatment and outcome of these patients to raise awareness of this potentially fatal but treatable infection that does not respond to empirical third-generation cephalosporins...

New-onset refractory status epilepticus (NORSE) is a rare but challenging condition occurring in a previously healthy patient, often with no identifiable cause. We describe the electro-clinical features and outcomes in a group of patients with NORSE who all demonstrated a typical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sign characterized by bilateral lesions of the claustrum. The group includes 31 patients (12 personal and 19 previously published cases; 17 females; mean age of 25 years). Fever preceded status epilepticus (SE) in 28 patients, by a mean of 6 days...

114 Background: Febrile neutropenia (FN) is a common complication in oncology patients and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality if untreated. Because of this, it is regarded as a medical emergency. FN treatment guidelines universally recommend the prompt initiation ( < 60 minutes) of intravenous antibiotic therapy. We hypothesized that a quality initiative project creating a new FN clinical practice guideline (CPG) would reduce the time to antibiotic administration (TTA) for inpatient oncology patients with FN...

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne arthropod-borne viral (arboviral) tropical disease in humans affecting 50-528 million people worldwide. The acute abdominal complications of dengue fever are acute appendicitis, acute pancreatitis, acute acalculous cholecystitis and non-specific peritonitis. Acute pancreatitis with new onset diabetes in dengue shock syndrome (DSS) is very rarely reported. We describe a case of 30-year-old man admitted in intensive care unit and was diagnosed with DSS with RT-PCR, NS1 antigen and dengue IgM antibody being positive...

Spoted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses are actually considered as emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases, caused by pathogenic bacteria of the spotted fever group rickettsiae (SFGR). Recently, serologic studies in human and animals conducted in Colombian Orinoquia, showed a high seroprevalence against SFGR. In June 2015, a 50-year-old male was admitted to a hospital in Bogotá, Colombia, with two days of malaise and temperature of 39°C, associated to generalized rash 24h after the onset of fever. A 69-year-old white man was admitted because of a clinical history of persistent cough and fever. Chest x-rays showed bilateral lung infiltrates with air bronchograms, whereas the urine antigen test resulted positive for Legionella pneumophila. The next day, he was transferred to the intensive care unit and intubated because of severe renal and respiratory distress. Neurological examination revealed distal weakness and loss of deep tendon reflexes in lower extremities. Nerve conduction studies displayed severe demyelinating sensorimotor polyneuropathy, and plasmapheresis was therefore applied with mild improvement...
